In the early 1990s extensive work work was done to the outdoor areas of the Bulla Primary School, which included a school garden and modern playground equipment. The photograph shows three pieces of the equipment installed in the playground, namely a slide, a climbing frame and balancing equipment. The improvements to the outdoor area at Bulla Primary School gave the students a wider range of extra-curricular activities. David Miller (Dave) Mair (1879-1938) married Lily Vipond Deakin (1890-1945) in 1910. They had 5 children: Geoffrey David (1913-1970), Beryl (1916-1976), Gwynneth (1917-1997), Isabel Lillian (1921-1997) and Shirley Inez (1928-1968). His parents were Isabella Brown (1856-1944) and William Mair (1850-1924). Personal communication from Laurie Newton, Beryl's daughter: Dave and Beryl initially lived in East Melbourne after they married. Geoffrey, Beryl and Gwynneth were born in East Melbourne. They subsequently moved to Louise Avenue, Mont Albert and Isabel may have been born while they were there. Later they purchased 20 Barton Street, Mont Albert. Shirley was born after they moved to Barton Street. The children attended Mont Albert Central School. Dave was an extremely keen sportsman (particularly bowls and cricket). He started the Kangaroo Cricket Club and worked for the Melbourne Cricket Club.This is part of a large donation related to the Deakin, Mair and Young families with connections to the Surrey Hills / Mont Albert area.A sepia coloured post card photo of (?) a studio portrait with a cream border of 2 children sitting on a couch. Date is approximate. Donor is the widow of Thomas Hall. Biographical notes provided: Thomas was born in Melbourne on 14/9/1928 and lived at Olinda until c1932 when his family moved to 10 Pembroke Street, Surrey Hills. He attended Surrey Hills State School, then went on to Box Hill High School (and / or Technical School - both are mentioned). He bought a horse and cart in order to be able to make deliveries for trades people and hence pay his way through technical school. He attended technical school 3 evenings per week studying building, carpentry, plumbing, electrical work and bricklaying. He built many homes in the eastern suburbs. He played tennis and attended church at Church of Christ. Married Margaret on 2/4/1955. Retired to Dromana where he was a member of the garden club at Redhill. The group, members of the Kallinikos family, is on board a ship, possibly farewelling a relative who is departing Melbourne for a return visit to Ithaca. A few Ithacans travelled back home during the 1940s and 1950s, and overtime more families made the long 30 day boat trip to Greece. The advent of air travel travel made it easier for people to travel back home regularly and today those Australian born of Ithacan descent regularly visit the island.A black and white photograph taken on the deck of a ship while it is in port. About the author: Born in Melbourne, David Crotty has worked in museums since 1984. He has a long-standing interest in aviation history and has worked as a curator with the Australian War Memorial and the RAAF Museum. He is currently (2010) a curator in the History and Technology Department of Museum Victoria. Story of John Robertson Duigan and his flying creer, from his early years as a Melbourne school boy to his heroic activities as a pilot on the Western Front in World War One. Gillies Pies was started by three brothers from Charlton, in central Victoria, Les, Alan and Norm Gillies who left their farm after the 1940s drought and headed to Bendigo to start anew. From their first small bakery in Mitchell Street, the brothers eventually went on to employ about 200 people with wholesale and retail locations spreading across the state and distribution including Melbourne.A double-sided sign, both sides are identical. Frederick de Kock first advertised as a teacher of French situated in Mr N Caire's photographic Studio, View Place. In 1882 he began teaching hand painting on ceramics. In 1883 he advertised as a photographer with his own studio on the corner of Mitchell and King Street, which was later named the Bendigo Portrait rooms. In December 1887 Mrs De Kock sold all her goods prior to a move to Sydney. In 1888 Frederick advertised as a representative of the Enlargement Company who was visiting Bendigo to take orders. This information suggests that this photograph was taken between 1883 and 1887.Sepia family photograph of three girls and one boy, date and family name unknown. Children in photo identified as John Colin Reaburn, also known as Jack, and his young brother, Wallace James Reaburn. The Reaburn family came to Surrey Hills in the 1890's and first lived in Russell Street. John Colin Reaburn (B 1899 in Russell St, Surrey Hills; D 1987, Box Hill) and Wallace James Reaburn (B 1910; D 1996) were the children of John Reaburn (1873-1963) and his wife Jane (Jeannie) Nelson Harkins (1875-1959). They has a sister Winifred Jean Reaburn (1904-1983). The family later lived in Union Road on the SW corner of Guildford Road. The house was called 'Fairbank'. John completed his education to eighth grade of Surrey Hills State School, going on to University High School and became an accountant. He later moved away from the area but when the collection of local history commenced in the 1970's, John was living near Belmore Road and became involved. He had a clear recall of early days and played a valuable part in recording details of early Surrey Hills.B/W photo (photo dark) of two young children. Right hand building built by William Williams as a saddlery c. 1910. Arundell's Shoe Shop formerly ANA Boot and Shoe Shop established by John Arundell in 1901. The shop was sold by Vic Arundell in 1980 and closed. Next door was John Watson's Stock & Station Agents which later became Dalgety's. The end shop was the saddlery and then Bullock's grocery 1930's to 1970's. In 1957 became Charlton's first self service store. Became Australian Estates late 1970s. The shops were later demolished to make way for the Traveller's Rest.
