Ration, Special Flying, Circa 1942 - 1945 for similar packs
A military dark green painted steel container which is empty. This was a sealed container with rations for RAAF aircrew undertaking long duration flights. Khaki painted metal tin which contains rations, for use in aircraft. Printed in black on top of the detachable metal cover, which would have been taped down on top of the ring-pull lid, is; 'D^D / Made in Australia / Packed by MacROBERTSON'S / SPECIAL FLYING RATION / To be consumed by Air Crew carrying / out flights of 4 hour duration or longer. / List of contents on inside of lid / KEEP PACK INTACT / R.A.A.F / A Gadsden Container'. Printed on the top of the ring-pull lid is 'D^D D^D Contents believed to be (obtained from similar "Special Flying Ration") / Nuts. (Shelled) 4 ozs / Barley Sugar 3 ozs / Raisins 4 ozs / Chocolate ozs / Chewing Gum 3 pkts / Fruit Juice 8 ozs'. -

Kit, Spare Parts, 1942
Spare parts kit for the Lamps Signalling Daylight used by the Australian defence forces during World War 2. A small dark green painted metal container with a hinging lid which contains parts and instructions, including three spare lamp bulbs. Within the container there is a smaller tinplate container with a lid which has electrical contacts and connectors. Refer item 00417The container lid has the following inscription: "LAMPS SIGNALLING DAYLIGHT BOX SPARE PARTS MKII" and "PMG 1942" -

Collection, J R Clancy
The recipient of this medal is believed to be VX44669 Private James Robert Clancy of Thougla Upper which was in the Shire of Upper Murray. Private Clancy was born in Sandy Creek on 30 August 1903 enlisted in the Army on 8 July 1940 and was discharged on 8 March 1943. He served in the Signals Section of the 2nd Australian Anti-Aircraft Regiment.Municipalities in Australia recognised their residents who enlisted in World Wars by the issue of some form of recognition. This is a nice example of a medallic form of such recognition.A collection of items presented by the family of WWll Australian Army serviceman James Robert Clancy VX44669. Clancy was a signalman in the 2/2 Heavy Anti-Aircraft Regiment. Refer to items 00456.1, 00456.2, 00456.3 and 00456.4. -

Document, Certificate, W. and J. Barr, ca 1918
Framed certificate in honour of Australian Army World War 1 serviceman Private Frederick Alfred Evans, service number 4803 of the 60th Battalion Australian Imperial Force. Evans had enlisted at Carlton, Melbourne, on the 20th July, 1915 and embarked from Melbourne for overseas service with the 5th Battalion on 7th March, 1916. Evans was later killed in action in France on the 19th July, 1916. This is an example of the certificate presented by the City of Fitzroy to local servicemen who had enlisted. The certificate is dated 15 April, 1918, and in this case, the certificate was presented to the deceased serviceman's family. The elaborate certificate is printed, in colour, on a quality card type paper and has a number 375 printed at the bottom left hand corner. The certificate is complete with the original cardboard tube in which it was stored.The certificate has the inscription: W. and J. Barr, Print., 105-7 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy -

A small pocket book used as a diary by Australian Army World War 2 serviceman Private George Edward (Red) Miller, service number VX3693 of the 5th Battalion, 2nd Australian Imperial Force. The diary contains notes relating to Miller's service with the Australian Army in Palestine, Egypt, Libya and Greece. The pocket book has a folding cover and is covered in a buff coloured linen. A leave pass issued to Australian Army World War 2 serviceman Private George Edward (Red) Miller, service number VX3693 of the 5th Battalion, 2nd Australian Imperial Force. The pass was issued on the 28th July, 1940 entitling Miller to take leave from 0650 hours to 1700 with permission for him to proceed to Jerusalem. The pass is printed on paper and has been completed with hand written details and comments. (refer to items 00460 and 00460.1) -

Dressing, Field, John Tye & Son, 1917
Small, packaged First Field Dressing issued to Australian and British service personnel during World War 1. The package is made of a tough, protective (waterproof?) fabric and comes complete with a safety pin for use as a bandage. These were carried by soldiers and used for initial treatment of wounds. A small cardboard tube container which originally held an Iodine Ampoule for external treatment of wounds. These were issued to World War 1 Australian and British service personnel for initial treatment of wounds whilst in the field. This item has a printed label with instructions for use and was packaged by W. H. Whatmough, London in 1914.There is a label affixed to this item with the following inscription printed in black: "Iodine Ampoule for External Use", "Made by the Patentee", "W. H. A pair of serviceman's personal identification tags, Vietnam era, issued to (Private) H (Herman) E (Emil) ERBACHER, who was born in Germany, 12/2/1948 and served with the 4RAR from 12/5/1968 to 30/5/1969. These tags are attached to a jungle green coloured nylon cord, 2mm diameter. Standard WW2 era Australian Army issue, pattern 1937 equipment pack made of heavy weight cotton webbing material in the standard khaki colour. This pack was carried on the wearer's back, supported by two straps worn over the shoulder. These packs were used by military personnel to carry personal equipment items whilst in the field. This pack type is square in shape and has additional straps for attaching to webbing. The front of the pack has 'NX 83432 G Siddaway' written in black. The top flap of the pack is secured by two straps which attach to brass buckles secured by canvas loops to the front of the pack.This pack is stamped with the standard Australian Dept of Defence mark and has the serviceman's name "NX 83432 G. Sidaway" -

Medal
An example of the Liberation Medal, fifth class, issued by the government of Kuwait for service during the Liberation of Kuwait campaign in the Gulf War of 1990 to 1993. This medal was provided to eligible Australian service personnel however is not worn as an official service decoration. This medal is engraved with the following; Hillier D. N. service number 322256. These are made of Bronze with coloured enamel features and have a ribbon with red, white and green vertical stripes. The medal complete with a service ribbon, is in a plastic presentation case which is stored in a protective cardboard sleeve. -

Souvenir, Trophy
A trophy in the form of a small replica of an Australian Army 'slouch hat' mounted on a circular stand. The 'slouch hat' is silver plated, has a turned brim on the left hand side and has a 'rising sun' hat badge. The circular stand is made of a light gauge steel which has been pressed in the form of an inverted dish and is coloured with a mid brown finish. There is a silver plated label attached to the dish which has been engraved indicating that this item was originally a trophy (origin unknown). The label has the following engraved inscription "R. The Official RSL Tankard Collection issued to commemorate the four main conflicts in which Australian service personnel had participated prior to issue in 1983. This limited edition set of four tankards was manufactured by Franklin Mint and was exclusively for RSL members. Each tankard depicts three scenes relating to the particular conflict represented. The tankards are circular and incorporate a handle. Each of these large tankards is made of white glazed porcelain and has a capacity of 0.6 litres. Munition, Trench Art
World War 2 brass munition cases of Japanese and Australian origins. This is an example of 'trench art' having been made into a flower vase. Vase is a Japanese brass 30mm anti-aircraft shell case with a 1938 Territory of New Guinea silver one shilling coin affixed to the side of the shell case. the top of the case is slighltly splayed to form a decorative lip. Either side of the case are two Australian .303 spent cartridges vertically mounted and attached by two further cut-down .303 cases. The vertical cartridge cases have bullets insertedThe 30mm case has several Japanese characters on the base, naval anchors and the English S4/17 The .303 cases are marked M6 VII 1942 -

Booklet, WW1 era
Small booklet produced by the Australian Branch of the Red Cross Society, Headquarters and Central Depot, with guidelines for making donations of goods such as clothing, linen, blankets, bandages, books and food items to the Australian War effort and instructions for knitting woollen items of clothing intended for defence personnel on active service. The booklet is not dated however it is from the WW1 era and has twenty pages.The booklet front page has the following text: "RED CROSS SOCIETY", "AUSTRALIAN BRANCH", "Headquarters and Central Depot" and a note printed in red "When forwarding parcels, send by post complete duplicate list with number of each article to Officer-in-Charge." The Red Cross symbol is featured in the form of a red +. -

Helmet, Steel MK111
An example of a British pattern steel battle helmet painted dark Khaki, complete with camouflage netting, chin strap and inner support liner. This is an Australian Army type MK111 steel helmet, standard issue for Australian infantry personnel during WW11 operations. The inside of the helmet is padded with a protective, dense rubber liner and has an adjustable cotton webbing chin strap. Australian manufacture, dated 1942, similar to the British "Brodie" pattern steel helmet originally introduced during WW1. The rim of the helmet is stamped '1942' and is marked number '7'. -

Hat, Felt
Standard Australian Department of Defence issue khaki fur felt slouch hat as worn by Army personnel. The hat brim has a bound edge finish and one side of the brim is folded against the hat crown. A letter sent to Australia by an Australian Army serviceman whilst on duty in Kure, Japan during the post World War 2 occupation. The serviceman is Driver B. Gillott service number VX97756, of the 1 Australian Salvage Unit of the B.C.O.F. The letter is dated 15th July, 1946 and is of five handwritten pages of approximately 8 x 5 inches in size. The stationery is printed in red ink with the Salvation Army, Australian Comforts Fund and YMCA insignia above the ruled writing area. The paper is a buff colour.This writing paper has the insignia of The Salvation Army, Australian Comforts Fund and YMCA printed in red above the ruled writing area. -

A loose pack of 53 sheets of printed writing paper distributed to service personnel for the purpose of writing to their family and friends. This stationery is printed in red ink with a ruled writing area above which is a letterhead. The letterhead features the names of the charitable organisations involved in producing and distributing the stationery. The reverse side of the paper has ruled lines printed vertically in blue ink. The paper is approximately 8 x 5 inches in size and is a buff colour.The paper has printed letterhead with the "AUSTRALIAN COMFORTS FUND", "VICTORIAN DIVISION", the ACF insignia and the note "With Which is Affiliated". The affiliated organisation names are also printed, being "R.S.L War Service Fund", "Y.M.C.A.", "The Salvation Army" and the "Y.W.C.A." -

Stand, Tripod, Puddefoot Bowers & Simonett Limited, ca 1940
A portable, three legged stand in the form of a tripod, used by Australian and British Commonwealth military forces for mounting the standard issue signaling lamp and heliograph. The three collapsible, metal tipped, wooden legs are joined by hinge fittings to a brass collar with a threaded mount at one end (the head). The mounting thread is approximately 38mm diameter and fitted with a protective cap which can be removed for use, the cap being retained by a length of light chain. The stand is complete with a leather and webbing carrying strap attached to the head fitting of the stand with a leather sleeve at the other end which fits over the free end of the legs when folded.The brass collar and mount is stamped : "STAND LAMP OR HELIO A MKlll" and has the manufacturer "PUDDEFOOT, BOWERS & SIMONETT LTD, LONDON, 1940".
