The carrying and storage business was located in Railway Place, near where the Discovery Centre is today. Thomas Gerard Jeffrey was a principal of the company until it was sold in 1973. This picture shows a group of people outside of a weatherboard house. There are four persons sitting on a metal seat. Two male and two female. Both boys have a boat neck collar on their shirts and button up boots on. One girl has a light coloured dress with a money purse across one shoulder, her hair tied up with a ribbon. The older girl has white uniform on with watch hanging from the bolice, her hair is up. A youth is standing leaning on the house with his thumbs in his vest holding a whip. He has on foot resting on the seat and is wearing short pants and boots. Standing behind the seat is a large framed women wearing a dress with her hair up and a man wearing a suit with facial hair, hands behind his back. To the side another youth with his hands in his pants. Next to him another man with his hands behind his back, dressed in a suit with facial hair. Document - APPRENTICESHIP INDENTURE BETWEEN THOMAS ORR AND CHARLES STONEMAN
Apprenticeship Indenture made on the second of February 1878 between Thomas William Orr and Charles Stoneman commencing 20 July 1878 for the terms of five years ending 19 July 1883. Indenture between 'James Orr, father of Thomas William Orr ( now employed as a blacksmith with Mr. Charles Litchfield Stoneman, Coach Builder) of Sandhurst. The said James Orr (father) agrees to allow his son Thomas Orr (unclear) to ecome an apprentice to the said Charles Litchfield Stoneman to the trade or business of a blacksmith.' Pinned to front of indenture is a newspaper article, no date, re the conditions for apprentices 'have certainly changed in the last 60 odd years' and details the conditions of a coachbuilder apprenticeship in 1889. 'Taverns , inns, or alehouses he shall not haunt' and 'matrimony he shall not contract' are some of the terms of apprenticeship. Bert Vivian (1893-1974) was a second generation Portland saddler. His father William had operated a saddlery in Rosebery in the Victorian Mallee before relocating to Portland in the late 19th century. Bert began work as a saddler at W. H. Vivian, at 58-60 Percy Street Portland, continuing in the business after his father’s death in 1928. Donor is daughter of a member of Australian armed forces who served during WW2, and was member of garrison at Camp 13 after the war, in 1946. Donor was researching her father's service & obtained at her expense copies of these archives held by the AWM, related to daily activities in the camp during the time that her father was posted at Murchison. Records show, amongst other things, troop (garrison) movements, routine orders, outcomes of disciplinary proceedings.
