Book - 92 pages plus card covers, a historical survey of the Sebastopol district. Originally written by E.D. Jenkins for the Borough of Sebastopol's centenary in 1964, reprinted with additional text by Lloyd Jenkins to recognise the 125th anniversary of the Borough covering the years 1965 to 1989. Book covers mining history, churches, the Borough Council, early days of the district and various points, eg cabmen, horse trams and electric trams, schools, the Mechanics Institute, various clubs, fire brigade, hotels, industries, and programme of events to celebrate the centenary. The second part of the book, covering the period is laid out in a chronological order with forward by Cr. Donald, the Mayor with many photographs. Centre page has a large map of the district showing the many mines, leads, roads and other historic locations. The 1919 bushfire was the worst the area suffered. The fire struck on Saturday afternoon on the 15th February. It destroyed the station at Lavers Hill and Crowes, departmental residences at Lavers Hill and Weeaproinah, the overhead bridges at Beech Forest and Wimba, and damaged the track at various points along the line so that two locomotives became temporarily marooned at Beech Forest.. By the following Tuesday a daily fire relief train had begun operation. By the following Sunday a special train loaded with army tents travelled through to Lavers Hill and deposited most of its consignment there because little remained of this sizeable settlement. An outsider would have had difficulty in picking the place. The letters of the Lavers Hill station nameboard had been burnt although the metal letters survived, and one of the local wags had rearranged them to read "LIARS HELL". By the 1920s water trains were being used to help fight fires, a simple NQR open wagon loaded with the standard 1500 litre square iron water tank.B/W. The Victoria Tower made landfall after a voyage of 85 days from Liverpool, and headed towards the Port Phillip Heads pilot boarding ground. It had been an uneventful voyage despite some contrary headwinds (causing the long voyage) and problems with the compasses, that could not be relied upon. The weather was hazy, with gale force winds and heavy rain squalls. Reaching the pilot ground Captain Kerr fired rockets and burned blue lights to attract attention, but met with no response. Sighting the Cape Shank lighthouse he sailed towards it, then wore the Victoria Tower onto a port tack in a westerly direction. No soundings nor observations were taken, as Captain Kerr was confident he was on a safe course and knew his position tolerably well. Born in 1844 Prince Alfred was the fourth child and second son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. He joined the Royal Navy at age 14 as a midshipman and by 1866 had attained the rank of captain and had command of HMS Galatea, a steam-powered sail-equipped frigate. In the same year, Alfred was made Duke of Edinburgh. In January 1867 the Galatea set sail from Plymouth on a round the world voyage visiting the Mediterranean before making a state visit to the emperor of Brazil. Two months were spent in the Cape Colony in South Africa before crossing the Indian Ocean to Australia. The Prince continued his tour to country Victoria and in Bendigo tragedy struck on 18th Dec 1867. A model of the royal ship Galatea, crewed by young boys, was the centerpiece of a reception and a procession. The procession circled round, and entering the Camp Reserve piled the torches into one general bonfire. At this time the demonstration of the evening was marred by a sad accident. The Bendigo Volunteer Fire Brigade put on a demonstration with lighted torches which were carelessly extinguished, embers floated onto the model ship which quickly caught fire. Witnesses also reported that firecrackers were being thrown. the accident was caused either owing, to the fireworks or careless use of the torches. Three boys in the model ship were burned to death and several others injured. The Volunteer Fire Brigades' rigged ship Galatea, which had formed a conspicuous object in the proceedings of the morning was driven along the crowded thoroughfare manned with young citizens dressed in sailor costumes, and took fire from the fireworks. Some of the sails immediately caught fire, and before an escape could be made, four of the occupants were most severely burnt. With. the assistance of the bystanders, the flames were quenched, but so severe were the injuries sustained by the lads, that they had to be conveyed to the hospital. Of the four, one, James Brown, son of Mr.James Brown, formerly, of the Water Supply department in Sandhurst and now of Tasmania, recovered from his injuries, but the other three died shortly after the accident. They were Wm. Langston McGrath, Sylvester Francis Cahill and Thomas Walters, each about eight years of age. They were buried at the Back Creek Cemetery, and a movement, initiated b ythe citizens, resulted in their graves being marked by public memorials. In connection with this sad event it should be mentioned that when the explosion of fireworks on board the model ship took place, Mr. Meagher, the captain of the brigade, although struck on the head by a rocket, dragged several of the boys from the flames. He and Mr. Hickey, one of the members of the brigade, were severely burned in their efforts to save the boys, in which they were assisted by Mr. Irving.Bendigo Historical Society excursion to the Bendigo Cemetery and visit to the graves and memorial of the three boys burned to death in a model of the ship Galatea during the visit of the Duke of Edinburgh in 1867. The brigade decided to apply to the council for uniforms and a bell; and after adopting rules for their guidance the meeting separated. The Volunteer Fire Brigade was replaced in 1891 by a detachment of the Metropolitan Fire Brigade and a new Fire Station in Walton Street constructed in 1893; subsequently demolished in 1941.The certificate includes the only known image of the first fire station in Kew. This gun sight was brought home from WWI (1914-1918) by members of the 13th Battery 5th Field Artillery Brigade (Albury Battery) as a souvenir of its action in the first battle of Bullecourt April 1917. On one occasion during the battle the Battery was surrounded by a German counter attack. They dragged their guns out of the gun pits and continued firing to the flanks and rear and supported the Australian counter penetration attack which restored the situation. After the war a recreational reserve in Albury NSW was named Noreuil Park after the French village near where the action occurred.A rare object with significant connection to Albury NSW and its citizen soldiers who served with the AIF in WWI (1914-1918). The engraving gives it close association with the recreational park in Albury named after the French village of Noreuil and honouring the soldiers who fought there with great courage. By arrangment with local and family history librarian, Myra Dowling, this diary was transcribed by Sandra Dexter from the original, which was donated to the City of Boroondara Library Service following the Boroondara Remembers project in 2015. It is a day-to-day account of a soldier's experience going to fight in World War 1, 1914-1919. Robert Thomas Garford (SERN 1138) was born in Fitzroy in 1892. He was aged 23 and living in Camberwell when he enlisted on 14 September 1914. He embarked from Melbourne on board HMAT A38 Ulysses on 22 December 1914. He was a sapper with the 2nd Divisional Signal Company. He was awarded a Military Medal: 'At CLERY, near MT.ST. QUENTIN, on the 31st of August 1918, this soldier was engaged as a linesman at the Brigade Forward Station. Throughout the day forward lines were repeatedly broken by enemy shell fire. Despite this Sapper FARFORD [sic], with very conspicuous coolness patrolled the lines from end to end repairing one break after another. His untiring efforts were responsible for the constant maintenance of communications from the Brigade Station to the Battalions.' Source: 'Commonwealth Gazette' No. 115, 10 October 1919. He returned to Australia 3 December 1918. He married Annie Christina Devine in 1941. They lived at 16 York Street, Surrey Hills and later 17 Blackburn Street, Surrey Hills. Vines Timber yard was established in 1897 after the timber yard established by Donald Douglas in 1887 was acquired by William James Vine in 1896. Vines Timber yard was managed by William and his son Albert Ernest (Ernie) until the 1950s when there were no vacant blocks of land in Surrey Hills and less requirement for building materials. William Vine is listed in the 1893 directory as living in Albany Crescent. He married Sarah Elizabeth Gunner in 1881. The business was badly affected by a large fire in 1920. Albert Vine (1903-1968) was a Camberwell councillor from 1926-1934. He was also Mayor of Camberwell in 1940/41 and a councillor from 1937-1944. ‘By Wagga Design’ is the winner of the Art Quilt Australia 2019 Expressions: Wool Quilt Prize. Barbara Mellor, of St Helens in Tasmania, made this quilt after researching the history of waggas and was fascinated by this early form of recycling. ‘By Wagga Design’ is her contemporary take on the traditional wagga that was born out of hard times and limited resources. Barbara wrote the poem below while thinking of the workers who used waggas while travelling: Black night campfire night sheep in the shadows dreams on the track a comforting wagga stitched with love for a homesick heart. The wagga was made in 2017 and was first submitted into the Bay of Fires Art Prize. In 2018 the wagga was submitted into the Break O’Day Stitchers Quilting and Embroidery Exhibition, where it won the Hanger’s Prize. Barbara sourced the fabrics used from a variety of places. Some are from her personal collection while others were given to her. She purchased a woollen three-piece suit from a local op shop and decided to incorporate it into the design, making some unique and distinctive shapes. Another distinctive feature of the quilt is the patch labelled ‘Parkside’. Barbara noted that it was cut from a blanket she purchased from a garage sale from a property that had once been a caravan park titled ‘Parkside’ in the 1960s. The filling of the wagga contains the rest of the Parkside blanket.Quilt made from various woollen garments and bedding in cool tone colours. Patches mostly cut into square and rectangle shapes. Tim HOLMES Born Wales Tim Holmes first became interested in pottery on a visit to New Zealand in 1969. After returning home he studied at the local art school, then enrolled at the Harrow School of Art in 1973. While there, he was introduced to Gwyn Hanssen Pigott's work, and returned to Australia to help her set up a pottery in Tasmania. He established his own Garden Island Creek Pottery in 1977, and started making wood-fired pottery, digging and milling his own clay. He used a two- chambered kiln, firing raw- glazed domestic stoneware in the first chamber and earthenware garden pots in the second. In 1988, he moved his pottery to the Potter's Croft at Dunalley on the east coast of Tasmania. He and his wife Tammy now run the Potter's Croft as a bed and breakfast with a craft gallery, and he is still making pottery using a wood-fired kiln. Garden Island Creek Pottery had its own impressed stamp, and work may also be impressed 'TH' or incised 'T. Holmes'. Bruce ANDERSON (20 August 1950- Born Surry Hills, Melbourne, Victoria In 1971 Bruce Anderson obtained a Diploma of Art (Sculpture) from the Prahran Institute of Technology. For the next two years, he worked at Raynham Ceramics in East Bentleigh, making slipcast ware. After a year of National Service, he completed a teacher education course at the State College of Victoria, Auburn and taught for a time in the secondary school system. In 1977, he moved to Queensland to take up a position as Head of the Ceramics Department at Townsville TAFE. In 1984, he relocated to the Darling Downs Institute in Toowoomba and was still teaching there in his entry in the 1986-7 directory, working in raku and blackware fired with gas in a ceramic fibre kiln. During 1986, he moved to Adelaide to take up a position as senior lecturer in ceramics at the South Australian School of Design. During the late 1980s and 1990s, he began to make sculptural works of architactural form cast from a mixture of terracotta clay and refractory concrete. Part-glazed, the works allude to primitive industry and utilitarianism. Kingsley MARKS (1929 - ) Kingsley Marks trained at the South Australian School of Art before teaching secondary schools. He became interested in pottery after attending a class one night a week at the John Martins building in Adelaide. He received grants to travel and study ceramics in Mexico the US and Canada, then taught for twenty years at the Torrens and South Australian Colleges of Advanced Education. Upon his retirement in 1985, he moved to Brentwood near Minlaton and established the Brentwood Pottery, specialising in sculptural work using a range of forming, decorative and firing techniques. All Malcolm Boyd's pot's are hand built using moulding, coiling, slabbing, and modelling techniques, and are high temperature fired (1300C) to allow some of the very ancient oriental glazes to mature. All works spend at least 20 hours in the wood fired kilns. This work is part of the Jan Feder Memorial Ceramics Collection which was amassed with funds raised by Jan Feder's student peers at the Gippsland Centre for Art and Design in the mid 1980s after Jan Feder passed away. Although many of the works are donated the intention of the collection was to purchase from visiting lecturers who became leading ceramic artists around the world, as well as from many of the staff who taught at the Churchill Campus. Chris HEADLEY Born in York, England Chris Headley studied at York School of Art before majoring in ceramics at the Central School of Art in London, learning to throw with (the late) Michael Casson and hand-build with Gordon Baldwin. Chris graduated in 1973 and travelled overland across Europe and Asia, through Turkey, Afghanistan,and Iran arriving in Australia. A year after leaving England, he arrived in Australia, where he has lived and worked ever since. He undertook his Master’s degree at the Australian National University, graduating in 1991, and in 1999, with Dr Owen Rye as his supervisor, gained his PhD from Monash University, Victoria. Together they ran the grocery store at 10 Croydon Road from 1949 until some time after 1954. In the 1980s they were living in Highbury Road, East Burwood and Clive was working for Unigate (later Bonlac) in a managerial position. (REF: Oral testimony, Libby Wilson, Canterbury History Group). The shop continued after the Swifts left but was later destroyed by fire. Clive Swift died in March 2014. This and other dockets were tucked into Ruth Matthews' recipe folder. Ruth and Harold Geoffrey (Geoff) Matthews lived at 42 Guildford Road, Surrey Hills. The donor recalled that her paternal grandmother (Ethel May Matthews) also occasionally shopped at the Swifts' shop as it was closer to her home (31 Guildford Road) than either than Griffith’s on Union Road or Thomas’ on Maling Road .
