Understood to have been used in Linton c.1864. Information provided in 1993 by Russell McDonagh Bennett suggests these scales may also have been used at Dawsons Dam mine c.1907-1909.Beam scales used for weighing gold. Scales consist of two circular metal dishes, each supported by three wires suspended from a metal balance (beam), which in turn is linked to and supported by a vertical metal stand. A lever attached to the stand can be used to move the weighing dishes vertically and horizontally. A sailing or rope block has single or multiple pulleys with one or more sheaves enclosed in an assembly between cheeks or chocks. In use, a block is fixed to the end of the line, spar or load to be lifted such as at a transport dock. A rope line is reeved through the sheaves, and through one or more matching blocks at the far end, to make up what's known as a tackle. Generally, the more sheaves in the blocks that make up a tackle, the higher its mechanical advantage. Various types of blocks are used in sailing. Some blocks are used to increase mechanical advantage and others to change the direction of a line. A ratchet block turns freely when a line is pulled in one direction but does not turn in the other direction, although the line may slip past the sheave. The upright holding chopper blade e is a modification made because of the missing container.|The following description is from Ken Turner Booklet referred to under 'Reference'. ----|The Starrett food chopper would certainly have to be considered one of the more interesting inventions, which incidentally is now considered the ultimate in kitchen collectables. Laroy Starrett in later years' told of how the design of his food chopper was inspired by the action of the walking beam engine used on the Mississippi steam boats. When the crank handle of the chopper is turned, this sets in motion a mechanism which is just fascinating to watch. The crank activates a flywheel which in turn, by a series of cogs and levers, simultaneously rotates a food holding container and raises and lowers within the rotating container, a guillotine like 'chopping blade - the action does not only look like that of a beam steam engine, it even in a way sounds like one, although somewhat noisier. Starrett produced seven different models of these choppers, ranging in size appropriate for domestic use to heavy duty models for butchers, restaurants and for hotel use. The small model was capable of chopping 3lbs in three minutes, and the largest had a capacity for chopping something like 100 lbs in an hour. This pocket size version of the New Testament published by Oxford University Press London has no specific publication date but would have been a very convenient size to carry at all times. Possibly produced at the turn of the 19th- 20th C. which parallels the ownership of Arthur Dixon while serving as a Mariner. A rare example of a small compact travel or pocket size Bible complete with the owner's inscriptions and annotations. Reflects the faith of this mariner still retained until his death in the mid 20th C. This personal item is also significant as part of the gift of several items and papers belonging to this seafarer including sample ID photographs. In 1977 the 8/13 VMR was reduced to Independent Squadron titled " A Squadron 8/13 VMR ". This is one of a collection of photographs found at the Cobram Tip. This is a teacher's desk which came from Woodford State School. The school began in 1854 in a private dwelling with a new building constructed in 1874. The school still operates today.This is a very fine example of an early 20th century school teacher's desk. As it comes from one of the earliest schools in the district, it is of considerable significance.This is a wooden desk, now varnished, with a lift up, slanted lid with brass hinges and a brass key hole. On the top right hand side is a brass insert with a porcelain ink well. The desk has four turned legs with end struts. The desk lid may be made of pine but the rest of the desk seems to be made of a different wood. There are signs of old borer on the left hand front and the curved part on that side is missing.woodford state school

This Screw brand knife, made by Charles Taylors (Sheffield Tools) Ltd in England, was used in the making of components for the ship model Sovereign of the Seas. It is part of a collection of objects used by Jim Williams, maker of fine ship models from about 1930-1955. Most of the components for the models, as well as many of the tools, were handmade by Jim Williams. Jim’s family has donated the ship model “Sovereign of the Seas” and many tools, accessories and documents used in the making of this and other ship models have been donated to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village. Ship model of HMS Sovereign of the Seas, scale model of 17th Century English war ship, was handmade and carved from plans, enclosed in airtight glass case. All components of that model, including even the smallest pulleys, were hand crafted using tools designed and made by Jim. Outstanding details include functional rigging and moving cannons. This knife is connected with the hobby and skill of ship model making that has been crafted as a leisure activity for many generations. The hobby is often chosen by serving and retired mariners who appreciate the connection with maritime history. This knife was used by local Warrnambool man, Jim Williams, who was employed at Cramond and Dickson clothing store, and then at Fletcher Jones menswear for 27 years. It was used in making components for the model of the historic ship, the Sovereign of the Seas. The Sovereign of the Seas was a historic 17th century English war ship with important maritime heritage. Modelling knife; metal blade set into a turned wooden handle. The blade has been deliberately shaped to a 45 degree angle. Label on the handle, ‘Screw’ brand, made by Charles Taylors (Sheffield Tools) Ltd. of England. It has a logo of a screw within an oval. These trousers have been made by Fletcher Jones and Staff. This business was established by David Fletcher Jones (1895-1977) in 1924 when he leased three shops in Liebig Street, Warrnambool. In 1928 he moved his business to the main retailing area near the Liebig Street/Koroit Street intersection. In 1931 a shop built to Fletcher Jones’ requirements was erected and by 1938 he had a staff of 40. By 1945 FJ trousers were sold in 123 stores in Victoria and in 1948 the Fletcher Jones factory was established in Flaxman Street Warrnambool, officially named Pleasant Hill. In 1951 the company became Fletcher Jones and Staff and by the mid 1970s the staff had 75% ownership. By this time FJ and Staff had become one of the largest clothing manufacturers in Australia with 55 shops and almost 3000 employees. The range of clothing was enlarged to include both men’s and women’s wear. In the 1980s, after the death of Fletcher Jones, the abolition of import tariffs and the availability of cheap imported clothing caused the Fletcher Jones Company to decline and to be sold to a Geelong company. By 2011 all Fletcher Jones shops had closed. These trousers are of great interest as they are a product of a Warrnambool business that was nationally and internationally known in the 20th century for its quality men’s wear, especially the Coverdine brand trousers. The Fletcher Jones business remains one of the most important businesses, (if not the most important), that ever existed in Warrnambool. It employed a great number of local people in the second half of the 20th century, and is remembered with great fondness by many people in the city and surrounds today. The Fletcher Jones Gardens at the Factory site are still maintained today and are a tourist attraction in the city. These are a pair of brown Fletcher Jones trousers made of Coverdine material (87.5% wool with nylon). There is some lining around the waist area and the legs are turned up at the end with some leather binding inside the bottom legs. The waist band is stiffened and is fastened with a metal clip and two buttons. The waist band has two adjustable areas using tabs and two buttons each side. The front is hand embroidered on brown loose weave fabric, the back a pale yellow polished cotton fabric. The edges on the back have been turned and machine stitched. Hand-stitching has been used to join the top to the back and to add the fringe around the edges. The embroidery uses tapestry wool in cream, yellow, brown and green tones. It is thought that this item may have been made for use at the Ballarat School of Mines. The use is unknown. At one time it was thought to have something to do with lens-making, but this is no longer thought to be the case. Wilma Hall (later Hobbs) wore this blazer while studying at the Ballarat Teachers' College in 1954-55. The college was established after the Victorian State Government and the State Education Department decided to establish two provincial teachers' colleges, at Ballarat and Bendigo. On 04 May 1926 W.H. Ellwood (Principal), Miss A. Bouchier, and Mr A.B. Jones, welcomed the first enrolment of 61 students to undertake the one year course. In 1927 the College moved to the former Ballarat East Town Hall in Barkly Street, which was remodelled for their use. It closed in December 1931 due to the Great Depression. In 1946 Ballarat Teachers' College reopened and relocated to the Dana Street State School. It was originally planned to open as a women's college, for whom the residence at 130 Victoria Street was purchased, but the decision was made to admit resident men from Ballarat. Mr T.W. Turner was appointed as Principal in 1951 and directed the introduction of a two year course for the Trained Primary Teachers' Certificate. The former one year course was terminated at the end of 1951. In 1958 the College was relocated to a custom built facility at Gillies Street, in close proximity to the Ballarat Botanical Gardens. Numbers increased with the introduction of the Trained Infant Teachers' Certificate course under the guidance of Mary Egan. With the introduction of a three year Diploma Course in 1968 accommodation became cramped. The introduction of the Diploma of Teaching (Primary) led to the Trained Infant Teachers' Certificate being discontinued in 1969, and the end of the Trained Primary Teachers' Certificate in 1969. Secondary Art and Craft students began studies at Ballarat Teachers' College in 1969 under Mr Ted Doney. In 1971 Mr D. Watson was appointed Principal. The State College of Victoria was proclaimed by Order in Council on 24 July 1973, and Ballarat Teachers' College became a constituent college of the State College of Victoria, and was known as State College of Victoria, Ballarat. By 1975 the College moved to Mount Helen as part of the Ballarat College of Advanced Education. Pre service teachers currently undertake their studies on the Mount Helen Campus of Federation University. Francis James Browne died in Sydney 1963. He had a long career in obstetrics and gynaecology. Summary of appointments include: General Practice in Wales, Maternity Department of the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, 1st director of obstetric unit, University College Hospital London. Retired and continued postgraduate teaching in London and NSW. Married to Grace Cuthbert, who was director of Maternal and Baby Welfare in NSW. Collection of objects transferred from the Archives to the Museum collection found amongst Professor FJ Browne's papers.Square medal with ribbon. Medal is decorated with blue, green, and red enamel and has silver inserts. Medal design is divided vertically and horizontally by silver lines and carries the text, "B.M.A/DUBLIN/1933". There are three symbols on the upper section of the front of the medal. This building became decrepit gradually and prior to its demolition in the 1950's, the end walls of the crossings were supported with heavy 'flying shores'. Documentary evidence records that the first occupier of this substantial two-storey residence was Harry Karlbaum, a sharebroker and although the owner's name is not listed in the Rate Books for this first year, it appears in 1893 as Robert Crawford Anderson, a merchant, The property was given an initial N.A.V. of £150 in 1892 while by 1900 it was listed as having eleven rooms.
