Bendigo Concert Orchestra played in 1944. Jean Boulton and Myrtle Robbins were early members with Ruth Weldon. Earlier there was a Railway institute Orchestra. The Orchestra met in various venues finally in St Mary's Hall where they began as the Bendigo Symphony Orchestra. Conductors remembered were Oscar Flight(?) Gwen Bowles, Max O'Loughlin. In 1869, the Warrnambool Meat Preserving Company commenced their business on the site, where it operated until 1875 when it was sold to the directors of the Warrnambool Woolen Mill Company. After being destroyed by fire in 1882 it wasn’t until 1910 that the Warrnambool Chamber of Commerce was approached by Marcus Saltau and Peter McGennan to invest in a new mill. The original directors were James Dickson, P J McGennan, Robert Swinton, M Saltau, and J W Younger. In 1955 the Warrnambool Woollen Mill formed a partnership with the Wangaratta Woollen Mills. Dunlop bought the mill in 1968. From that time until its closure in 2000 it had a number of different owners, the last being the Smith Family Industries. This report contains the financial reports for the three years from 1951-1953.This report shows records of the Woollen Mill which was one of the most important industries in Warrnambool for nearly 100 years. Grassmere is a small hamlet about 12 kilometres from Warrnambool. It is a farming area. The Grassmere Gold Mining Company, presumably established by local people in Grassmere, was created in 1898 for the purpose of acquiring from Messrs James and Mewha a lease of a Cassilis gold mine (23 acres). £5000 was to be raised in shares of five shillings and one shilling each. The Manager of the Company was Horatio Dickson of Melbourne and the brokers were McMeekin and Co. of Melbourne and Warrnambool and Dickson and Osborne of Melbourne. This reef mine was one of several in Cassilis, Gippsland, 12 kilometres north west of Swifts Creek. The gold-bearing quartz reefs were discovered in 1885 and worked to 1914. It is not known whether the Grassmere Cassilis mine was a financial success but the mining operations were impeded by the hardness of the stone in the area. William Robinson was a farmer in the Grasmere district. This receipt is of considerable interest as one of only three items the Warrnambool and District Historical Society has that is connected to the Grassmere Gold Mining Company. The gold mine establishment was one of the minor events in the district in the 1890s. This is a buff-coloured 1899 receipt for William Robinson who has paid six shillings and threepence for part payment of his shares in the Grassmere Gold Mining Company. The receipt has black printing and black-ink handwriting. There is one stamp of the Manager ‘H.S. Dickson’ and another of ‘Grassmere Gold Mining Company No Liability’. The receipt has several holes caused by silver fish damage. ‘March 11th 1899, Received from Mr Wm. These boots may have been made as a sample as they are a very small size and do not appear to have been worn. They come from the New Zealand International Exhibition held at Hagley Park, Christchurch from November 1906 to April 1907. This exhibition was the brainchild of the New Zealand Prime Minister, Richard Seddon who died before the exhibition opened. Nearly 2 million people visited the exhibition at a time when the population of New Zealand was less than one million. The exhibition was thus rated a success even though there was a financial loss. No information has been found on the bootmakers, H. Perry & Co. In the 19th and early 20th centuries boots were an essential item for women who often had to walk through unmade streets and muddy paddocks. This item is of interest as it is a memento of an important New Zealand Exhibition early in the 20th century. This is a pair of a lady’s light brown leather boots. The boots have long leather tongues with 16 eyelets either side to lace up the front instep. The laces are missing. The wooden heels are slightly raised. H. Perry & Co. This is the second edition of the book. Benjamin Boyd 1796 - 1851) was a Scottish-born Australian pioneer and entrepreneur, and briefly, a politician. He arrived in Hobson's Bay, Port Phillip District, on his schooner, the Wanderer, on 15 June 1842, and reached Port Jackson, Sydney, on 18 July 1842. He was a shipping magnate, merchant, banker, pastoralist and station owner, Member of the Legislative Council, town planner and a whaler Boyd became one of the largest landholders and graziers of the colony of New South Wales; before suffering financial difficulties and becoming bankrupt. Boyd briefly tried his luck on the Californian goldfields before being purportedly murdered on Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands. Many of his business ventures involved blackbirding, the practice of coercing and kidnapping South Sea Islanders as slave labourers. The University of Ballarat inherited the Camp Street Arts Precinct. As the functions of the former public buildings were moved elsewhere, the Victorian Government of the time recognised the importance of maintaining the heritage buildings and the opportunity to create a cultural precinct extending from the Art Gallery. The 19th century architecture along Lydiard Street and the dogleg bend of Camp Street define the precinct. With substantial financial assistance from both State and Commonwealth Governments, the Art Gallery Ballarat has been extended through to include the 1884 Police Station on Camp Street. The Post Office building (1864-1887) was acquired for the University. The 1904 and 1941 Courthouses and the c1900 Public Library building were also included. Two new buildings have been constructed. There is a decorative pattern in green on the left margin with the address of the company and the name of the printer. ‘This is to certify that Wm. Robinson of Grassmere is a member of the above-named company and the proprietor of fifty (50) shares, numbering 12651/12700 therein, upon which the sum of one shilling has been paid up, subject to the Rules and Regulations of the Company. This photograph shows a small timber house in Wooragee. In 1855, the Ovens district made a shift towards farming development that included the sales of land in the Wooragee Valley. This shift came because of miner's demands and concern about stabilising the area around the goldfield. Continual migration needed to be supported, unlucky diggers needed alternative employment, and there was a lack of affordable fresh produce available on the goldfields. Initially, the cost of land in areas like Wooragee was prohibitive, and miners chose to squat rather than overpay for poor land. Throughout the 1850s and 1860s, land reform was a key topic for miners and politicians, as they attempted to improve land access and protect financial interests. This photograph is an example of rural development in the Wooragee area, showing the cottage, tents, and garden beds. While the date is unknown, the image nevertheless links us to the 1850s-1860s story of rural development in Indigo Shire. These documents concern the property in South Warrnambool, Jetty Allotment 7, Section 4. They include a search made of the title of this property in 1937 and information on later purchasers of the property. The first owner of this property was James Cust who purchased it in April 1853. James Cust (1815-1860) came from Ireland to Australia in 1841. From 1847 on he farmed first at Woodford and then moved into Warrnambool and began land speculating.. In 1856 his property was valued at £20,000 but by 1858 he was declared insolvent following the insolvency of his financial backer, William Bateman and his properties were sold. He died in 1860 following an accident at a Ballarat gold mine. Other notable Warrnambool identities who owned this property on Pertobe Road included Thomas King, Christopher Beattie, Thomas Goodall, William McMahon and Alan Lane.These documents are of interest as they detail the history of a property in Warrnambool up to the 1960s. They are also an example of the type of property once owned by James Cust, an important early land speculator in Warrnambool. These are nine loose sheets of paper concerning a legal search made of a block of land in Warrnambool and later documents on the same property The papers contain handwriting in blue and black ink and pencil and one red stamp. THis collection of cuttings relates to the Warrnambool Steam Packet Company.The Warrnambool Steam Packet Company was established in 1868 when capital was raised with 2000 shares at a value of five pounds each.It was established to provide passenger, accommodation and a large stock and freight service between Warrnambool and Melbourne.. At the time Stephen Henty was operating three steamers along the coast and at the prospect of losing his Warrnambool trade with the establishment of the new Warrnambool company, he sold one of his steamers , the Edina in March 1868. The first five directors elected were F P Stevens, J G Crammond, WW Jamieson, R B Paterson and George Wood. Fares were from one to three pounds and freight was 17 shillings per ton.The steamers connected with coaches from the north of Warrnambool as far as Hamilton. The cuttings record the financial position of the company for the first ten years. This collection of cuttings is valuable as a research item as it documents the development and operation as well as many of the stake holders in one of Warrnambool's earliest shipping companies. The cuttings are from a range of papers including The Warrnambool, Examiner, The Warrnambool Advertiser and the Argus.Ledger book with blue pages which is lacking the cover. Moira Bird Oliver (nee Good) daughter of Rev Good of St Jude's Carlton first met Frank Oliver circa 1915. They were engaged for some 7 years while Frank did wartime service and then on return to Melbourne completed a Theology degree at Trinity College and was then ordained. They married on the 18th of July 1925 at St Jude's Church in Carlton. Frank Oliver was then naval chaplain on the HMAS Platypus. After various postings the married couple eventually arrived and were appointed to the Chaplaincy to the Mission to Seamen based at 717 Flinders St from 1930-1960. The Olivers weathered many significant issues between 1930 and 1960, a depression, WW2, strikes and waterfront unrest in the 1950s and financial struggles resulting from changed shipping patterns. This photograph was gifted by a descendant who told us that Mrs Oliver was a very enthusiastic photographer. Mrs Oliver was a well loved and respected woman and is memorialised by a window in the Mission Chapel. It is possible she is one of the many anonymous photographers who contributed various photographs especially of the 1930s and forties that make up a substantial part of the Mission Heritage Collection. The University of Ballarat (later Federation University_ inherited the Camp Street Arts Precinct. As the functions of the former public buildings were moved elsewhere, the Victorian Government of the time recognised the importance of maintaining the heritage buildings and the opportunity to create a cultural precinct extending from the Art Gallery. The 19th century architecture along Lydiard Street and the dogleg bend of Camp Street define the precinct. With substantial financial assistance from both State and Commonwealth Governments, the Art Gallery Ballarat has been extended through to include the 1884 Police Station on Camp Street. The Post Office building (1864-1887) was acquired for the University. The 1904 and 1941 Courthouses and the c1900 Public Library building were also included. Two new buildings have been constructed.
