Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and Village
Clothing - Nightgown, Vera and Aurelia Giles, 1880-1920
There are many 19th century items of furniture, linen and crockery donated to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village by Vera and Aurelin Giles. The items are associated with the Giles Family and are known as the “Giles Collection”. These items mostly came from the simple home of Vera’s parents-in-law, Henry Giles and his wife Mary Jane (nee Freckleton), whose photos are in the parlour. They married in 1880. Henry Giles was born at Tower Hill in 1858. He was a labourer on the construction of the Breakwater before leaving in 1895 to build bridges in N.S.W. for about seven years. Mary Jane was born in 1860 at Cooramook. She attended Mailor’s Flat State School where she was also a student teacher before, as family legend has it, she became a governess at “Injemiara” where her grandfather, Francis Freckleton, once owned land. Henry and Mary’s family of six, some of whom were born at Mailor’s Flat and later children at Wangoom, lived with their parents at Wangoom and Purnim west, where Henry died in 1933 and Mary Jane in 1940. The Giles family collection has social significance at a local level, because it illustrates the level of material support the Warrnambool community gave to Flagstaff Hill when the Museum was established.Nightgown, women's long white nightgown with long sleeves, round collar, pin tucked insert and lace trim.Giles Collection.flagstaff hill, warrnambool, shipwrecked-coast, flagstaff-hill, flagstaff-hill-maritime-museum, maritime-museum, shipwreck-coast, flagstaff-hill-maritime-village, nightie, giles collection, henry giles, tower hill, cooramook, warrnambool breakwater, mailor’s flat, wangoom, 19th century household goods, nightgown, nightdress, night dress, nightwear, sleepwear, clothing, fashion, 19th century, handmade clothing -

Artefact_ World war 1 candle kit, World war One candle kit, C1915
These little tins were available for soldiers to buy before embarking to the first world war. As the candles and matches are contained within the tin , it would have been a ideal way to keep both dry. The lid of the tin could also have been useful as a windshield. The tin was donated in memory of Les Lawlor. James Leslie Lawlor was born in Mepunga and lived in Warrnambool and enlisted in October 1916. He was discharged as medically unfit as he had broken his wrist three years previously and the break had failed to heal well. The tin was donated in his memory by his sister Vera Maguire This item with its link to World War 1 soldiers has historical significance to Australians in general but is also a link to a local family. It is a complete object still with the candles and matches. Small rectangular tin box with image of three soldiers and tents in the background. Brown and yellow check pattern on sides and bottom. Small round hole in bottom with metal rim inside the tin , in which a candle would be placed. There are two small candles and a rectangular section in which a box of matches in sitting. Hinged lid.On lid," Camp pocket Candlestick. A soldier's friend. On base " Patented 19/7-15 No 16856." On tape on the bottom of tin, " Would like this to go to the historical society in memory of Les Lawlor, Vera Maguire.warrnambool, james leslie lawlor, vera maguire, camp pocket candlestick, world war 1 -

Case, Vinyl Record, Hits of the War Years, 1985
Vera Lynn was a popular artist during the Second World War, known for her wholesome and romantic songs. This record was released on the 40th anniversary of the end of the Second World War and contains twenty songs that were popular during the period, especially with serving troops. Vera Lynn was supposedly fondly referred to as the "Forces' Sweetheart." The record contains the following songs: SIDE ONE 1. (There'll be Bluebirds over) The White Cliffs of Dover 2. Harbour Lights 3. As Time Goes By 4. Beautiful Isle of Somewhere 5. Auf Wiederseh'n Sweetheart 6. Faraway Places 7. Little Sir Echo 8. Mexican Rose 9. A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square 10. Jealousy SIDE TWO 1. It's a Lovely Day To-morrow 2. The Bells of St. Mary's 3. A Little Rain Must Fall 4. The Anniversary Waltz 5. Yours 6. When I Grow Too Old To Dream 7. It's A Sin to Tell A Lie 8. When The Lights Go On Again 9. Drifting And Dreaming 10. We'll Meet AgainThough not rare, as a mass produced product, this record is representative of the music that was well-known during the 1940s both on the home front and by serving troops. Its release as an anniversary edition speaks to the enduring memory of the period and for some community members who lived through the Second World War, has strong social significance and ability to recall memories of the wartime period. Glossy square-shaped card sleeve printed in colour with combination of text and black and white photographs arranged as though a newspaper page. From top left corner: green stripe, red album title, union jack, photograph of a young servicewoman, photograph of the Cliffs of Dover, photograph of St Mary's and various song titles in various serif fonts. Newspaper-style page set behind metal square fencing upon brick fence, simulating a newspaper being sold. Reverse features pastel-toned photograph of Vera Lynn, with smaller collage-style image of the newspaper-style text on front, below which are song titles for Side One and Side Two in a numbered list. vera lynn, music, wartime, second world war, world war ii, world war 2, musicians, anniversary -

This article deals with methods of disease and infection control in Warrnambool. This article is significant because it is a first- hand record and gives a local perspective to a world- wide event.Three pages of typed details about the Spanish flu in Warrnambool as recorded by volunteer Nurse Mrs Vera Giles (nee King).
