"Victoria the Golden" documents life in Victoria between 1850 and 1862 as viewed by artist William Strutt. Momentous events in the Colony’s history such as Separation Day (1 July 1851), the sitting of the first Legislative Council (13 November 1851), the death of Burke (June 1861) and the Black Thursday bushfires (6 February 1851) are depicted. In 1907 the Premier of Victoria Thomas Bent purchased "Victoria the Golden" from Strutt for £120 and presented it to the Library. The album depicts events in chronological order with what Strutt considered “fidelity to nature and accuracy”, so that present day Victorians may view the sketches “as records of what we may now look upon as the dim past in the rapidly progressive history of Victoria”. Victoria the Golden is celebrated as one of the Parliament’s great treasures. It is a testament to William Strutt’s skill as a draughtsman and contains over 100 assorted images which were executed between the years of 1850-1862. Strutt’s particular talent was to be able to step back and record each event with particular care to detail. Many of the pieces contained within this album are littered with notes, such as the correct resting position of a corporal’s sword or details about the cloth and cut of a subject’s jacket. Strutt also notes in one of his many sketches of the new Legislative Council chamber at Spring Street that the President, Sir James Palmer, is seated ‘a little too high’ (page 30). Throughout the album, Strutt’s illustrations bring to life the diverse nature and peoples of the new colony. His range of subjects is comprehensive and includes parliamentarians, lawyers, wives and daughters, merchants, labourers, police and military officers, indigenous communities, farmers, miners, prisoners and explorers. The everyday and the extraordinary are depicted with each turn of the page. 44 leaves heavy card, approximately 1mm thick. Sketches, watercolours and prints of varying sizes and papers are glued onto the pages. Full leather binding in blue leather with title and decorative border in gold. There are four raised bands on the spine, with gold decoration on the bands and at the head and tail of the spine. Marbled end papers and flyleaves. Gold on the edges of the book block. Card pages have a sheet of mottled blue paper on recto. Album leaf connection is a guarded system with stiff stubs and cloth hinges. Each page has a sheet of glassine paper attached at the binding edge to protect the images. Many pages stamped with "Parliament of Victoria" verso. Wooden, slotted handle racquet with a 14 1/2 inch head. Handwritten inscription across side of racquet head on obverse: LOUIS A. RENFROW. Surname also written across outside of head. Inscription across neck of obverse: HARRY C. LEE & CO/NEW YORK. Company logo 'LEE' on neck of reverse, and stamped on leather butt cap. Butt cap has a red and gold sticker adhered over it, advertising a St.Louis sproting company which originally strung racquet. Manufacturing and patent information along the sides of the handle, with the numbers '500', 'FS78' and '14 1/2' punched in. Materials: Wood, Gut, Leather, Metal, Ink, Glue, Lacquertennis

Built as a toy, either by a well resourced home workshop or by a toy maker. Have been well used or loved with missing wheels and damaged roof. Possibly dates from the early 1900s. St Kilda was a popular destination for Melbourne cable trams. Demonstrates a toy cable tram set.Cable tram set made from wood and pressed metal. Grip car or dummy has remnants of paint (green and gold) on the sides, holes for wheels on the two wood blocks on the underside. Has an eye hook at one end and a hole for another at the other end. Seat made from timber with a steel wire or rod to represent a grip lever. Metal secured to wood base with nails. Has four metal Staunchions on either side. Trailer similar construction with sides stamped or cut from sheet steel with holes at either end for a eye or hook and wheels. Roof on both items has been pressed and assembled. Photographic album containing 39 Colour postcards of Melbourne trams. The album consists of 30 leaves of dark grey heavy paper with three creases on left hand side of sheet, bound into a heavy bluey grey folder, embossed in gold 'Scrap Book" and bound with bluey grey string with two holes. The cover has been embossed with a the blue grey in swirls. Inside of back cover is a white label, "A New Star Product", with a please ask for No. with "425" stamped on. Postcards have been glued into the album. Entries have been kept to a single line - cards are able to be dated from buildings, whether the trams have marker lights, types of motor cars and general Melbourne history. Colour photograph of Ballarat No. 18, painted in Gold for the Centenary of the discovery of Gold in Sebastopol in 1864 at the Lydiard St. North terminus during 1964. Tram has destination of 'Sebastopol', head lights and marker lights turned ready for departure from the terminus. Sides painted in Gold, with white around windows and roof, and lettering in red paint. TMSV photograph. On Agfa paper. Shows buildings along the north side of Sturt St. and the building at the SE corner of Doveton St. ESCo tram has destination board on the front dash of the tram.Yields information about the appearance of Sturt St soon after the opening of the electric tram service in Ballarat.Printed colour postcard of an ESCo tram near the intersection of Doveton St. and Sturt St. travelling west along the south side of Sturt Street. Titled "Sturt Street, Ballarat" in the top left-hand corner and overprinted, embossed in gold, with the words "Christmas Greetings". On the rear of the postcard is a letter to Miss Hancock, Pitt St. Rockdale NSW, from a W.H. Nicholls. Message in pencil, address in ink. Postcard made by "WTP" Has a "Victoria One Penny" stamp. Does not appear to have been cancelled. Assumed used in 1905. On the rear of the second copy is a note to Miss Gibbs of Mole Creek Tasmania, dated 22/12/1907, sent from South Melbourne. See Reg.
