The Australian Comforts Fund was formed during the first World War and was an amalgamation of various organisations which were sending items of comfort such as toiletries, clothing and food to Australian troops who were fighting overseas. It ceased its work and was dissolved in 1920 at the ceasation of the war but was started again to continue the same work in 1939.In Australia it rivalled the work of the red Cross and many of the volunteers involved were women. As well as making and providing items themselves there was major fundraising to purchase further items. Over the course of the war they provided over 1.5 million hampers. This certificate was presented to Mrs Steward for valuable services rendered to the Australian Comforts Fund during World War 1939-1945. The Australian Comforts fund was wound up in June 1946.This certificate recognises the work of one of our residents to a fund which was Australia wide and would have been one of numerous certificates presented around the country. The Australian Comforts fund was an organisation with which numerous people would have been affiliated and which also assisted many soldiers over the years. Early in World War I local women's groups in Australia began working to provide provide tobacco, cakes, puddings, condensed milk, sugar, biscuits, newspapers and other 'luxury' items to supplement the Australian soldier's army rations. These fund-raising bodies were amalgamated in 1916 to form a national body, The Australian Comforts Fund (ACF), which undertook to provide 'comforts' to all Australians abroad. Sales of this book raised funds for The Australian Comforts Fund.A thin book with a brown fabric cover. On the cover is a black line drawing of a koala in a tree. It contains a summary of the work done by the Australian Comforts Funds at the front, Anzac and Mudros, at the camps in Egypt with a summary of gifts and statement of accounts.The book sold for 3/- or 15 P.T. in aid of the A.C.F. It was edited by William Beit.

This clock was placed in what was called the "Writing Room" of the Soldiers Memorial Institute when it was opened in 1921. After the renovations to the SMI in 2016 - 18 the clock was placed back in the same position in what is now called "The Building and RSL History Room".Pendulum Wall Clock, timber frame with glass front insets in door, clock face has Roman Numerals, chimes on the hour and half hour, wind up key inside. A loose pack of 53 sheets of printed writing paper distributed to service personnel for the purpose of writing to their family and friends. This stationery is printed in red ink with a ruled writing area above which is a letterhead. The letterhead features the names of the charitable organisations involved in producing and distributing the stationery. The reverse side of the paper has ruled lines printed vertically in blue ink. The paper is approximately 8 x 5 inches in size and is a buff colour.The paper has printed letterhead with the "AUSTRALIAN COMFORTS FUND", "VICTORIAN DIVISION", the ACF insignia and the note "With Which is Affiliated". The affiliated organisation names are also printed, being "R.S.L War Service Fund", "Y.M.C.A.", "The Salvation Army" and the "Y.W.C.A."

The tin contains newspaper cuttings from The Bendigo Advertiser on community activities in Bendigo between 1919 and 1952. This badge was produced by the Returned Services league War Comforts Fund in World War Two to provide comforts for the soldiers serving abroad. The appeal was held annually throughout the war. Badges were sold for one shilling, two shillings and one pound with special badges produced for children at a cost of sixpence each.This badge is of interest as a memento of the badges sold in World War Two to provide comforts for soldiers, Gold painted metal dome with rim resembling a hat with text on the dome and the rim. The “Ugly man Contest” was a fund raiser for the P.O.W comfort fund in which £3891 was raised. (Pounds). The certificate was given to William (Bill) John Turner Bendigo RSL Sub Branch. Refer Cat No 8029 re this effort and others by Bill Turner. Refer Cat No 8030 for his RSL history and his WW1 service details.Framed certificate, frame is timber gold colour, backing piec is maroon colour, certificate is a fawn colour, all text in black.
