Frank May gained employment with the SEC on 1st July 1950 and was initially placed at Mount Beauty as a clerk. In September 1950 he transferred to a similar position at the Rocky Valley Dam construction site. He worked from October to April at Rocky Valley but then moved to Bogong Village as the construction site was closed during the winter. In October 1951 he returned to Rocky Valley but in November 1951 government funding cutbacks forced the SEC to he and many others from the Kiewa Hydro-Electricity Scheme were transferred or retrenched. Frank was transferred to the SEC in Colac where he worked as a meter reader. This photo was taken prior to the building of the replica Police Station to serve as a lunch room. The origional timber weatherboard building had been relocated around the rear of the residence years earlier but had since been demolished due to termite infestation. In 1963 the Shire of Ballarat celebrated its Centenary. This book outlines the history and development of the Shire over the 100 years.Councilor Charles Edward (Ted) Brown was at the time Shire President.The District Roads Board was created on 7th October 1856 and on 24th November 1863 was proclaimed a Shire,thus making it the first Shire in Victoria. Work commenced at Rocky Valley Dam site in early 1947 and proceeded until May. Resumed work in October after the winter and a camp for the accommodation of workmen was commenced at this time. Work continued in 1948 with the establishment of work facilities, including the erection of two large excavators. At the dam site the river was diverted through a temporary pipeline. Work proceeded in the summer months with the placing of concrete in the foundations and earth and rock fill for the construction of the wall. Rocky Valley and associated spillway and outlet works were completed in March, 1959. [from a contemporary report:] The Shire of Eltham Historical Society's entry in the 1986 Eltham Community Festival Parade included Ben Hall's Cobb & Co. coach along with several vintage motor vehicles and the Society's new Community Banner. Members dressed in in an appropriate costume to ride in one of the vehicles or walk along with them. This was owned and used by J.G. Ralston of Orbost. John Gavin Ralston was born 26 July 1914 at Eden, N.S.W. and came to Orbost in the early 1920's, with his parents and siblings. They lived at the corner of Tennyson and Salisbury Streets. Jack was educated at Orbost Higher Elementary School before being apprenticed to William Ross at the Snowy River Mail as a lino-type operator. He married Jean Cameron. After WW11 when he served overseas in the islands) He resumed his trade at the Snowy River Mail until 1949 when began J.G.& J.M. Ralston, Seed & Produce Merchants. Jack Ralston was very involved in the Orbost sporting community, the Presbyterian Church and the Orbost Municipal Band. He also served in the Orbost sub-branch of the R.S.L. He died on April 15 1967. (ref. Margaret Smith O.D.H.S. Newsletter) Collecting match box holders / grips was a popular hobby. They were made to fit over a box of matches for protection. Some were especially produced for significant occasions. This item is an example of a very common personal item rarely used today.A painted metal matchbox cover with a thin wooden matchbox inside. It is cream coloured with a picture of a cricketer being bowled out. In the top right hand corner is "OWZAT". The matches are Bryant & May's Crown Safety Matches. it is a rectangular cardboard box with a sliding cardboard drawer. The box has a paper label with text reading, "BRYANT & MAY'S CROWN SAFETY MATCHES" and an image of a crown. The top and bottom side has a purple striking paper, to light match. Ticket block headed Ballarat Vintage Tramway. On the rear in green ink are details of the Ballarat Tramway Museum, web address and that the organisation is a volunteer operated. The 100 tickets have been stapled onto a heavy cardboard back with a heavy metal staple and a small cardboard retaining strip at the top of the ticket. Ticket Numbers 191001 to 192100. The tickets are in the style of the former State Electricity Commission of Victoria tramway tickets. The 1/- tickets are used for Adult passengers, to save printing new tickets each time the fares changed. Commenced used end Jan. 1991. The president's page discussed the type of activities and help legatees can provide and urges the junior legatee to come forward with any questions. There was an article on the Anzac observance for students. The Intermediate Legacy Ladies Club gave an update, including a reunion that had occurred at Stanhope. Article on girls classes including a visit by Miss Bunty Turner of 'My Fair Lady'. Operation Float was held. Boys classes are described fully.
