The Norman Oliver collection. Norman Oliver was three times Mayor of Bendigo - 1950-51, 1964-65, 1970-71. Four typed pages of notes for a vote of thanks speech. Stapled. Undated, however the vote of thanks is for the outgoing Mayor and Mayoress of Bendigo, Cr and Mrs Robert Poulston, and it appears that Oliver is to succeed him. This would date the speech to 1950. Bob (Herman) Hymans (a former member of the Royal Netherlands Navy) was born in Bloemendaal, Holland on 30th September 1922. During World War II he fought against the Japanese in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) and was imprisoned in Changi and on the Burma Railway. After gaining qualifications as a Ski Instructor, Bob arrived in Falls Creek in July 1950. Working as an Instructor and Supervisor at Bogong Lodge, Bob decided his future was in accommodation. He was successful in negotiating an indenture for land from the State Electricity Commission (SEC). It took Bob two years to build his Grand Coeur Chalet but, tragically, it was burned down in August 1961. Bob also built the first Chairlift in Australia. This was a single chairlift and the structure was built from wooden electricity poles. He was constantly full of new ideas and proposals for the village. Bob Hymans die on 7th July 2007. This Collection of documents and letters tells the story of Bob's endeavours to develop Falls Creek into the ski village it is today.This item is significant because it documents actions taken by the Falls Creek Tourist Area Management Committee in their role overseeing the Tourist Area.A voters' roll listing all those eligible to vote for the Commercial Licensees Representative to the Falls Creek Area Management Committee. 35 Voters are listed on the roll. Alan Bradley advised 22/12/11 - "The picture appears to be taken in 1930, which was the year of a local option referendum. There are several pics showing ESCo trams with "VOTE NO"on the ends. In my research someone noted a tram with "VOTE YES "on one end and "VOTE NO"on the other! A black car on the south side appears to be a late 1920s model. If the front tram is towing a horse tram trailer, it would be for the bicycle carrying service. Many employees on the morning shift rode to the depot to sign on, and signed off in the city so their bikes needed to be transported." Published by Rose Stereograph Co., Armadale Victoria. I am a Melbourne based ceramic artist creating sculpture, murals, community art projects, commissioned works and residencies. I am a passionate facilitator of creativity and have extensive experience working, teaching and running workshops with in communities, schools and with people of all ages and abilities. My involvement with so many varied and interesting projects constantly informs my work and leads me to develop in new and exciting directions. The Arts of Suff-Rage (exhibition statement) In 2008 I joined forces with fellow artist Fern Smith in creating The Art of Suff-Rage traveling art installation. The project sees us roving Victoria dressed as suffragist giving out the latest edition of our newspaper. The installation celebrates the Centenary of Women’s Suffrage in Victoria and I have created one hundred ceramic suffragist sculptures each around 30cm in height. Fern has painted ten commemorative banners to honor the legacy of women campaigning for equality. Gasworks Arts Park has auspice the project and we received funding from the Department of Planning and Community Development Grants Program-Centenary of Women’s Suffrage. Thank you to everyone who has helped to get the project up and running. Fern and I ventured to Portland recently with The Art of Suff-Rage traveling art installation for an exhibition of our work. The exhibition consists of the entire body of work that we produced last year for the centenary celebrations of Victorian Women Vote 1908 – 2008.
