Shell purses became popular in late Victorian times and were made to go into a pocket or a larger purse. Many were made from freshwater molluscs. This item has no known local provenance but is of interest as an example of a personal item used in late Victorian times and will be useful for display This is an oval-shaped purse with the outer case made from a shell which is opalescent with brown and cream mottled markings. The clasp is gold-coloured metal with an ornate catch and attachments. Inside there are three compartments made of blue cloth trimmed with cream paper. Embroidered silk, with a swirl type embroidered pattern. Wide, and deep square neckline. Back opening with nine metal hook and eye fasteners. Seven 16cm long bones encased in ribbon - three in the front, and two either side of the back opening. The wide square neckline is edged with 4.5cm wide fine lace - (two narrower pieces stitched together). Five .5cm wide tucks border the front and back neckline. The sheer embroidered tulle sleeves have a silk panel under arm. Shoulders and sleeve cuff are trimmed with a feature of artificial roses and leaves - roses 2.5cm diameter. A 17cm frill extends from the back opening, passing under the armhole, across the tucked border at the neckline to the back opening of the left side. This frill is also trimmed with the artificial roses at 10cm intervals. The bands of lace that trim the neckline also border this frill. Stiffened circular shaped shields are stitched under the armhole, and on the adjoining under arm of the sleeve. Pink chenille type tufts interspersed on embroidered silk overlay. The Fashion & Design collection of the Kew Historical Society includes examples of women’s, men’s, children’s and infants’ clothing from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Items in the collection were largely produced for, or purchased by women in Melbourne, and includes examples of outerwear, protective wear, nightwear, underwear and costume accessories. 1880s women's dress featured tightly fitting bodices with very narrow sleeves and high necklines, often trimmed at the wrists with white frills or lace. This bodice is stiffened by what is commonly referred to as natural whalebone, but is actually baleen, which was in use from the 18th century through to the Edwardian era. It was hand sewn in Warrnambool in the 1900's.The bodice is significant for demonstrating the use of historical whalebone, or technically baleen, for its stays.
