This notebook comes from the estates of the Misses Dorothy and Agnes Ardlie of Warrnambool. Dorothy Ardlie (1910-1993) and her sister Agnes Ardlie (1915-1993) were the daughters of Ethel and Arthur Ardlie of Warrnambool, the granddaughters of the prominent Warrnambool lawyer, William Ardlie and his wife Mary and the great granddaughters of John and Mary Ardlie, early Warrnambool settlers. The notebook has been used in 1954 as a visitors book and later as an address book and a notebook for recipes, messages etc. The significance of ‘A la Ronde’ or ‘In the Round’ on the opening page is not known. This notebook is of minor interest as a memento of the Misses Dorothy and Agnes Ardlie of Warrnambool (20th century)This is a small notebook with a light brown cover with an ornamental gold edging around the front cover. The cover is somewhat stained. The pages are gilt-edged and contain handwritten signatures, names and addresses and notes. Photograph is of the some memorabilia of Stawell Gift, taken on a visit by John Hayes to the Common School Museum to give a talk for the Rutherglen Historical Society. This cup, made in Melbourne, is a 1946 award for a table tennis competition in the Warrnambool district. The P.C.S.A. may stand for Presbyterian & Congregational Sports Association, with the trophy being won by the Congregational Church team. The donor’s initials, W.Y.M.C., may stand for Warrnambool Young Men’s Club. The Warrnambool Congregational Church was founded in 1862 with a church opened in Liebig Street in 1864. This church was sold and a new one opened in Henna Street in 1940. In 1979, after the Congregational Church merged with the Methodist Church, the Henna Street church was sold to the Salvation Army.This cup is of interest as an example of a Warrnambool sports trophy given over 70 years ago.This is a small silver cup mounted on a brown Bakelite base. Could this flag have flown at the 1956 Olympics on Lake Wendouree ??? Probably not because the current tricolour came into use in 1946. The flag would have been made during the reign of King Victor Emmanual III. These photographs were probably taken in the late 1940s - mid 1950s. 3275.1 was taken at the roundabout in Nicholson Street / Salisbury Street intersection looking south. On the right is the The Commonwealth Hotel and the Gippsland Northern Store can be seen on the right. The war memorial can be seen in the centre of the intersection. 3275.2 has been taken from a height (possibly from behind the hardware store) overlooking Orbost House in McLeod Street. The butter factory can be seen in the background. Back yard toilets and paling fences can be seen with a narrow lane for the sanitary truck. Mrs Ruth Hannah Macalister, 1861-1932, established “Orbost House” as a boarding house in about 1900. Following her demise “Orbost House” was taken over by her son, “Reg” and his wife and they continued the Macalister family‟s association until the accommodation house was purchased by “Slim” and Eileen Somerville and Lindsay and Joan Jensen, in partnership, in 1963. The Kew Light Opera Company was formed in 1952, and mounted a number of musical and variety productions each year until it was subsumed in the "Q" Theatre Guild in 1957. The order of service of the ceremony to dedicate the Shrine Forecourt by the Queen on 28 February 1954. It was the official commemorative document of the occasion. The Queen lit the Eternal Flame as part of the ceremony. The design of the Forecourt was part of a competition that was run to find a suitable memorial. The Forecourt is cross shaped. The Cenotaph is 65 feet high and rises as a focal point to the Forecourt, it is balanced on the other side by three 70 foot high flagstaffs. The sculpture at the top of the Centoph is "carved in Footscray basalt. It represents six men in battle dress of the Navy, Army and Air Services, carrying a bier on which lies the figure of a dead comrade draped with the national flag. Its simple symbolism harmonises with the great shrine itself and sums up with dramatic power the whole message of the monument - the debt of the living to the dead, the eternal bond between the fallen and those who enjoy the fruits of their sacrifice." Also from the souvenir booklet: "In front of the Cenotaph, surrounded by a protective railing, the Eternal Flame which burns continually in its great bronze bowl. The eternal flame is an ancient symbol signifying at times the continuing spirit of a city, at others the constancy of man to an ideal, and again as they symbol of continuing faith." On Wednesday 23 Jan 1946 British aircraft carriers HMS Indefatigable, HMS Implacable and HMS Glory escorted by destroyers HMS Tuscan and HMS Armada arrived in Melbourne. Indefatigable berthed at outer west Station Pier, Glory at inner east and Implacable at outer east. Linda Begg nee Clarke was the 4th daughter of Alfred Edward Clarke (1843-1913) and his wife Caroline Long (1844-1884), and sister of Alfred Rutter Clarke. Her father married Margaret Helen Gowan in 1886. Margaret was the daughter of John Denovan Gowan and the niece of Reverend Kerr Johnston and his wife Eliza Denovan Gowan. The family property, Heatherbrae, Neerim Road, Caulfield, held a picnic on Easter Monday 1909 (12 April). In August 1916 she was honorary secretary of the East Malvern Branch and organised a concert in aid of the St Peter Chapel funds: "A Grand Concert is being arranged by the East Malvern Branch of the Ladies' Harbour Lights Guild, in aid of the Building Fund of the new Seaman's Chapel on the Australian Wharf. The concert will take place in the St. John's Parish Hall, Finch-street, East Malvern, on Monday even in, 4th September. Admission will be 1/. and tickets can be obtained from the hon. sec., Miss Linda Clarke, Heather-Brae, Caulfield." (see Punch article) She was responsible for the Needlework: knitting was a way to support seafarers (see pattern books). Linda, aged 49, married John William Begg in April 1928. Given to former prisoners in Japanese camps in the former Dutch East Indies after liberation 1946. Dutch colonists suffered incarceration under the Japanese occupation of former Dutch East Indies. Post-war many returned to The Netherlands where they suffered from the cold.
