Men’s waistcoats were once an essential part of men's outfits. Usually they had front panels made of decorative or luxury fabrics like wool, tweed or silk, or crisp white cotton for formal occasions. Backs usually were made of cheaper material such as cotton. Pockets at the front carried a fob watch, small change or train tickets. This example was hand made by a Yarraville resident. This shield belonged to Dr Ian 'Spud' MacLeod Murphy (1905 - 1981) and was presumably awarded to him when he was the cox of the winning Geelong College team in the Head of the River competitions (rowing regattas) in 1921 and 1922. He attended Geelong College 1919-1922 and later, Melbourne University (1929-1937). Dr Murphy retired to Emerald in 1947 intending to breed turkeys but instead responded to the community need for a GP. For the next 34 years, he was Emerald's GP working seven days a week without assistance and travelling all over the hills. He was awarded the British Empire Medal in 1977 for devotion to the health of the community. He died in 1981 at the age of 76 years and a Memorial Fund was set up in his name to provide support for local students studying Medicine.Dr Murphy was Emerald's first and much-loved GP. His work for the community over 34 years was of immense benefit to Emerald and surrounding districts. Medal to commemorate the silver Jubilee (25th anniversary) of the accession of King George V to the throne on 6 May 1910. The King George VI Coronation Medal was issued in 1937 to commemorate the coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. A total of 90,279 medals were struck and presented as personal souvenirs to government officials, military personnel, and Royal Household members throughout the Commonwealth. Of these, 6,887 were allocated to Australians. Purchased from an opportunity shop, this dress is a stage costume bearing the label of Bonn & Mackenzie, a prominent UK costume designer from the 1950s to the 1970s. The dress appears to have been worn by June Bronhill (1929-2005), a prominent Australian opera singer and actress, whose name is handwritten on the label. Born June Mary Gough, she began using the stage name of Bronhill in 1952 in honour of her NSW home town of Broken Hill as a form of thanks to the local community who had helped raise money to send her overseas for professional training as a singer. Bronhill trained in London and gained early exposure with the English National Opera. She went on to star in many theatrical productions in Australia and the UK. She moved back to Australia permanently in 1976, and in 1980 was cast in her first television role as Mrs Crawford in the Australian version of 'Are You Being Served?'.Full-length short-sleeved dress of white cotton, lace and nylon, featuring elaborately ruffled sleeves and vertical stripes of lace on the skirt and bodice. As a result of a group of European expatriates settling in Sunbury in the 1970s and wanting to play soccer, the Sunbury United Sporting Club was formed in 1972 with the first games played on the Aussies Rules ground in Evans Street (now the Sunbury Shopping Square). After cooperation between Shire of Bulla Council to acquire an open area of land in Michells Lane, the club moved to their own ground, Langama Park in 1975.
