Geelong Cycling Veterans Club was formed in 1971 but GWCC still conducted veteran races within the club. These medals appear to be remnants of awards not collected. Medals have always been awarded in recognition of achievement in competitive events. Even after 20+ years of veteran racing, the club still conducted veteran races which seems to indicate a large number older members were affiliated with the club.6 x Medals - one in gold metal conglomerate, three in bronze metal conglomerate, two in silver metal conglomerate. The front of the medals depict an olive wreath around the circumference, and has a racing cyclist painted on an enamel disk in the centre. These photos were saved with a label saying "Veterans Health week '96" which is an awareness campaign from the Department of Veterans Affairs. From an article in The Answer in December 1996, the motto of the week was "Enjoying Life" and over 80 events were held in Victoria. these photos are from "the annual Veterans' Health Week Afternoon Tea Dance. It included a march down Swanston St to the Shrine. There are photos of Legatees outside Legacy House watching the veterans march past at 01578 and 01579. And no doubt he or someone else would have because it needed "starting" and it just did not seem right that almost every other nation was represented on ANZAC Day and there were no South Africans marching, particularly when South Africans fought alongside Australians in two World Wars and in Korea. It is important to note that SAMVOA has had predecessors who were South Africans who had marched in Melbourne and probably elsewhere prior to 1996, but they were an older group of WW1 and WW2 veterans who by 1996 were too old to even travel by vehicle and they had fallen away. Around 1998, I contacted and spoke to their leader Major (retd.)
