Carnival (Dutch: Carnaval) is an important annual event heralding Lent in the southern provinces of The Netherlands, with each village often having its own "Carnavalsclub" and traditions. Many Dutch immigrantsg from the southern provinces have continued this tradition and formed their regional Carnavals Clubs in Australia. Each club has its own colourful uniforms, including specific hats. There are potentially three types of hats: A formal hat for official events, a work hat for use during normal club nights and for those members lucky enough to be chosen for a year as the "Prince" of the club, a Prince's Hat. Dutch Carnival is primarily a festival celebrating human folly which is why the hats are like jesters' caps. "Carnaval" comes with a rich tradition of ridiculing people and institutions of authority, and so, for instance, the "Prince" is saluted with military salutes which are performed the wrong way round, to the great merriment of onlookers. Special songs celebrating the foolishness of people in high places, such as politicians, are composed each year for "Carnaval". This book, a de-luxe copy, was given to John Dwyer as the Chief President of the Australian Natives Association from 1938 to 1940. The Australian Natives Association (A.N.A.) was established in Melbourne in 1871 as a benefit society. Originally membership was restricted to white men born in Australia. The A.N.A. was influential in Australian politics, especially in the 1890s when it campaigned vigorously for Federation. In 1993 it merged with Manchester Unity I.O.O.F. to form Australia Unity, for many years the largest benefit society in Australia. The annual Victorian Conference of A.N.A was held in Warrnambool in 1931. John Beynon Dwyer (1904-1999) came to Warrnambool in 1937 and assumed control of the legal practice in Kepler Street of Desmond Dunne, retiring in 1984. J. B. Dwyer was a long-serving City Councillor (1937-1975) and was awarded an O.B.E. for municipal service in 1966. This book is of considerable importance as it was a presentation copy given to John B. Dwyer, a prominent Warrnambool lawyer, when he retired as Chief President of the Australian Natives Association in 1940. This is a soft-cover book of 92 pages. It is a de-luxe edition with a green leather cover with gold printing on the front. The papers in this work are focused on Thomas Brassey (1836-1918) who was born and educated in England. They include the period before he accepted the position of Governor of Victori, Australia, in 1895. During that time, he'd won a seat in parliament, which he held for 18 years, and for periods was a civil lord and parliamentary secretary for the Admiralty. He was passionate about the sea and addressed his naval and maritime concerns in public lectures, letters, pamphlets and books. He was also for a time lord-in-waiting to Queen Victoria and president of the Institute of Naval Architects. This book is from Flagstaff Hill's ‘Pattison Collection’, a collection of books and records that was originally owned by the Warrnambool Mechanics’ Institute, which was founded in Warrnambool in 1853. It was edited by J. Porter, and published by Longmans, Green and Co. of London. The Longmans, Green and Co. was originally founded in 1724 in London by Thomas Longman under the name Longman. In August of that year, he bought the two shops and goods of William Taylor and set up his publishing house there at 39 Paternoster Row. The shops were called Black Swan and Ship, and it is said that the 'ship' sign was the inspiration for Longman's Logo. After many changes of name and management, the firm was incorporated in 1926 as Longmans, Green & Co. Pty Ltd. The firm was acquired by Pearson in 1968 and was known as Pearson Longman or Pearson PLC. Interestingly, the logo in some books, such as “Steam Turbines 2nd edition, published in 1922” has the year “1724” but the logo in books such as “Advanced Agriculture, published in 1894” has the year “1726” in the logo.The book is significant for publishing historical papers and addresses by Lord Thomas Brassey, former Governor of Victoria before Australia’s Federation. This book was awarded to Amy Evelyn Bailey for second prize in Geography in the fourth form. Amy entered Ballarat College in January of 1885 at the age of 12. Parent/Guardian named in Registry as Ed Bailey residing in [Mt. Rowan?]. It is also noted in the Register that Amy came from Miss. [Keeps?] Ladies' School.During 1877 - 1891 Ballarat College accepted enrolments from female students. The school holds the original register of this period and notes that Amy Bailey entered the College at the age of 12. Presbyterian educators placed great value on a classical education matched with diligence in study. Book prizes were highly regarded and academic success admired. In the school’s early years prizes were ordered direct from London and had the school crest embossed in gold on the front or back cover. Michael Wilson learnt the craft of Goldsmithing after seeing well known sculptor and silversmith Matcham Skipper working in his studio at Montsalvat in and around 1970. This work is a gift to the Eltham Community in recognition of his twenty five years of developing his goldsmith skills and operating his business within the Shire. Wilson officially opened his commercial premises in 1985. Michael Wilson is a local jewellery maker. His work is influenced directly by the environment in which he lives. This sculpture is representative of his distinctive style of work as a nationally and an internationally recognised Designer and Goldsmith. Made of steel and powdercoated in aluminium with a concrete base. Decorative elements such as the ring encasing the cicada and the cicada's wings are guilded with 24ct gold leaf. The steel rod is burgundy in colour with the cicada painted a dark olive green to represent the 'Green Grocer' variety common in Eltham.
