Commemorative calendar depicting Australian involvement in World War 1

The Victory Medal was authorised in 1919 to commemorate the victory of the Allied Forces over the Central Powers. Each of the Allied nations issued a ‘Victory Medal' to their own nationals with all of these having the figure of Victory on the obverse as a common feature. Australians were awarded the medal issued by Great Britain. A member mentioned in despatches (MID) for service during World War 1 wears a bronze spray of oak leaves on the Victory Medal ribbon. Only one emblem is worn no matter how many times a member may have been ‘mentioned'. When a ribbon alone is worn a slightly smaller insignia is worn as a ribbon emblem. Eligibility The Victory Medal was awarded to prescribed classes of persons who entered a theatre of war on duty between 5 August 1914 and 11 November 1918. The Medal The Victory Medal is bronze with a winged figure of Victory on the obverse. The reverse has the words ‘THE GREAT WAR FOR CIVILISATION', all surrounded by a laurel wreath. The Ribbon The Victory Medal ribbon has a ‘two rainbow' design, with the violet from each rainbow on the outside edges moving through to a central red stripe where both rainbows meet. This file contains three items: 1/A review of the ROSSTOWN RAIL TRAIL from LIVING IN GLEN EIRA, vol. 11, 2004, Issue 4, no. 25, date and author unknown. The review explains the purpose of the Rail Trail with a brief narrative of the history behind Rosstown Sugar Mill Railway line. Concluding with information on the location of the Trail and the expected time required to walk the entire track included in the review is a map of the Rail Trail, which marks significant sites along the trail with historic pictures. 2/A newspaper article from THE AGE, dated Tuesday 21/10/1980 and written by Iola Matthews, reporting on the circumstances that led to the publication of the book RETURN TO ROSSTOWN written by Des Jowett and Ian Weickhardt. The article begins with a brief biography of the authors before moving into details of the book’s content, providing a further biography of W. Murray Ross which includes information on his financial ventures – particularly the Rosstown Rail – his marriage and children. This file contains four items about the visit of HRH Prince of Wales Edward (later Edward VIII) to Australia in 1920 and specifically a visit to Caulfield on 31/05/1920. 1/A souvenir program ‘HRH Prince of Wales’ visit to Caulfield 31/05/1920: it appears to contain copies of the pages of a book, which it is noted was embossed by a patient at a Rest House in Caulfield, signaller Don Ende, a soldier of World War I. Included is a letter from the Caulfield Mayor W. A. Wharington and Town Clerk F. Jowett to Edward, as well as a typed reply from Edward to the mayor. Three copies of a pamphlet for the ceremony of the Third Ordnance Services Unit ‘Exercising the Right of the Freedom of Entry to the City of Caulfield’, held on 13/07/1986. The pamphlet includes a brief history of the Unit’s association with the City of Caulfield, a list of individuals holding posts within the unit, text of the scroll conferring the Freedom of Entry on the Unit, a program of the ceremony, a brief history of the Royal Australian Army Ordnance Corps, including the Unit’s use of 75 Kooyong Road as their premises, a brief history of the city of Caulfield and an explanation of the tradition of conferring Freedom of Entry to a city. This file contains three items concerning Sir John Monash. 1/A two-page letter distributed at a rare book week event on the 22/07/2014 to the Glen Eira Historical Society from Michael Headberry. The letter requests support for the John Monash Sculptural Commission by the Monash Pioneers, who are seeking to erect a bronze full figure portrait of Sir John Monash, Monash University’s namesake. Monash is connected to the city of Glen Eira, as Monash University has a campus in Caulfield and there are a number of streets named after him. The letter discusses the life of Monash and his many achievements. Details in another two pages are also given of the statue to be erected and there are two photos of a wax model of the proposed statue; plus a donation form. 2/An article by Dana McCauley dated 17/05/2015 entitled ‘Push to rename Ports’ about Caulfield lawyer and Liberal Kate Ashmor. The article discusses how she wants the electorate of Melbourne Ports to be named after Sir John Monash due to him being one of the most prominent Victorian Jews. There is a photo of Ashmor in fron of a statue of Monash. Newspaper not known. 3/An article from the Leader on the 30/06/2015 entitled ‘Exhibit’s unique view on Jews in WW1’. The author is unknown. The article discusses an exhibition at the Jewish Museum of Australia about the social history behind the Jewish support of the war effort.
