Photograph, Edwin Anderson, 1st Kew, Bulleen, 1924, 1924
A group of Scouts lining up for a meal. It would have been cooked by the ‘duty patrol’, with each patrol of Scouts taking turns at being the ‘duty patrol’. During this period, the local Scouts were recorded as regularly camping at Bulleen, on the property of a friendly farmer. As well as short overnight camps, the Scout Troop would have had a longer 8 to 10 day camp over the Christmas holidays every year. In the 1920s the Scouts often transported their camping gear by means of a hand-pulled ‘trek-cart’, which is no doubt why camping just down the road at Bulleen would have had appeal! Hot water bottle (warme kruik)
Given to former prisoners in Japanese camps in the former Dutch East Indies after liberation 1946. Dutch colonists suffered incarceration under the Japanese occupation of former Dutch East Indies. Post-war many returned to The Netherlands where they suffered from the cold. It was difficult for them to settle in and this gift would have been a welcome gesture of acceptance.Hollow cylindrical copper tube with copper screw top with circular handle. Handwritten label says: Warm water kruik aan ons gegeven toen wij koud en berooid uit de Japanse kampen kwamen Jan 1946 (Hot water bottle given to us when we came out of the Japanese camps, cold and destitute, Jan 1946).hot water bottle -

Photograph - Victorian Canoe Club, Breakfast on wharf after camping on lower Yarra, 1930
Canoeing on the River Yarra at Melbourne was an important and widespread recreational pursuit for Melbournians, especially in the first half of the twentieth century. The Victorian Canoe Club was formed in 1912 at a meeting in Melbourne and its first committee elected in the same year. Records indicate that the Club continued into at least the 1950s .The photos in this album are historically and socially significant as a record of recreational activities in the first half of the twentieth century. A number of photographs in the album provide views of sections of the Yarra, as well as areas in regional Victoria, that may otherwise be unavailable. One of 12 sepia [faded] photographs of members of the Victorian Canoe Club. This photo shows the six club members on the trip eating breakfast on a wharf in a location on the Lower Yarra, before canoeing on to Port Phillip Bay. Melbourne Legacy
Photograph, Legacy camp, Balnarring East, 1929, 1929
One of the earliest camps held for Junior Legatees, showing tents, charabancs and fashions of the day. Legatee Stan Savige had a property in the Balnarring area and some camps were held on his property. Names noted on the back of the photos include: Pat Hanna, Aaron Beattie, Stan Savige, Sandy Lowe, Bill Pearce, Lyn Rule, Donovan Joynt, Carl Carleton, George Collins, Bill Pearce, Rupert Hely, Norman Stafford. Some of these were founding legatees. Melbourne Legacy provided camps for junior legatees - the children of deceased servicemen. It started in the early years of Legacy with outings to the property of Legacy founder, Legatee Stan Savige, who had a place in Balnarring. Permanent camp buildings were built in the 1930s. The camps gave the children an opportunity of a summer beach holiday with other Legacy children.A visual record of a camp run for Junior Legatees, with founder Stan Savige in one of the photographs, showing the accommodation and activities.Folding wallet, brown and cream with black printing, set of sepia photos varying sizes, 1 negative for 00061.7Wallet: 00061.1 “77283” (pencil), Kodak (Australasia) marketing text Photos: 00061.2 “Legacy Camp, Balnarring Xmas 1930/Taken by Aaron Beattie/Pat Hanna rear/Bill Pearce Lfront Lyn Rule/Donovan Joynt Centre Front/Carl Carlton Right Front/Child unknown/extreme left 2 unknown poss. from Bendigo Club” 00061.3 “N 481” 00061.5 “N 481” 00061.6 “Legacy Club Camp Hut/Balnarring East/ 7.
