Strange Birds in Paradise : A West Papuan Story, Nicolai, Jamie, 2009
Blurb from the back: While the Indonesian army continues to dominate the indigenous inhabitants of West Papua, Hill-Smith records the fate of West Papuans trying to maintain village life against a backdrop of covert military violence. In the West Papuan highlands, Hill-Smith - an Australian writer, cartoonist and comedian - hears stories of escape, oppression and exile and listens to the defiant songs of murdered musician and independence hero Arnold Ap. Together with friends Donny Roem, a recent exile, and Jacob Rumbiak, a child soldier in the West Papuan resistance movement, Hill-Smith returns to Melbourne to record outlawed folk songs with renowned Australian rock musicologist David Bridie. An extraordinary story of an imaginative, adaptable culture confronting tyranny with the joyful power of art, music and self-expression.Relevant to the history of West Papua and the Indonesian military presence and violence. Use of music to draw attention to the issues faced by West Papua.DVDFront cover: Title, rating (M), picture of winged West Papuan Man with guitar, "Winner Best Doco SBS IF award 2010". The bell came from the ship Netherby, which was wrecked on King Island. The full story of the bell's journey from King Island is unclear, but assumption is that Roadknight family may have transferred it from their property in the Western District to Gippsland. It was common practice for the Master of shipwrecked vessel to acknowledge assistance by donating a significant relic to the persons who gave extraordinary aid in the crisis, as Mr Roadknight had done.Colour photograph of the Swan Reach school bell, showing the imprint Netherby 1858 shows teacher Lyn Wilkinson. Melbourne Legacy
Book, Aussie, 1920
Aussie, a lighthearted account of life in the field for Australian troops during WW1. Featuring stories, cartoons, letters to the editor and much more. Aussie was conceived in November 1914 but it was not until January 18, 1918 that Aussie was first published with a print run of 10,000 copies. The third issue had a print run of 100,000 copies. A couple of single original issues are also in the archive. This was a compilation put together by Phillip Harris from the original editions and printed in Australia in 1920. Funds raised from the sale of the compilation went towards the construction of The Australian War Memorial.Despite the dreadful conditions on the Western Front during the war the Australian troops managed to procure enough rescoures to publish an interesting and humour packed account of life for them as it was. A great morale booster.Cover, cardboard, faded and some stains. Pages, paper, some tears, stains, discolouration.Front cover, "Aussie. A reprint of all the numbers of the Diggers' own paper of the battlefield, wholly written, illustrated and printed in the field by members of the AIF. Produced by the editor, Phillip L. Melbourne Legacy
Audio - Recording, tape, Legacy House, by Legatee Grat Grattan
The tape has not been played from the label it is Legatee Grat Grattan talking about Legacy House. Legatee Grattan was very important member of Legacy for many years. He was well placed to tell the story of the donation towards Dureau House as L/ Grattan was pivotal in it's story. BG Corporation of New York used 'Brown and Dureau' as agents in Melbourne for their spark plug manufacturing (for the American aircraft based in Australia during the war). A royalty of two shillings and sixpence was agreed. The entrepreneur President of BG Corporation was Richard Goldsmith. L/ Grat Grattan had a friend Mr Edwards who was managing director at Brown and Dureau and heard of the desire by Goldsmith to leave a permanent memorial to ex-servicemen in Australia (Children's Hospital was considered). Grat took Edwards to Market St and showed him the inadequacy of the building. It was agreed if Melbourne Legacy could come up with a purchased building in 10 days they would get the money needed. The property purchased was 'Storey Hall' in Swanston St (also called Hibernian Hall in other documents). After the war it turned out not to be suitable and a new building was required. Contents TBC 'Perhaps his most lasting monument is Melbourne Legacy House. Through his friendship with one of the principals of the firm, Brown and Dureau, Legacy was given a donation of 30,000 pounds in 1944. A condition of the donation was that Legacy had only eight days in which to buy a building. A building across the road from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology was bought for 18,000 pounds and the balance invested. The building was sold in the early '50s and the proceeds plus the invested money enabled Legacy to buy its headquarters, Dureau House, in Swanston Street in 1955."It may be confirmed when played but it is likely a significant recording of the history of the acquisition of Dureau House.Clear plastic cassette tape in a cardboard box.Cardboard box, rainbow, C20, Tape a letter. Cassette, side 1 - Legacy Week by Legatee Grat Grattan, 1, Rainbow, Tape a Letter. 10 minutes per side. side 2 - as above.legatee, grat grattan, dureau house -

Document, Letter written on part of a fabric wing 14 June 1917, 1917
A wartime letter written by Arthur Evans that was later mounted on card for display purposes. It was donated to Legacy in 1998. The letter was written on the fabric of an aircraft wing. The letter was written by Arthur Stanley Evans while convalescing in Briston in 1917. He had been injured at Bullecourt, France with the 18th-16th AIF. The letter says 'Dear Minnie, Just a line to say your nice long letter arrived yesterday and I am now waiting the money etc. Have run out of paper so am scrawling this on a piece of wing belonging to one of Fritz's tubes that I saw one of our chaps having a scrap with in the air over our lines one day. "Fritz LOST". Glad Betty liked her little gift. Will write you later. I am improving every day and expect to have leave shortly. Love to all, Arthur." Not to let war time shortages of paper get in Arthur Evans way, he improvised and his letter to Minnie, it arrived intact. The fabric would be quite durable and light. A great memento to show family and friends.Despite war time shortages a little ingenuity can overcome many difficulties.Backing, ply board. Letter and short story typed on white cardboard, cardboard fixed to ply backing. Original letter fixed to white cardboard. Lower left hand corner folded over showing the reverse side of the fabric. Original letter rectangular in shape. All of the above is surrounded by a brownish border. The letter, the story and how the letter came to Legacy is printed in brown ink. The original letter is hand written on a piece of wing fabric from a German aircraft shot down over Allied lines.souvenir, world war one -
