Marshall White is a former Merri-bek resident and artist. He completed a Fine Art diploma at the National Gallery Art School in 1973. After a severe motorcycle accident left him with quadriplegia in 1977, he returned to university, earning a Master in Painting from what is now the Victorian College of the Arts. White is considered a pioneer of digital art in Victoria. He taught art to inmates at Pentridge Prison, which provided him with access to early computers. Using a Commodore Amiga, Marshall pushed the boundaries of digital art. Strip 1 represents an early contribution to what was, at the time, an emergent art form. Inspired by William Blake and Arthur Boyd, White’s work delves into psychological spaces, addressing themes such as the apocalypse and White’s distain of religion. This is the programme of a musical production, ‘Half a Sixpence’ by the Warrnambool Holiday Actors. This company began in 1985 when a group of students from St Ann’s College and Christian Brothers College, Warrnambool (now merged to form the present day school, Emmanuel College), staged a musical production. The next year it was decided to extend membership to students across the district and membership today is still restricted to school students and young people. The Holiday Actors continue today with musical productions, mostly staged in school holidays. This programme is of interest as an example of the productions staged by the Warrnambool-based theatre company, Holiday Actors. This is a booklet of 20 pages, a programme for the musical ‘Half a Sixpence’. The front cover is yellow with images of a musical score, a sixpence cut in half and the Holiday Actors logo in red printing. The back cover has advertisements. This school exercise book contains mostly English Literature material produced by Ena O'Keefe at St. Ann's College, Warrnambool and dates from the 1920s. It seems to be about Year 10 standard. St. Ann's College began in 1872 as a Convent of Mercy School for Girls, changed its name to St. Ann's in 1888 and amalgamated with the Christian Brothers' College in 1990 to form the present-day Emmanuel College. No information is available on Ena O'Keefe but she may have come from the Winslow district. Mavis Washfold was a member of the Christian and Washfold families of Kew. A musician, she had a longstanding association with the Kew Philharmonic Society. The Society was founded by Dr. Ehrenfeld, c.1946, who was also the Orchestra's first conductor. He was succeeded by Harold Badger in 1954 following the death of the former. During the 1940s and 1950s, the Orchestra played its concerts in the Kew Recreation Hall in Wellington Street. As early as 1941, it was recognised that the people of Ballarat needed a Catholic boys technical school. When the Bishop of Ballarat, James O'Collins, established St Paul's College in 1948, he invited the Christian Brothers to continue their work through the provision of technical education. The 1884-1885 Directory was the first year of publication for the Middleton and Manning's Gippsland Directory. It was first published by Ale Middleton and Francis Beresford Manning. Beginning with advertisements from local businesses of the time, this is followed by a short gazetteer of places around the region, as well as general information on the districts of Gippsland. The main part of the Directory consisting of about 100 pages, is the Alphabetical Directory. Listed alphabetically by surname under each region, this lists heads of household (mostly male but there are a few females mentioned), together with their occupation and address.The list includes farmers, labourers, coach painters, dairywoman, teacher, saddler, brickmaker, merchant, laundress, hotel keeper, minister of religion, dressmaker, grocer, grazier, gasfitter, seedsman, coachbuilder, engineer, auctioneer, upholsterer, fowler, journalist, surveyor, musician, traveller, watchmaker, solicitor, restaurant keeper, blacksmith and miner. The St John Ambulance Association, which was founded in 1877 in England. Its first uniformed first-aiders were founded in 1887 as the St John Ambulance Brigade. These two have since been merged into a single association. St John Ambulance now have over 40 national organisations, many of which are affiliated with Johanniter International, and over 300,000 volunteers worldwide. The Order of St John owns the brand name in most countries (with the notable exception of India, which has a St John Ambulance organisation that is unconnected to the international movement). Logos vary in different countries but always contain the eight-pointed white Maltese cross as the essential identifier. Like the Order, St John Ambulance associations accept members of all religions. Their geographic organisation differs from the Order, and they have to contend with the differing national laws, medical practices and cultures of countries. Joeli Bulu was one of the first missionaries to Fiji. Not a Christian when he grew up but was converted after listening to John Thomas in Tonga. The king of Tonga had just been converted to Christianity and asked for volunteers to go to Fiji as a missionary. His reception in Fiji was not welcoming, but he was such a tenacious chap and because he was likeable he became one of the most influential missionaries in the South Pacific. He was a rascal as a young man in Tonga and the meeting with John Thomas was the thing that changed his life. Very well regarded now in Fiji. His active period was the 1838 to 1870 - John Thomas came to Tonga in 1826. From Wikipedia: Joeli Bulu (Siaoeli Pulu) (around 1810-May 1877) became a Christian in 1833. He was one of a band of Tongan teachers who came to Fiji in 1838, and pioneered the work of the Christian Church in this group. He served the Church in Fiji for almost four decades. He came to Lakeba by canoe, and was appointed to help with the printing of catachisms and passages of Scripture. Lorimer Fison translated Bulu's oral account of hislife. This was edited by George Stringer Rowe and printed in England in 1871 with the title, "Joel Bulu: The Autobiography of a Native Minister in the South Seas". He served first at Lakeba and then at Rewa, and after that the station was closed because of the wars, at Viwa. John Hunt sent him to investigate the possibilities of establishing the work in Vanua Levu, and to that field he was later appointed. He was the first Pacific Islander to be placed alone in charge of a circuit - Ono, in 1848, and also the first to be ordained (1850) as a Native Assistant Missionary. After this he served at Nadi (Vaua Levu), Bua and Cakaudrove where he pioneered the work before any white missionaries were established there. Afterwards he was appointed to Bau. Cutting from a newspaper titled Bendigo - the way we were. Photo shows two horse drawn vehicles standing outside the Manchester Arms Hotel. Both are pulled by grey horses. The two horses in the front vehicle are wearing a white lacy sort of covering over their backs and rump with pompoms on the edge. The carriage has a bride and groom sitting in it. The second carriage has four horses harnessed to it. The building has M.U.I.O. Odd Fellows Hall above the veranda and also Manchester. The edge of the veranda has iron lace. Death notice in local newspaper - Ringwood Mail 18/6/1942, and separate report of Miss Thomas being hit by a car driven by R. Naylor while crossing Station Street, Ringwood.Winifred Elva, beloved second daughter of H.O. and A. Thomas of Alexander Road Ringwood, and much loved sister of Grace,Rhys (deceased), Horace, Cornish, Rita, Elma and Gwen (Mrs Ron Westmore). Miss Thomas was well known in the district and for some years in business in Main Street, Ringwood. She was associated with church work including superintendent of the kindergarten at the Methodist Sunday school and the Junior Christian Endeavor.

This plate came from St Ann’s School, Warrnambool. It was probably used in the boarding house section and may have been used for either soup or cereal. St Ann’s School opened in 1872 as St Mary’s Convent of Mercy School, Wyton, with the latter name being the name of the ex-John Ardlie house in which the school was initially established. There were eight foundation Sisters of Mercy. The name changed to St Ann’s Convent School in 1888 and in 1991 it amalgamated with the Warrnambool Christian Brothers College to form Emmanuel College.This plate is an interesting memento of St. Ann’s School in Warrnambool in the mid 20th century.This is a round china plate with a green and yellow band around the inner edge of the plate. There is also the emblem of the school with the name and motto. The plate has a dip or recess in the middle. Float passing by the stoned retainer wall of Our Lady Help of Christians near the corner of Henry Street and Main Road Eltham. The float included a bark hut encompasing the motorised vehicle towing a trailer representing pioneers with a banner reading "The true heroes our pioneers". People dressed in historical costume sit on the float. This same float also participated in the Centenary parade in 1971. Floats were generally organised by community groups. EDHS would be pleased to learn which group organised this float. St Mary's Catholic Church, cnr Main Road and Henry Street, Eltham was opened/blessed October 13, 1912. The wooden church was built to replace an earlier brick church also known as St Mary's (1865-1912), which had been situated on the main road near present day Wingrove Park. The church and land cost £1,400 (Evelyn Observer). The wooden church was destroyed by fire in 1961. A new modern architecture (1960s) style church was erected - Our Lady of Help Christians Church. This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book,"Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). The collection of over 500 images is held in partnership between Eltham District Historical Society and Yarra Plenty Regional Library (Eltham Library) and is now formally known as the 'The Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection.' The Methodist Girls' Comradeship was formed in 1918 with the first Branch being in Bondi, NSW. There were three sections: Junior Rays, 8 - 11 years; Senior Rays, 11 - 15 years and Comrades, 15 years and over. The aims of the MGC was to "challenge young people with the saving power of Jesus Christ and provide avenues of christian service" and "to provide for the spiritual, social, physical and educational welfare of the members". Born 7 November 1906. Graduated from Princeton University 1928 with a BA, and from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1932 with a Bachelor of Theology, From 1928 to 1929 he taught at the Forman Christian College in Lahore. In 1935 was minister in the Presbyterian Church in America, holding pastorates in New York City and Albany. In 1951 to 1958 clerk of the General Assembly of the PCUSA President National Council of Churches. General Secretary of the World Council of Churches 1966 to1972.
