Perceval Selwyn Richards (ARVIA) was a Ballarat architect who from 1900 to 1940 was responsible for innovative Edwardian and Art Deco style buildings in the district. In 1904 his office was at the Mercantile Building on the corner of Armstrong and Dana Streets, Ballarat. Perceval Selwyn Richards was born 21 July 1865 at Christchurch, New Zealand. He married Alice Emma Nicholson. Percy Richardson sailed to Melbourne, Australia in 1887 to find employment in an architect’s office. On arrival in Ballarat started as an assistant in the architectural firm of William Brazenor, where he worked for six years before continuing with the business after Brazenor's death. He taught Architecture at the Ballarat School of Mines from 1918 to 1921. As well as his work from the Ballarat and District Anglican Diocese and the Ballarat and the Western Districts. Ballarat & Clarendon College is also one of his designs. Shire of Grenville Hall and Angus shop, Sussex Street, Linton. Dating the photograph: The photograph can be dated to after 1887, when John Angus purchased the shop building (originally owned by Thomas Austin) from B. N. Dodd. 'W. Angus': From 1887 until the late 1890s the shop was run by John Angus' wife Wilhelmina Angus, who often advertised her business in the local newspaper, the 'Grenville Standard' (see photograph of advertisement, Registration no. 2019-346). It is not known when Mrs Angus retired, but it is understood that her son William then took over the shop. Elsie Jennings, an Angus descendant, recalled in a letter to LDHS that her uncle had run a draper's shop at this site. (See letter in "Linton - Township History - Recollections and reminiscences' file.) It is not clear whether the "W. Angus" in the sign refers to Wilhelmina Angus or to William Angus.Enlarged black and white copy of original photograph, which has been mounted on white card. The photograph shows a two-storey brick building, and next to it a double-fronted shop. The two-storey building is the original Grenville Shire Hall, built in the mid 1860s. The fence outside it is being used to post notices. Two large pine trees are between the fence and the building. The smaller shop next to the hall has a verandah supported by round timber posts, and signs across the front of the verandah read "Tailor" and "W. Angus". Two men engaged in conversation with each other are standing to the left under the verandah. Child-size rocking horse made and sold by a patient of Mayday Hills Asylum. Purchased in 1978 and used by a family for generations.Mayday Hills Asylum was one of the three largest psychiatric hospitals in Victoria, and played an important role in the treatment of mental health illnesses from its establishment in 1867 to its closure in 1995. As part of prescribed treatment, many patients participated in craft activities were they were able to create an array of objects. In 1959 the Victoria Police purchased this house in Pryor Street to be refurbished as the Eltham Police Station. In 1961 the Police moved out of 728 Main Road and into the Pryor Street building following required modifications to bring it in line with the standards used for Police Stations throughout the State.The Margaret Ball (Pre 1960s Houses) Collection was a personal project initiated to mark the year 2000 and arose as a result of the disappearance of many pre-1960s parts of Eltham due to development. Approximately 200 pre-1960s style houses that were left in Eltham between Main Road and east to Bible Street, between Cecil Street to the north and south to Dalton Street were photographed in late 1999. The photo probably includes Barbara, Ken and Laurie Young, the children of Ernest Lance (Lance) Young and his wife Beryl Mair who married in 1939 and came to 11 York Street during the WW2 years. The donor does not recognise all of the children. Linda Lawrence is the tallest girl; her brother Ken is largely obscured. Laurie is the youngest girl with the pigtails.
