This photograph depicts the steel tramway (or tram plate) along Centre Dandenong Road, Cheltenham near the Moorabbin Airport entrance in the 1970's. These tramways played an important role in transportation along Moorabbin's major roads. Heavily laden carts could travel smoothly and safely along the steel plates when the road surfaces were often rutted and hazardous. This surviving section was later moved for road improvements. The area now known as the City of Kingston was a market garden region and the round trip to market could take as long as eight hours on poorly maintained roads. The installation of the steel tramway transformed the arduous journey faced by market gardeners in transporting their produce to market. As there was only a single tramway, the carts often travelled in convoy, enabling drivers to leave piloting to the first cart and having a rest. Book review from The Courier, titled "Tram ride to success", reviewing a book "The Promise of Gold and its results" written by David Griffiths. Looks at the life and work of John Garibaldi Roberts a supporter of the Arts and Chief Accountant of the Melbourne Tramway and Omnibus Co (MTOCo) and later the manager of the cable tram system for the MMTB. He retired in 1923. Has photos of the family, John at his work desk in 1910 and the directors of the MTOCo. Item written by Caleb Cluff of The Courier. One of Roberts guests was C J Dennis, who wrote Songs of the Sentimental bloke" while staying at Roberts place in the Dandenongs which had been formed from disused horse buses. Mt Calvin, the homestead of Jeanie and Willie Richardson can be clearly seen in the clearing above the men in the picture. The white roof of the Barber homestead is on the right of the picture. A landslide in 1934 destroyed the tree ferned area. John Lundy-Clarke grew up in the Kalorama/Mt Dandenong area and later in life (1972-74) began to write a comprehensive history of the area working from an original settlement map in an effort to cover all areas.Black and white photograph that is a copy of a Rose series postcard titled 'The Picturesque Road to Mt. He was a competent artist, and as an amateur anthropologist collected Aboriginal artefacts during travels in Central and Northern Australia. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection.
