Photograph, Soldiers’ Memorial World War 1 in Main Street -- Different angle
Soldiers’ Memorial World War 1 with wreaths at base. The "Girl's Remembrance League" worked to raise money for the memorial to be built. Cost was 643.0.0 pounds. The memorial was unveiled on Saturday 10th Nov. 1923, by Archdeacon T.P. Bennett, (a respected pardre and old Stawell boy). Photo was copied from original donated by Mrs. L Matthew's whose mother Mrs. A. V. Cornish was a member of the Girls Remembrance League. Memorial was partly built by Robson & Grey, when partnership dissolved Mr. G.M. Robson completed the work. The Borough Council donated the land for the memorial.Black & white photograph of a World War 1. memorial. Photocopy of a Luther Collage assignment on visits to war memorials and an investigation of Frank Isaac White, a name on the Mitcham War Memorial. White served in Egypt and France,. Maps show the route of his journeys including a period in hospital in England. Information is given about soldiers living conditions and his role as a artillery man. He was killed in Belgium on 20th September 1917 and buried in the Menin Road South Cematery at Ypres. Found in a tobacco tin by David Gillespie in a house near the water tower. Not known who Goff Buchan was. Goff Buchan has now been identified. See comment below.Pencil written letter, one page on one side on yellowing lined paper and tobacco tin in which it was found. Tin contained at one time Happy Thoughts TobaccoLetter: "Palestine / 28 Feb 1918 / Alick / Your welcome card just arrived. Pleased to hear you are doing well. That's not a very appropriate card to send to a fellow out on this desert where he never sees a woman. But it caused some fun. Well Jack Old Boy, I am in hospital at present with a crook knee caused through that gentle sport called football, but will soon be out. I didn't get that parcel [Dougie?] sent. I would have liked to have got it too, but never mind, better luck next time. Well, remember me to all the boys. Edith Cavell trained in London and became head of nursing in Brussels. When WW1 broke out she tended wounded soldiers of both sides with equal devotion but she was charged by the germans with helping allied soldiers escape to neutral territory. This camera went ashore at Gallipoli on the first day of the invasion 25/04/1915.Metal silver Vest Pocket Kodak Camera. Rectangular box type with scissor pop out lens. Bellows made of leather During WW1 it was marketed as a camera suitable for soldiers due to size and portability, often referred to as "The soldiers camera". It has small shutter release button mounted above the lens plate and below the lens there is a slider for choice of apertures, It originally used A127 autographic roll film. Plaque - Bronze Plaque, Unknown
WW1 Historical significanceNext of Kin Plaque: 6310 Pte H. McGregor. The round bronze Memorial Plaque shows Britannia and a lion on the front and bears the inscription 'He died for freedom and honour'. The full name of the dead soldier is engraved on the right hand side of the plaque. No rank, unit or decorations are shown, befitting the equality of the sacrifice made by all casualties. The shape and appearance of the plaque earned it nicknames such as 'The Dead Man's Penny, and the 'Widows Penny'. Plaque is still in it's original envelope addressed to Mr A. McGregor.Gunner H.G. Removed from the school when the property was sold and donated to the Ringwood RSL.Wooden Honour listing the names of Past scholars of Ringwood Primary School who took part in the Great War. The centre panel headed Memoriam lists the names of the 12 pupil who died on service. There are 68 other names listed on the board. School 2997.Details of many of the soldiers listed on the board are recorded in the book " The Anzacs of Maroondah" published in November 2018.
