Port and Starboard channel markers are internationally recognised sea markers used in maritime pilotage to indicate the edge of a channel. This Port Phillip West Channel marker was built in 1955 and was run on acetylene, therefore requiring a platform and circular hut rather than the modern buoys or posts. The album was owned by Jack Grinton 1043, 38th Batt AIF. Part of the Grinton collection which included hundreds of negatives and developed photos that he took in England and France during WW1. Part of a collection of photographs owned by Dorris McLaughlin who was born in Greensborough, in 1899 to John McLaughlin and Rosalie Ellen Whatmough. This came from the butcher's/baker's cart on display at the Slab Hut (Orbost Visitor Information Centre). The cart came from Sederlan's Bakery and had been used outside the premises as advertising. The original chassis had been added to extensively with shafts, wheels and tyres added. This axle appears to have part of the cart - either a baker's or butcher's cart.An axle from a butcher's cart. This photograph was on display in the Orbost Information Centre - the Slab Hut - for many years. Originally the post office was not at Orbost at all but in the small settlement of Newmerella. The building in the photograph was completed and opened in 1898 at a cost of 1038/4/8 pounds. The post office building today is a replica of this building, opened in 2004 after a local campaign to retain a full post office in the town.The photograph of the early post office shows that it was a popular meeting place. This machine was given to Ada Healey as a child. Ada Healey was for 20 years a volunteer and organizer at the Orbost Slab Hut (Orbost Information Centre). She was known for her craft skills and was a particularly fine knitter. Ada was the only child of Tom & Queenie Warne, born in Bombala/Delrgate. She was married to Keith Healey. The Healey family were early settlers in Marlo.This is an example of a toy given as a "teaching" toy. It was used by its owner to practise sewing before graduating to an adult type machine.A small hand-operated sewing machine. The body of the sewing machine is painted black. The top arm appears to have been painted in a white/cream colour. The machine could have been used to make small articles. The initial Methodist Church at Long Gully was a slab hut and in 1855 the first brick building was erected. This was replaced in 1865 by a brick church designed by architects Vahland and Getzschmann. In 1877 the present church, designed by the same architects was built, with the 1865 building becoming the Sunday school. Black and white photo of St. John's Catholic Church, Mitcham erected in 1872. Two wings at rear give the church a cruciform shape were added in 1888. This building became decrepit gradually and prior to its demolition in the 1950's, the end walls of the crossings were supported with heavy 'flying shores'.
