Artefact, Apex trophy South West District, C 1990
This trophy, donated by Camperdown Apex Club, was awarded to members of the South Western District for Dinner Notice Excellence. The winners listed on the trophy are Gerard Ryan, Camperdown, Desi Pekin, Cobden, Dale Alexander, Camperdown, Tim Fitzpatrick, Terang, Leigh Parker, Terang, John Berger, Terang, Kevin Dwyer, Koroit, Maree Fenton, Terang, Grant Picone, Terang and Darren Williamson, Colac. The dates range from 1991 to 2002. Apex Clubs are service clubs that provide people with the opportunity to volunteer within their community. Members are aged between 18 and 45. The first Apex Club was formed in Geelong in 1931 and Warrnambool Apex Club was the fifth club formed in 1931. It went into recess in 1941 and was re-established in 1952. The club closed in 2011. This trophy is retained as it comes from the Apex Clubs of the South West District and Warrnambool Apex Club, now closed, was a member of this group. This is a wooden trophy consisting of a wooden base with a wooden plinth with two wooden columns on either side. The columns have a gold-coloured strip running along the entire length of the columns. On top of the plinth is a gold-coloured holder for a pennant or flag. The base and the plinth have gold-coloured metal name plates. All of these contain inscribed names except one. In October 2006, Orbost Secondary College 9/10 Enhancement Studies Class worked to preserve the memories of the Orbost community with three short films describing recollections of Orbost floods. There are ten stories including memories of the 1952, 1971 and 1991 floods. They are narrated by various Orbost identities - Anne Bridges; Kay Lynn; Ken Edlington; Margaret Adams; Max Reynols; Shirley Reynolds and Ngaere Donald.Floods have been part of the history of Orbost since settlement. This recorded play of the book 'The Weaver from Meltham' - The story of Godfrey Hirst was made circa 1951 and aired on ABC radio. It was handed down to Ken Hirst from his father Ivan Hirst, grandson of Godfrey Hirst. At the end there is an additional recording . Post Office (Anne Hunniford Postmistress) on left then the Commercial Bank of Australasia building. The house on the right, 'Derril,' was purchased by Walter Gahan in 1924 and was demolished in 1968 when Main Road was widened. In the distance on the left is Watson's Hotel and on the right (opposite side of the main road, Morris's Hotel Cross Ref: 0624This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book,"Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). A photo of Harelands in the 1960s. Harelands was a residence run by Melbourne Legacy to take care of children whose fathers were deceased servicemen, and who may have been left orphans, or whose mother may have been unable to care for them herself, or they needed to stay in Melbourne for education. Harelands generally looked after children up to the age of 14. The donor George Lister Coop was about 21 years of age when he took this photo in 1958. This photo is of Annesley Home for the Aged at 692-694 Whitehorse Road. It was originally a Methodist, later a Uniting Church facility. The new section in the photo was part of an extension built in 1958. The Queen Anne / Edwardian brick attic home was built in c1908 for William Pilkington, a manufacturer and was called 'St Martins'. Ownership stayed in this family until c1950. A new brick veneer 2 storey building sits adjacent to a red brick Edwardian home. This was the first time Ballarat's Sacred Heart College allowed girls a rowing elective and they rowed under the auspices of Kate Elliot (coach) Ballarat City Rowing Club based at Lake Wendouree Ballarat. L-R are Marion Taffe, Anne Taffe, Simone Scheelings, Danielle Herreen and coxwain Michelle Finn. Marion Taffe went on to be state and national champion and represent Australia internationally as a member of the Australian Rowing team at the world titles. -
