Printed onto heavy paper/card. Facsimile (Reg Item 773) made from the item recovered from Horse Tram No. 1 in 1986. Gives details of the Acts under which the by-law was made. By Law made by the City of Ballaarat, dated 6th April 1889. Gazetted 5 April 1889. Signed by the Mayor, J. G. McDonald, two Councillors William Little and David Cooke, and Town Clerk Geo. Perry. Gives details for the Lydiard St, Drummond St North, Orphanage, Mount Please, Sebastopol and Gardens routes for Monday to Thursday, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays rosters listing run number, sign on/off, rostered hours, total, number of trips, rostered miles, garden miles total miles and average speed. Has passengers getting off on the "wrong side". All the passengers are well dressed, indicating attending a possible event. The tram has a roof advertisement for "The Argus" newspaper. Is the sign by the tram a "Safety Zone" sign? Provided by David Critchley - not to be reproduced without discussions with David. David's notes indicates c1926. Appears to be a very crowded tram with a man on the running board. Has St Peters Anglican Church in the background. On the tramway pole adjacent to the tram is a "One Way Traffic" and an "Olympics Rings" sign, indicating the photo could have been taken c1956, possibly during the Olympics themselves. Functional object - ESCO Tram Destination Symbol, Circa 1913
Tramcar Destination Sign used by the Electric Supply Company of Victoria on the Ballarat Electric Trams. The ESCo operated the Ballarat electric trams from 1905 to 1934. Tramcar destination symbols originated in a time when a large part of the population was illiterate. The symbols were displayed on the front of the tram enabling the public to easily identify a tram's destination. The destination signs had a painted circle in the middle, the colour indicated the tram's destination. This particular sign has a yellow circle indicating the destination was Lydiard Street North. See Reg No. 5488.Yields information about how the public related to the trams and their destinations.Square sheet of steel, painted dark green and with a painted yellow circle 125mm in diameter in the middle. Has two circular holes near one side with an extended slot for fastening over hooks or screw heads. Has at least two layers paint with slightly different shades; all layers of paint are flaking. The photo taken at the corner of Moorabool and Malop Streets is looking south along Moorabool St. Shows Geelong tram 4 with the destination of North, about to turn into Malop St with several passengers boarding the tram. In the background is a safety zone sign, the Solomons store, the T&G building, and many angle-parked motor cars. The T&G building is finished. The photo shows three trams at Hospital Corner, during the mid to late1950s. Tram 35 turns from Drummond Street South on its way to Lydiard St North. Another bogie tram is turning into Drummond St South while No. 25 waits at the tram stop. A conductor can be seen walking forward with a point bar. In the background is the sign for Rimmiington Bros Butchers and the Southern Cross Hotel. Photo shows Geelong tram 40 Mercer St, city end. The tram has the destination of North. In the background is a typewriter shop, R J Reynolds? Shell service station and S G Winkler Service station with a Neptune sign. The driver has his hand on the air brake and the controller with the front driver's window open. One of a set of photos was taken between 15/2/1956 and 3/3/1956 when services operated only between Belmont and North before the final closure of the Belmont route on 25/31956 and that bogie tram 31 is not shown on the board, having gone to Ballarat on 15/2/1956 - see item 5554.
