The City of Moorabbin Historical Society was formed c 1960 by a group of Moorabbin area residents who were concerned that the history of the area should be preserved. A good response to a call for items related to the historical area of Moorabbin Shire brought donations of a wide variety of artefacts that are now preserved by the current members of CMHS at Box Cottage Museum. Helen Stanley, Secretary of CMHS, began producing a Newsletter for members in April 2007 to provide current information and well researched items of historical interestHelen Stanley has produced a bi-monthly Newsletter, 2007 - 2013, for the members of the City of Moorabbin Historical Society that contains well researched interesting historical items, notification of upcoming events, current advice from Royal Australian Historical Society , Museums Australia Victoria and activities of Local Historical Societies. The Newsletter is an important record of the activities of the CMHS1 x A4 paper printed on 1 side Issue 28 of the bi-monthly, City of Moorabbin Historical Society Newsletter produced by Society member and Secretary, Mrs Helen Stanley in August 2012 with photographs of the Ceremony celebrating the 150th Anniversary of the formation of The Moorabbin Roads Board. The Mayors of Glen Eira, Kingston and Brighton unveiled a Plaque at the corner of Cummins Road and Nepean Highway near the original site of the 'Toll gate' . Thought to have originated in Austria in 1869, postcards first gained popularity in Australia in the 1890s.They were used to send short messages to friends and family. This collection was generated by Mary Emma Elliot of Talgarno. Talgarno is a rural locality in Victoria, Australia, situated on the southern shoreline of Lake Hume, about 23 km east of Albury-Wodonga. The collection contains postcards from across the world. Mary Emma Sibley was born in Ironbark, Bendigo in 1859. She married James Elliot in 1893 and they settled at “Kelso”, Talgarno. They had two children – Mona and Sibley. Mary Emma Elliot died in Melbourne in 1944, aged 84 years. Photographed are Dionysios (Denis) S. Lekatsas (Lucas) and his wife Ekaterini (nee Paxinos). Dionysios owned D.S. Lucas Wholesale at the Victoria Market. In 1938 Dionysios and Ekaterini opened the Lucas Cafe in Elizabeth Street which was open 24/7 and, like many of the city cafes during the war years, was a booming business.A black and white photograph of a smartly dressed man and woman standing in front of a vintage car. John and Tom were both involved in the fruit and vegetable business; John owned a business for 18 years at the Victoria market (Central Fruit Agency); whilst Tom ran a fruit shop in Nicholson Street Carlton for more than 30 years.
