Between 1915 and 1951, military topographical mapping in SA was conducted by Royal Australian Survey Corps (RASvy) units based outside the state. In February 1952, Army HQ Field Survey Section (Central Command Detachment) was established in Adelaide in a drill hall at Largs Bay. It was tasked with providing map coverage in the Woomera and Southern areas of the state. The section was subsequently reorganised as Central Command Field Survey Section moving firstly to Hampstead Barracks, Hampstead in 1953 and then into accommodation at Keswick Barracks in 1954. In 1957 the Section commenced mapping operations in the NT. The Unit was relocated to the old cavalry stables in 1961 and was redesignated Central Command Survey Unit and remained there till 1973. In 1970 the Unit was redesignated 4 Fd Svy Sqn and engaged in operations conducted in PNG from 1972 to 1974 inclusive. In 1973 the Squadron moved into a brand new two-storey specially designed and purpose built building adjacent to the old building. The old building then became the Squadron Q and Map store with an interconnecting lobby to the new building. Since 1975 the Unit was involved in the 1:50,000 Mapping Programme in WA, NT, QLD, SA and conducted many other operations within Australia and overseas. Post disbandment of the Corps the old Squadron building (cavalry stables) now houses the Army Museum of South Australia (AMOSA). The Royal Australian Survey Corps was amalgimated into the Royal Australian Engineer Corps in July 1996. In the lead up to this amalgamation, 4 Field Survey Squadron Keswick Barracks, Adelaide, South Australia was disbanded in 1995. A closing Ceremony was held on 25 November 1995 at 4 Fd Svy Sqn Keswick Barracks attended by about 208 former members of the Unit. A photo was taken of attendees at that event on the day and a list was prepared of attendees. These labels come from the pharmacy business of R.F.Kennedy who sold Lectar Company products and used a lighthouse image as his logo. Richard Kennedy (1826-1903), a wholesale, retail and manufacturing chemist in Timor Street, came to Warrnambool in 1880 and had what was described in the ‘Cyclopedia of Victoria’ as ‘the largest and best-appointed pharmacy in Victoria’. Kennedy was the Vice-President of the Pharmaceutical Society of Victoria, on the Pharmacy Board and was prominent in community affairs n Warrnambool. He also made local perfumes with many varieties named after people or events of the time – Nellie Melba, Federation etc. His pharmacy building in Timor Street and his house in Canterbury Road (“Ivanhoe”) still stand today.These labels are of some interest as they are associated with the Warrnambool business of the chemist, R.F.Kennedy. These pipes came from the Warrnambool firm of Peter Hand Tobacco Company Pty Ltd and were typical of the pipes sold by that firm. The Peter Hand Tobacco Company commenced in 1958 and was a wholesale distributor of tobacco and cigarettes throughout the Western District until early in the 21st century when tobacco smoking was no longer a widespread habit in any community in Australia. The retail shop was at 97 Liebig Street Warrnambool. These pipes are of interest as they came from the Peter Hand Tobacco Company, a prominent business in Warrnambool for 50 years. They are also a memento of the times when pipe-smoking amongst men was prevalent. These are briar pipes with black Bakelite mouth pieces. This is a document requesting a donation for the Fortuna Pipes and Drums for the update of some of their equipment. The members of the band are shown and named in the accompanying photo. Information about the Fortuna Pipes and Drums is also in Valerie Loyejoy's book " Mapmakers of Fortuna, A History of the Army Survey Regiment" ISBN 0-646-42120-4 and included in the Victorian Collection as item 6000. The Band was originally formed in 1993 from members of the local Masonic Lodge and first played for the Survey Corps Day Parade in 1994 after a request from the then RSM WO1 Phil Meagher. The Army was able to provide the original "Black Watch" tartan kilts. Using an original Survey Corps Badge c. 1915 provided by former WO1 Keith "Aki" Barber, a number of replica metal Survey Corps theodolite badges were struck and used along with the purple Survey Corps lanyard by the band. On Tuesday, 4 October 1904, the first serious railway accident occurred on the Colac-Beech Forest line near Beech Forest. As no train was scheduled that day in the afternoon the crew decided to fetch some wood from down the line. They fired the boiler on locomotive 3A, attached two trucks to the locomotive and moved out of the station. When they arrived opposite the Ditchley Park Hotel they stopped the engine and adjourned to the bar for some refreshments before beginning work. While they were engaged some local children boarded the unattended engine, started it, panicked when it began moving and jumped out leaving in to speed away and tip on a curve in a cutting at Ditchley. The engine was severely damaged. However, its cause remained an Otways secret.
