Functional object - Conductors (Signal) Bell - JS pattern, John Stephenson
Bell used by the conductor or passengers to signal to the driver - stop, proceed or an emergency stop. The actual bell and part of the striker are missing. The striker has been broken off. The "JS" indicates it was made by John Stephenson of New York who made tramway equipment and the first cable tram saloon cars for Melbourne. Demonstrates a conductors communication or signal bell made for use on tramcars.Part of a brass Conductor Communication Bell, or signal bell, consisting of cast frame, part of the bell striker and bell pull part. Photo shows W1 class tram 475 in Collins St near Spencer Street, with a Mont Albert destination on a very hot day. All the sun louvers in saloons are drawn. The tram has been fitted with route number boxes which is painted the same colour as the roof. A gentlemen in a white suit is walking across to the tram carrying a Gladstone Bag. Pamphlet advertising the sale of land at the "Camberwell Panorama Estate" - Doncaster and Bulleen Road 13-10-1923. Gives terms of sale, photos showing the views and a nearby shopping centre. Has a large photo of MMTB No. 20 on the front cover. The tramcar is of the Hawthorn Tramways Trust four-door bogie type. MMTB No 20 was an ex-Prahran and Malvern single trucker or small tram A class. Gives details of the 110 lots to be sold, terms, location, and that the tram was proposed to be extended to the corner. This extension took place in 1937. The locality plan shows proposed plans for tram lines in Belmore Road and Burke Road north of Whitehorse Road. Tickets were bundled by the printer in sets of 1000 and issued to each depot Revenue Office clerks for distribution to the Conductors. These tickets comprise 30c City Section (green printing on off-white paper) and 50c (purple printing on off-white paper) tickets with numbers printed in black. Photos show the construction of King St overpass in Flinders St which was part of the project to construct a bridge over the Yarra River and provide a new southern outlet road between the city and eventually St Kilda Junction. The overpass construction was commenced in 1959 with tramway works first commencing. It was demolished in 2005. 1 - looking west at Market St. 2 - looking east from Spencer and Flinders St with the railway viaduct behind. 3 - Tram lines diverted onto the new overpass. Model - model tramcar - Representational of a Melbourne W2
This is a small commercially made tram model. Its design appears to be very loosely based on a Melbourne W Class tram design. The motorman’s cabin is realistic, but the body with its centre doorway does not look like any known tram designs. The wheels and their arrangement at the very ends of the tram are not realistic at all. No details of the maker, or where or when the model was made. Detailed in The Met colour scheme of the 1980s with the logo of the early 1980s. Demonstrates an operable model of a Melbourne SW5 class tram.Model of Melbourne Melbourne tram W5 (actually an SW5) No. 812, electric model, made by Cooee Concepts Pty Ltd in China. The model is packaged in a wooden packing case with a blue felt base, contained within a cardboard outer case. The cardboard cover or case has a printed sheet giving details of the model and the history of the W5 Class tramcar. The wooden case has a brass plate detailing the contents. Scale 00 or 1:76. Model made from plastic and metal, with operable lights and motors with operable trolley poles, swiveling bogies, the destination of St Kilda, showing route 16. Headlights function in the direction of travel. The package has a manufacturing date of 2008 printed on it.
