The Kew Civic Centre, as opposed to the adjacent Kew Civic Hall (see also Kew City Hall), was built to house a new Council Chamber and Council Offices in 1972. The Kew Library was to be located on the ground floor and accessed from the current carpark. This building replaced the former Town Hall in Walpole Street, Kew which had served as a town hall from 1865-1972. After the sale of the old Town Hall, the new Civic Centre was built to a design of the architects A K Lines, MacFarlane & Marshall. A fit-out of the building was still occurring when councillors and council officers moved into the building. In 1987, the Kew Library (and the Kew Historical Society) moved across the road to the reconfigured Civic Hall. The Civic Centre, pictured here, was ultimately sold to Trinity Grammar School following the amalgamation of Kew into the City of Boroondara.These four black and white photographs were taken by a photographer in the City Engineer's Department during the final construction phase. The file also includes four pages of handwritten, undated and unattributed working notes with property description, calculations and a rough plan (96mm x 94mm) of the ground floor of the building for the valuation. Also included in the file is a two page duplicate copy of a typed letter, dated 08/10/1970 from W V Scott to William and Lasica Co Solicitors containing the valuation of the relevant property and rental details. The file also includes a one page photocopy of a handwritten document dated 15/11/1967. It gives details of a previous mortgage. Paul Keating visited Sebastopol Community Centre in September 1995 as part of Jenny Beacham's campaign. Paul Keating was the 24th Prime Minister of Australia and the Leader of the Labor Party from 1991 to 1996. Norm Borchers was a long-term trade unionist (Amalgamated Engineering Union and the Australian Railways Union) and ALP member; he lived and worked in Ballarat. Norm Borchers passed away in 2008. Borchers was a Club President of the Sebastopol Lions Club (1975-76). He worked for the railways as an engineering employee and was long-term trade unionist (Amalgamated Engineering Union and the Australian Railways Union) and ALP member; he lived and worked in the Ballarat area. Norm was active in workplace disputes during the ALP split in 1955. He was a long time supporter of Ballarat Trades Hall. Betty Borchers worked as a legal secretary.
