Ballarat School of Mines Students' Magazine was a Students' Association magazine. The president was G.N. Hart and the 1964 editors were Kelvin Whitford and Armand Krastins. The cover was designed by Colin Jellet. Advertising was obtained by Jon McDonald and Peter Smith. Active collaborators were John Costa, Ken Delany, Roger Lonsdale, John Byrne and Bobby Ong Gim Sen. Harry Arblaster retired in 1964 as the Principal of the Ballarat School of Mines, and E.J. Barker was appointed in his place. The Vice-Principal was H.J. Albert VIctor Grinton No 5024 enlisted in the 21st reinforcements 13th Batt AIF on 21.1.16 age 18 years. When he got to England he transferred to the 38th Batt to be with his brother Jack. Embarked for France 22,11,1916, WIA 28.5.1917 SW Face, rejoin unit 19.6.1917, WIA 12.10.1917, rejoin unit 10.5.1918, promoted CPL 3.9.1918, hospital 14.9.1918 Nasal Obstruction, rejoin unit 3.10.1918, promoted Sgt 7.10.1918. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for actions near Clery on 31.8.18. John William Grinton enlisted in C Coy 38th Batt AIF on 3.2.16 age 23 years. Both became Sergeants and both were WIA twice. They came home together on the same boat. Part of the Grinton collection which included hundreds of negatives and developed photos taken by Jack during the War. This item is historically and socially significant because A E Bolger had enlisted at Frankston and is recorded as being the first Frankston soldier to die at Gallipoli. Bolger was wounded and killed during the landing at ANZAC cove on the 27th April 1915. This plaque and medallion was awarded to his family who have subsequently donated them to this collection.This circular, bronze commemorative plaque was presented to the family of Private Arthur Ernest Bolger, who was killed in action at Gallipoli on 27th April, 1915. The plaque is mounted on a wooden display stand with a 1914-15 star (another medal issued to Australian service personnel) and a label describing the item.
