Lieutenant Colonel J.M. Allard was Commanding Officer of 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles 1959 - 1962. He had served with 2/4th Armoured Regiment in World War Two. In the post WWII Citizen Military Force, he was a squadron commander in 4/19 Prince of Wales's Light Horse before being promoted to command 8/13 Victorian Mounted Rifles. The 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles was raised as a regiment of the Royal Australian Armoured Corps on 1 May 1948 with Headquarters in Melbourne and squadrons in Sale, Benalla/Wangaratta and Albury. In 1955 Regimental Headquarters moved to Wangaratta and a second squadron was located at Albury. The Sale squadron transferred to 4th/19th Prince of Wales’s Light Horse. In 1977 8/13 VMR Regiment was reduced to an independent squadron A Squadron 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles and in 1991 was linked with 4th/19th Prince of Wales’s Light Horse forming the VMR Squadron of that regiment.Silver drinking mug with 8/13 Victorian Mounted Rifles badge and engraving on side. Enlisted 8.7.40, barked 5.2.1941, disembarked Middle East 24.3.1941, posted to 2/12th Field Regt, served in the Seige of Tobruk, transferred to AACS 25.11.1941, graded group 3 Driver Mechanic 28.8.1942, hospital with lacerated scalp 12.11.1942, rejoin unit 8.1.1943, embark for Aust 22.2.1943, disembark Sydney 23.3.1943, serves then with canteen services, reclassified medically and discharged on 10.3.1944. The piece missing in the pocket book was caused by a piece of Shrapnel.Red-covered book, 127 pages. Useful information for soldiers.
