W. V. Hill Collection - William Valentine Hill was a journalist. He and his wife Annie and family came to 10 Pembroke Street in 1904. Jocelyn Hall notes suggest that the boy pictured is a son. If this is the case it would most likely be Albert Clement Hill born in 1902. The image looks too young to be a contemporaneous photo of him. This exercise book has been used by Winnifred (Winnie) Goodall in 1916 when she was a pupil at the Warrnambool Technical School. The material in the book mostly consists of letter-writing practice for business purposes. The Goodalls were pioneer settlers in the Warrnambool district with William and Ellen Goodall arriving in the area in the late 1840s. Eventually they had a property named Wanstead on the Allansford Road in East Warrnambool. One son, William, was an early manager of the Framlingham Aboriginal Settlement. Another son, Thomas, was a Warrnambool law clerk and Winnie, (born 1901 to mother Leah), was his granddaughter. The Warrnambool Technical School was established in 1913.This exercise book is of interest as an example of school work completed by a Warrnambool Technical School student in 1916. It is also of interest because it belonged to Winnie Goodall, a member of an important pioneering family in the Warrnambool district. This is a school exercise book with a cardboard cover and 17 double pages. The cover has a mottled pattern of brown and mauve and the pages have been attached by metal staples but the staples have been removed. The pages have blue ruled lines with handwritten material in blue and black ink. Some of the pages have red hand-drawn lines. The cover is slightly torn. On the first page two cartoon sketches from a newspaper have been pasted in. This newspaper was sent by the Shire President Cr F. Deery from Bairnsdale to P.C. Cameron, Orbost Shire President. It was sent on the first aeroplane to arrive in Orbost. The Commonwealth plane in the charge of Lieut. Oakes landed in Mr McPhee's paddock at Newmerella. It left for Sale on the same day.The purpose of the plane's visit was to raise subscriptions towards the WW1 peace loan. There is a plaque commemorating the oversubscription to the peace loan by the Shire of Orbost by 1919.A yellowed Herald newspaper from September 9 1919. Married Margaret Webb (1886 - 1946) in 1916. Appointments included Hawthorn, Stawell, Preston and Devonport. Methodist Chaplain in the A.I.F., Methodist Chaplain at the Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital. Home Missions 1953 - 1964. Retired to live with his daughter in the U.K. Alfred John Bremer (1893 - 1919) Bank clerk. Contracted anterior poliomyelitis whilst on active service.
