Bert Vivian (1893-1974) was a second generation Portland saddler. His father William had operated a saddlery in Rosebery in the Victorian Mallee before relocating to Portland in the late 19th century. Bert began work as a saddler at W. H. Vivian, at 58-60 Percy Street Portland, continuing in the business after his father’s death in 1928. The Gaol at Portland was in operation as early as 1852. It was reproclaimed in the Government Gazette, along with several other prisons in the colony, in October 1877. In 1892, it was proclaimed a Police Gaol, under the provisions of the Gaols Act 1890. Duncan and Katrina Munro sailed from the Isle of Skye with their daughters, Christina and Isabella on the 20th May 1854 aboard the ship ARABIAN. Isabella died on board and William was born at sea. They arrived at Portland Bay on 18th (?) September 1845. Their other eight children were born at Portland. (lower centre). -

Alexander Davidson arrived in Australia in 1838 as a poor Scotsman, a mason by trade. Alexander was to work hard and amass enough savings to allow him to invest in an established Squatting Run in 1848. As stated in his obituary "by patient industry and perseverance acquired considerable wealth as a squatter on the Satima station, near Casterton" on the Wando River in Victoria. He was at first a part-owner of the Satimer Run with his brother-in-law Duncan Robertson, but was able to buy out his brother-in-law's share in 1860. In 1864, with proceeds of his squatting income, he built a two storey stucco rendered bluestone house in Portland which he called "Wando Villa", which is today a Heritage Listed Building.Black and white photo. This was the first police station built in Watgania, and it was probably built during the goldrush era of late19C to early 20C.The photo is of local significance to Watgania and the Ararat district because of its rarity and because of its subject. There is now (in the year 2023) little or nothing left of the township of Watgania, north of Willaura, though there are still several inhabited properties in this area, which shelters close under the eastern face of the Grampians mountains. The figures in the photo add to its significance, since a good deal of information about the goldfields can be gleaned from their manner and their dress.Black and white photograph mounted on cardboard. Early photograph of the Warrak Cricket Club. This photo was donated by a regular donor to the Langi Morgala Museum.Unfortunately its date of manufacture is not yet known. It is of local significance to Warrak because of its rarity and presumed early date. This significance is ameliorated because the date of manufacture is so far only assumed. Black and white photograph, with information written on a cardboard label attached to the bottom of the photo. Photo shows 15 men in two rows. The men in the back row are standing while the front row is kneeling.
