Probably soldiers of 8th Light Horse Regiment The 8th Light Horse Regiment AIF was raised at Broadmeadows Victoria in September 1914 under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Alexander White and formed part of the 3rd Light Horse Brigade. The regiment served at Gallipoli where in a courageous but ill-fated charge at the Nek on 7 August 1915 it suffered horrendous casualties including Lieutenant Colonel White. Rebuilt in Egypt under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Leslie Maygar VC the regiment went on the serve throughout the Middle East Campaign. Colonel Maygar died of wounds at Beersheba when the regiment was attacked by enemy aircraft while waiting to follow up the successful charge of the 4th LH Brigade on 30 October 1917. The 8th Light Horse AIF was disbanded in 1919, but soon after re-raised as the 8th (Indi) Light Horse in the Citizen Military Forces, superseding 16th (Indi) Light Horse. It had its headquarters at Benalla with sub-units throughout the Upper Murray and Northeast Victoria. In December 1941, the regiment converted from horse to mechanised, initially as 8th Reconnaissance Battalion then in July 1942 it became 8th Cavalry Regiment and served in Northern Territory. As Japanese threat to the mainland declined the regiment was disbanded.Black and white photograph of 8 soldiers seated in front of a bell tent and horse lines at Broadmeadows Camp 1915. Uniform - Jodhpurs
This style of trouser was worn by light horse soldiers. The jodhpurs were adapted from an ancient style of Indian trouser called the Churidar, which is tight around the calf and loose at the hips. It was adopted by British troops serving in India during the 18th century especially for sport. A British version was soon being produced by Savile Row tailors in London. The use of the Indian-style, ankle-length Jodhpurs allowed riders to use short, less expensive boots, as their calves were protected by the reinforced design and snug fit.Pair of Jodhpurs of the type most recently worn by 8/13 Victorian Mounted Rifles Light Horse Heritage Troop.jodhpur, uniform, light horse -

Tool - Seed Drill, Mitchell, 1922
One of a number of harvesting and cultivating machines made by Mitchell and Co during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the 1922 seed drill comprises wooden seed and fertilizer boxes, a release lever and caste-iron rear seat. The seed drill was pulled by a horse and operated with a plough attachment placed at the front to cut the soil. A seated operator used the lever to release seed and fertiliser onto the ground. The seed drill enabled seed to be planted at a constant depth and spacing. White press wheels at the rear of the seed drill would lightly compact soil and cover the seed.Horse drawn seeder faded red with white wheels suitable for large seeds eg. corn, beans, peas.churchill island, farm machinery, planting, seed drill, horse drawn, mitchell brand -

Lloyd Lindsay Competition In 1873 Colonel Loyd Lindsay introduced a prize for mounted riflemen. The initial experimental competition was a great success and it was for many years a feature of the various shooting programs. The conditions in 1873 required that sections of four mounted men were to ride about three quarters of a mile, taking two flights of hurdles in the course, and were, while dismounted and their horses either linked or held by alternate files, each to fire five shots at 200 yards standing, and the same number at 400 yards in any position. There was a time limit of twelve minutes, and the rifle, of any Government pattern, had to be carried on the back or slung to the saddle. 13TH GIPPSLAND LIGHT HORSE HANDSOME TROPHIES ON VIEW Thery are on view in the window of Mr. A. The Victorian Mounted Rifles was raised as the mounted arm of the Victorian Colonial defence force in 1885. It was under the command of Colonel Thomas Caradoc Rose (Tom) Price (1842-1911). Price was born in Tasmania, educated in Hobart Town and at Scotch College, Melbourne, before entering the East India Military College, Addiscombe, England. He was commissioned on 7 July 1861 in the Madras Infantry and began twenty years’ service in India with several regiments, retiring in April 1883. On his return to Victoria he was tasked with raising of a force of one thousand, to be known as the Victorian Mounted Rifles, and appointed a lieutenant-colonel in the Permanent Military Forces. Companies of the Victorian Mounted Rifles were raised in rural districts throughout Victoria. The soldiers were paid a small annual allowance and were required to provide their own horse. Many members served in contingent to the Boer War. After Federation the VMR was gathered up into the Australian Light Horse. Typed draft of a letter from Lieutenant Robert Morrison ' A ' Squadron 8/13 Victorian Mounted Rifles to Major M. Parker, Director Royal Tournament Committee, Horse Guards, London exploring the possibility of a team from 8/13 Heritage Troop competing at the Royal Tournament in 1986. He suggests horses might be provided by affiliated regiment 14/20 Hussars as they did in 1891. -
