Bendigo and was employed as a saleswoman until she married John (Jack) Killeen in 1925. Jack was a junior postal worker. Mabel's father John Tully died on 11.08.1926. In 1927 Mabel and Jack were living at 70 Abbott Street Bendigo. Mabel did home duties and Jack was employed as a postal linesman. In 1931 Mabel and Jack were living back at 61 Charleston Rd Sandhursr East. In 1937 Jack was working as a barman, and as a fruiterer in 1943. Mabel's mother died 11.01.1941. Mabel's husband Jack Killeen died on 22.06.1975 aged 79 years. Mabel died on 7.01.1987 aged 90 years. Charles Cockcroft born Bundanoon, NSW, 1885, died 1966 and Annie Cockcroft (nee Green) born Lismore, NSW, 1881, died 1943. They are buried together in Eltham Cemetery. On 28 Nov 1931 C.R. Nicholls offered for auction the General Store and attached house he had built on the corner of York Street and Main Road in late 1925. The property was purchased by Charles and Annie Cockcroft from which they lived and ran their grocery business. Following the death of Annie in 1943, and prior to 1949, Charles sold the business and moved farming at Jeeralang North near Traralgon in Gippsland. In 1938, Arthur William Glass (known as Peter Glass) was studying painting under Max Meldrum. Much of their inspiration came from the Eltham bush and the nearby Yarra River. With his friends jazz musicians Graeme and Roger Bell, Peter bought land at the top of John Street: enchanted by Montsalvat, he had the objective of building a mud-brick house. War intervened, but then in 1948 he began working for Alistair Knox as a carpenter and mud-brick builder. By then, Peter had married, necessitating a larger house, which he built with help from Alistair Knox. As a trained architectural draftsman, Peter later progressed to working for Alistair in that role, eventually running the drafting office during the 1960s. He was deeply involved in the foundation of the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects, and went on to design many gardens, some in partnership with Alistair Knox and Gordon Ford. He died in 1997 and is buried in Eltham Cemetery with his wife Cecile. Mary was married to William Sneddon who was a postman in Surrey Hills for many years. His father James ran an estate agency in Surrey Hills which had been established by his father, also James, in the 1880s. William married Mary nee Bird in 1903 at his father's home. They lived at 'Cliburn' 14 Suffolk Road, named after Cliburn, Westmorland (later Cumbria) where Mary's mother, Mary Coulston came from. According to the donor, all their homes were given this name. Alice Louisa (Louise) Jackson was one of 12 children of George James Jackson and his wife Alice Eleanor (nee Taylor); both of whom were jewellers. One of her brothers, George Hall Jackson, served in WW1. The family lived at 'Handsworth', 7 Russell Street, Surrey Hills. Alice was born 25/9/1892 and died 25/8/1983. She worked there after graduating and became the charge sister of the ward for terminally ill patients, many of whom were TB patients. She would always ride in the centre of the road in case the trike tipped over. She left her estate to the hospital. From 1853 he lived in a simple farmhouse located near the present Ross Street until he had 'Ancyra' built in c.1889 from bricks made from clay dug from a quarry on the property. This was located in the now-park in James Street. John Butler Maling Snr was born in Shepreth, Cambridgeshire. He married Kate Conlan in 1882 and they had 3 children - Silas, Alick and Zillah. He died in 1912 and is buried in Box Hill Cemetery. Often referred to as John Butler Maling Senior as he had a nephew by the same name. He also lived on a similar sized property known as 'The Willows', located to the west. He became the first Mayor of Camberwell. The donor's grandparents Daniel Patrick Liddy and Beatrice Bridget Tyner (known as 'Beat') were married in at her parents' home in Glencoe, South Australia on 13 December 1908. They lived in the Carlton / North Melbourne area before moving to Surrey Hills. Electoral rolls list them at 92 Curtain Street, North Carlton in 1913. According to the donor, they rented several properties before purchasing 45 Wandsworth Road. They are listed at Albert Crescent in 1914 and 1919, but also lived in Zetland Road. They purchased 45 Wandsworth Road in c1923 and are listed in the electoral rolls there in 1924. The donor's mother Ellen Dorothy Liddy (known as Eileen) was born in 1909; her brother Daniel John Liddy was born in 1911, both in Carlton. Daniel Patrick Liddy died in 1955; his wife Beatrice died in 1959. This utility truck was one of two used by the Albury Gas Co, from the Gas Works in Kiewa Street, Albury to service the coal gas supply system in Albury during the war years from 1939-1945. The gas bags were installed as petrol was in short supply. One of the trucks was driven by John (Jack) Stanley Cruickshank, also known as Wodonga's Gas Man. Jack became foreman for the Wodonga Branch of the Albury Gas Co. An 80 millimetre galvanised steel pipeline was installed from the Albury Gas Co. in Kiewa Street, Albury, to 26 Church Street, Wodonga. A 40 horsepower pump pushed the gas to holding tanks. Sections of the gas pipeline to Wodonga can still be observed under some of the bridges from Albury to Wodonga. Jack also supervised the laying of the gas pipes in the streets of Wodonga, being hand dug by a gang of 15- 20 men. He was Wodonga's first Gas Fitter, both fitting gas appliances and overseeing their maintenance. James Mallett Bennett AFM and Bar MSM was born in St Kilda in 1894 and died in Weybridge, near London England, on 13 April 1922, in an aeroplane accident. Killed in the same accident was renowned aviator Sir Ross Macpherson Smith, KBE, MC & Bar, DFC & Two Bars. They were test-flying a Vikers Viking Amphibian aircraft which spun into the ground from 1000 feet (305 m), killing them both. Bennett was a long-serving crew member for Ross, as a mechanic, and had accompanied him on the first aeroplane flight from Egypt to India in December 1918, and from England to Australia in November-December 1919. He and Ross were mourned as national heroes and their bodies were brought back to Australia. Bennett was buried in St Kilda cemetery on 19 June 1922 after a lying-in-state at Queen's Hall, Parliament House. An obelisk in his honour was unveiled at St Kilda on 26 April 1927. Concert program of entertainment as aprt of fundraising for the Jacka Appeal, held on 17 February 1932 at St Kilda Town Hall. The headline performer was Gladys Moncreiff, 'Australia's Queen of Song'. Albert Jacka, a St Kilda Councillor, collapsed on 14 December 1931 after a council meeting and was admitted to Caulfield Military Hospital. He died on 17 January 1932 at the age of 39. He is most well-known for his military service in WWI, having received the Victoria Cross medal for his actions during the Gallipoli campaign and two more decorations for his bravery on the Western Front. He received a hero's welcome on his return to Melbourne in January 1920 and an estimated 50,000 people turned up to watch his funeral procession to St Kilda Cemetery, where he was buried with full military honours. The Minimax conical fire extinguishers were manufactured until 1960 and then removed from the company’s product range. The earliest model had been produced with a simple handle made of folded pressed metal that is similar if not the same as that on the Point Hicks extinguisher. Later handles were moulded and had more substance to the way they were cut and then folded to form a solid grip. The Point Hicks Minimax extinguisher is an early model that probably dates from the years when these devices were demonstrated across parts of Australia. While numerous examples of the extinguishers survive in public and private collections in northern hemisphere countries, few appear to exist in Australian museum collections. However, the auction house records confirm that some do survive in private collections. The Point Hicks extinguisher was found by lighthouse keepers in 1974 buried in the sand in a flattened but surprisingly intact condition. It was beaten back into its original shape but the body still retains various dents. In 2010, AMSA located the extinguisher at the National Trust’s Polly Woodside historic ship museum and it is now at the Point Hicks Lightstation. The Minimax conical extinguisher has first level contributory significance as a historic item of early fire-fighting equipment from the lightstation that dates from the early twentieth century.Conical shaped brass fire extinguisher painted red with small nozzle at one end and a pump section at the other end. Keith Winterbottom was born in the small settlement of Moulamen near Swan Hill in 1891.He enlisted in the AIF on the 7 April 1916 as a private and allocated to the 1st refit for the 38th Battalion. He was single and 25 years old and a strong 6 footer after working as a labour/timber cutter around Swan Hill. He embarked for France in July 1916 and disembarked at Plymouth on the 10 August 1916. Proceeded to France [ Ypres] on the 16 September and taken on strength with the 59th Battalion on the 8 October 1916. He suffered very serious GSW to his chest, arm, and left leg on the 10 December 1916 and was admitted to the Casualty clearing station at Heilly on the 11 December. His wounds were extensive and major and he died of these wounds on the 12 December 1916. He was buried at the Hospital Cemetery at Heilly, France. His kit that was returned to his mother contained a football, scarf, a razor strop and two ties. On the 18 June 1923 is mother was given the Memorial Plaque 318573 inscribed with her son's name Keith Winterbottom Memorial Plaque [Dead Man Penny]Inscribed with the name Keith Winterbottom. All edges of pages are gilt, The title, Holy Bible is printed in gold lettering at the top of the spine and it has five raised bands across it. Abraham Taylor was born 20 October 1811 in Derrycarn, Drumcree Parish, County Armagh, Ireland, the son of Richard William Taylor and Annie Abraham. He married Ann McClelland on 19 February 1852 in Dumcree. They emigrated to Australia arriving in Geelong aboard the Ann Thompson on Christmas Day, 1852. His younger sisters Mary and Martha and brother William John all having separately preceded them in 1851 and 1852. Abraham and Ann settled in Little Eltham, Abraham was recorded as being 40 years of age and Ann, 36. They made their home and living as an orchardist and gardener where they had three sons, William John (1853 Little Eltham), Richard (1855 Eltham) and Robert David (1857 Eltham), tow of whom became Councillors of the Shire of Eltham; William (1890-1911) and Robert David (1911-1920). In June 1871, Abraham Taylor, Eltham gardener, applied for a 120-acre allotment half a mile northeast of the Research Gully Hotel on June 30, 1871. A license was issued to him January 30, 1872, for 114 acres, being Allotment 8, Section 18, the balance of 6 acres being retained for reserve. He built on the land a two roomed dwelling of slabs and palings. He and his family lived there or at their 6 ½ acre Eltham property, which was used for orchard and garden as a residence. In January 1875 a lease issued to Abraham Taylor for the land one chain wide each side at the gully named ‘Wet Gully’ was excluded. In August 1881 Abraham Taylor paid up all fees and applied for a Crown grant. He vainly requested that the grant be issued to his son, Robert David Taylor, Eltham however the grant was in fact issued to Abraham Taylor, Eltham, gardener. Abraham died at home on June 1, 1890. He was greatly respected by all who knew him. His sister Mary predeceased him 1873and is also buried at Eltham cemetery. Wife Ann died at home 1 September, 1893 and was buried with him. Thomas Hamilton Tracey Osborne was born at Belfast 4/9/1851, the son of Thomas Hamilton Trail Osborne and his second wife Eliza nee Treacey. The young Thomas spent many hours among seamen and ships at Port Fairy. He moved to Warrnambool and commenced work as secretary to the Western Steam Navigation Company becoming manager in 1883. After the company failed he joined with Mark Saltau and they traded as Saltau and Osborne. His other main interest was writing some of which he did under the nom de plume of Sliding Gunter. These articles appeared in The Warrnambool Standard and the Belfast Gazette. He was knowlegable and maintained an interest in shipping and the sea. He died in 11th December 1902 and his body was taken on board the Julia Percy and was buried at sea out from the Breakwater. He was well liked in the district and people lined the Cannon Hill area and the foreshore to farewell him. As an avid writer he corresponded with many people and this letter is one such letter. It relates to recollections of the wreck of the Maria in 1840 out of Adelaide and the loss of life which followed. Unfortunately the letter is incomplete.This letter is of interest as it is addressed to one of Warrnambool's interesting people at the turn of the 20th century. Thomas Hamilton Tracey Osborne has left a legacy of much written work which records aspects of Warrnambool's history as well as his interest in ships and seafaring. Isaac Watts is most well-known as a Nonconformist hymn-writer. Many of his compositions are still in common use today and his Divine Songs, first published in 1715, is considered the first hymn-book for children. Watts’s non-hymnal writings include catechisms composed for children of various ages: the first set for children under seven years of age and the second set for children from seven to twelve years of age. Isaac Watts was the son of a schoolmaster, and was born in Southampton, July 17, 1674. He is said to have shown remarkable precocity in childhood, beginning the study of Latin, in his fourth year, and writing respectable verses at the age of seven. At the age of sixteen, he went to London to study in the Academy of the Rev. Thomas Rowe, an Independent minister. In 1698, he became assistant minister of the Independent Church, Berry St., London. In 1702, he became pastor. In 1712, he accepted an invitation to visit Sir Thomas Abney, at his residence of Abney Park, and made it his home for the remainder of his life. Rosina (Rose) Morey was a student at Ballarat Ladies College, girls' school of Ballarat College (1875 - 1892). Rosina Morey was born in 1871 and spent most of her life in Ballarat. Her father was Edward Morey, a mining and civic leader in Ballarat. The book was donated by Poss Morrow (Walker) having belonged to her great aunt Rose Morey. In 2008 Poss wrote: Rose loved sewing and my memories of her are that she was always dressed in black. She was the third daughter of Edward and Mary Ann Morey. Great aunt Rose spent many happy times with our family when we lived in East Malvern. My father Edward McDonald Walker was her nephew. She loved coming to the city by train to go shopping and join in the family celebrations. She never married but lived to a great age. She died in a nursing home in East Malvern 24 July 1960 and was buried in the Morey family grave in the Ballarat Old Cemetery. The obverse shows Sir Bertram Mackennal's bare headed effigy of King George V facing left with the legend 'GEORGIVS V BRITT:OMN:REX ET IND:IMD - "George V, King of all the British Isles & Emperor of India". The reverse, designed by William McMillan, shows St George, naked on horseback and armed with a short sword, an allegory of the physical & mental strength which achieved victory of Prussianism. The horse tramples on the Prussian eagle shield and the emblems of death, a skull and cross bones. In the background are ocean waves and just off centre near the right upper time is the risen sun of victory. The years 1914-1918 appear on the perimeter in the left and right fields respectively. The watered silk ribbon is 32mm wide with 3mm wide royal blue band, 2mm wide black band, 3mm wide white band repeated in reverse order and separated by 16mm wide orange band. Victory Medal - The medal is bronze disc 36mm in diameter with a winged figure of Victory on the obverse. The reverse has the words 'THE GREAT WAR FOR CIVILIZATION 1914-1918', all surrounded by a laurel leaf. The first electric train arrived on schedule at 10.50 am on Sunday 15th April 1923. Over 200 people were at the station to witness this. The train driver was Francis (Frank) Bond who lived in Bridge Street. He died in 1952 aged 85 and is buried at Eltham. A picture published in the Argus 16 April 1923 p.7 and shows the driver (Bond) and the conductor. He would have been around 56 years of age at this time. One of his son's William Joseph Bond was killed in France in July 1916.
