Emmanuel College is the result of the amalgamation of St Ann's girls' college and Christian Brothers' College boys' school in 1991. Mother Philomene Maguire arrived in Warrnambool and commenced a Convent of Mercy and school with the consent of the then Bishop of Victoria, Bishop Goold. The school opened in Wyton House in Botanic Road. Brother Egan arrived in 1902 and set up a Brothers' group and school and 104 boys enrolled. Since its inception in 1991 Emmanuel College provides a broad education for students to Year 12 level. A number of students have achieved a high profile in the community, including footballer Jonathan Brown, television personality Dave Hughes, educatior Professor Colin Ferguson, musician Shane Howard, Olympic cyclist Michelle Ferris.This booklet briefly documents the history of Emmanuel College and its predecessors St Ann's and CBC and includes a list of their more prominent and well-known 'inspiring alumni'. 21St Battalion A.I.F. Stone
Stone from Abbey ruins at Mont St. Quentin, captured by the 21st Battalion A.I.F. on 1st Sept. 1918 & presented to the Myrtleford Sub-Branch by the Twenty-First Battalion Association, 20th November, 1971.The Stone is from the Abbey at Mont St. Quentin, captured by the 21st Battalion, 2nd Division A.I.F., on the 1st Sept. 1918. A Battle described by General Sir Henry Rawlinson, Commander, British Fourth Army as "The finest single feat of the War". During this Battle Sergeant "Alby" Lowerson, from Myrtleford was awarded the Victoria Cross for leading several men to capture a group of enemy machine guns that were holding up the advance. The Stone was presented in 1971 by members of the 21st Battalion Association, (named on the reverse side) to Myrtleford Sub-Branch R.S.L. Fredrick Charles Dix enlisted 8th July 1915 at Castlemaine (at the time he was living with his Mother and stepfather in Fryers Town) after serving in the Senior Cadets. He was taken on by the 9th Light horse and sent to Egypt for further training. Unit embarked from Adelaide, South Australia, on board HMAT A30 Borda on 11 January 1916.He served in France and was wounded by shrapnel in the eye socket but eventually returned to active duty on the front.He returned to Australia 6 September 1919 Sgt. F. C. Dix 1790 9th light horse 13th reinforcement 13 Field Artillery Brigade where he (several times) attained the rank of Sergeant. He also served during WWII at Nowra as a driver. Denis Gibbons (1937 – 2011) Trained with the Australian Army, before travelling to Vietnam in January 1966, Denis stayed with the 1st Australian Task Force in Nui Dat working as a photographer. For almost five years Gibbons toured with nine Australian infantry battalions, posting compelling war images from within many combat zones before being flown out in late November 1970 after sustaining injuries. The images held within the National Vietnam Veterans Museum make up the Gibbons Collection. A black and white photograph of Sergeant Fred J Roberts 22, Nowra, NSW, of 3rd Special Air Service (SAS) Squadron 1st Australian Task Force Base. At the time he was advised of his receipt of the Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM).
