A tribute to Captain Kenneth Malcolm Mortimer by his nephew Dr Owen Campbell Mortimer. Kenneth was born on the 9th October 1895 at Leneva near Wodonga and went to Agricultural High School in Wangaratta in 1912 before entering the Royal Military College Duntroon in 1913. He was killed in action on 20th July 1916, three months before his 21st birthday, at the Battle of Fleurbaix, Fromelles in France. His remains were unknown for 102 years when DNA testing confirmed the identity of nine Australian soldiers found buried in a mass grave near Pheasant Wood. The graves of these nine soldiers will be rededicated on July 19 2018.Mortimer entered the Royal Military College, Duntroon on 10 March 1913 and was graduated early, along with the rest of his class, on 28 June 1915. Mortimer had been a member of the college's photography club and took numerous pictures of his fellow cadets. He was appointed as a Lieutenant with the 29th Battalion on 1 July 1915 and embarked with his unit for Egypt in November 1915. He was promoted to Captain in February 1916 and arrived in France four months later. Jock Clutterbuck is a sculptor and printmaker of national significance, known for his sophisticated abstract forms with underlying esoteric mysticism. Clutterbuck overlapped with Baldessin when he studied sculpture and printmaking at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, RMIT (1965-66). He taught at RMIT from (1969-73) before lecturing in sculpture at the Victorian College of the Arts (1974-2000). He is represented in many national and international public art collections and is a recipient of many National prizes and awards. George Baldessin (1939-1978) was a printmaker and sculptor who built his bluestone studio at St Andrews (Nillumbik) in 1971. The bluestone studio was hand built by George, his partner Tess and the three Hails brothers, Rob, Doug and Don. Made of recycled materials the studio today contains all of George’s equipment including the large press, which he modelled himself with the help of Neil Jeffrey (Enjay Presses). George won many prizes throughout his career and is represented in many of Australia's public art collections including his famous 'Pears' sculpture in front of the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra. In 1975 he represented Australia in the Sao Paulo Biennale, before living and working in Paris until his return to St Andrews in 1977. In 1978 George was killed in a car accident aged 39 years. In 2001 Tess returned to St Andrews to reclaim the run-down studio and reconstitute it as The Baldessin Press & Studio - a printmaking retreat. It operates in George’s memory, so that artists may continue to create, perpetuating the generous spirit of George.‘Frosty Night Cartouche’ is one of eight prints in the 'Baldessin & Friends commemorative folio. The folio was conceived by Tess Edwards as a fundraising initiative in celebration of the The Baldessin Press & Studio's fifteen year anniversary, and as a way to honour George Baldessin's memory. The Baldessin Press & Studio is a not-for-profit organisation created in memory of the late George Baldessin (1939-1978), whose original studio is now open to the public for creative use and as a practical legacy to living artists. The Studio is located in St Andrews, Nillumbik. The folio is a unique coming together of seven very different and acclaimed artists who are connected by their friendship to the missing eighth member, George Baldessin. Following a visit to the Press in 2015, Clutterbuck was reminded of a suite of paintings he had produced some thirty years earlier inspired by plein-air drawings of the night sky. This print attempts to capture something of the enchantment, mystery and drama of a frosty rural property where Clutterbuck spent many years. It is a frost dreaming; a subtle personal homage to Baldessin, embodying the reverence of a fellow artist towards an old friend. A document that was part of a folder about the running of the President's Fund that was created in 1932 "to help temporarily embarrassed Melbourne Legatees" towards the end of The Great Depression. The document summarises the history of a fund that allowed President's to make discretionary payments to worthy causes without need to have it approved. It was written by Legatee Kemsley, a long standing legatee. The second page of the letter was located and added later which shows he wrote it in 1985 (02728). The fund was credited to the late Legatee Walter Berry of the domestic and building supplies firm, Henry Berry and Co. from his late father's estate. This one page document seems incomplete as it doesn't fully explain the fund's creation. From other documents it is shown the Howard and Georgina Berry Trust made annual donations of up to £1,000 to Legacy for use in the Fund. See also item 01527 for another summary of the fund's history. The extensive fashion and design collection of the Kew Historical Society has been assembled over a number of decades. One subsection of this collection is shoes, designed and manufactured for Australian women by Australian and European designers. Many of the shoes, while often mass-produced, were generally constructed by skilled artisans using traditional shoe-making techniques. The shoes date from the 1890s to the 1980s. These shoes were owned, worn and donated to the collection by Annie McIntyre.The McIntyre Collection of clothing and clothing accessories forms one of the largest single donations to our Fashion & Design collection. It includes clothing and clothing accessories worn by four women in the Cohen and McIntyre families across three generations. The items worn by Melbourne architect, and Kew resident, Dione McIntyre date from the 1960s and 1970s, and include evening wear, day wear, hats and shoes. As Dione McIntyre often accompanied her husband, fellow architect Peter McIntyre, to formal events, there are a number of pieces of evening wear among the items. The McIntyre Collection also includes items worn by women of an earlier generation: by Lilian Cohen, Dione McIntyre's mother, and by her mother-in-law, the wife of the architect Robert McIntyre. At the other end of the chronological spectrum are a number of outfits belonging to, worn and donated by Annie McIntyre. These include outfits created by notable late 20th century Australian and/or international fashion designers. The McIntyre Collection is significant historically and artistically as it includes examples of design that demonstrate changing tastes in fashion over an 80-year period.
