Photo looks over Shoppee Square (Central median area) in Sturt St between Armstrong and Doveton Streets, with the Town Hall and John Snow & Company (Snows) building in the view, along with the national mutual building. An ESCo tram is westbound on the south side of Sturt St. Note the telegraph pole on the left side of the photo. One the rear is a birthday message to a person in Hamilton Newcastle. Functional object - Key, Bundy Clock Key - 18A and K116, c1940?
.1 - Key - or Bundy Clock Key - brass, rounded head with drilled hole stamped "Tramways" on one side and "18" on the other side with a steel section that controlled the action of the recording clock and provided the means of stamping the number "18A" onto a paper tape. Used from South Melbourne depot in the time recording Bundy clocks that were located around the MMTB system. The photo shows a large crowd on an 8 hours (Labour Day) gathered in the eastern end or lower end of Sturt St. The 8-hour memorial or monument is in the centre of the photograph. Has one double-deck horse tram in view along with many other horse-drawn vehicles. On the Ballarat Mechanics Institute building is an advert for "Morrey & Tyler, the Cash Drapers" at 11 Bridge St Ballarat. Also in the view are Ribble, Suttons, E Payne, the Ballarat Gas Co. building and a dentist along with other buildings. In the bottom right-hand corner is an insert photo of the statue "The Flight from Pompeii".
