Peter Johnston was the boyfriend of Iris Dorey, a daughter of the pioneering Dorey family. Iris ran the Quamby Cafe (now Cuckoo Restaurant) and later in life married Ted Woolrich from Woolrich Nursery. Peter was killed on active service during WW1 on May 15th 1918. These books are part of the Lawless Collection. The Lawless family lived in Orbost from 1907 - c 1920. John Francis Lawless had a saddlery shop. He died at an early age - 47 years - June 7 1912, leaving his wife, Elizabeth and seven children. The eldest son, Victor Rowland lawless volunteered for serv ice in WW1 but did not leave Australia because of illness. The second son, Edward Vincent Lawless (b 1895 d 1917) worked for McCoy & Co. in Orbost, coachbuilding, undertakers, general blacksmiths and farriers, prior to enlisting in WW!. He was trained as a signaller and was sent to France where he was killed in action on 9.10.1917. Elizabeth Lawless worked as a ladies' nurse (midwife) in Orbost prior to leaving the district in 1920. She lived to 6.6.1975 aged 104 years.These personal documents, photographs, medals and books give an insight into the human element of World War 1 ensuring that those who were part of the Orbost community and died while playing a vital role during this time are remembered.Three books used by Edward Vincent Lawless during his service in WW1. 1846.5 has a black cover and contains hand-written notes and diagrams in an exercise book. 1846.6 has a purple cover and contains hand-written notes on bombing. 1846.7 is a small book with a black cover and a ribbon for tying closed. A brass gift box with an embossed hinging lid which was presented to WW1 sailors and soldiers for Christmas 1914. The gift was at the initiative of HRH The Princess Victoria Alexandra Alice Mary the daughter of the then King George V and Queen Mary. Small booklet produced by the Australian Branch of the Red Cross Society, Headquarters and Central Depot, with guidelines for making donations of goods such as clothing, linen, blankets, bandages, books and food items to the Australian War effort and instructions for knitting woollen items of clothing intended for defence personnel on active service. The booklet is not dated however it is from the WW1 era and has twenty pages.The booklet front page has the following text: "RED CROSS SOCIETY", "AUSTRALIAN BRANCH", "Headquarters and Central Depot" and a note printed in red "When forwarding parcels, send by post complete duplicate list with number of each article to Officer-in-Charge." The Red Cross symbol is featured in the form of a red +.

Donated by A R Kyle (1916) in 1994; does not appear to have been attached to blazer. Roy Kyle entered Ballarat College in 1912. He marched with Pompey Elliott's 15th in WW1. (see in the footsteps of Pompey p. 173-4. Roy was awarded the College Cup a prestigious sporting trophy in 1912. (see VC000054) The College Cup was awarded to the competitor who won all three 120, 250 and 440 yard races. For more information about the College Cup see Ring-A-Roo December 1993. In 1996 Roy was the oldest 'Old Collegian and youngest surviving Gallipoli veteran. Roy passed away 9th October 1996. Arthur Edward Mansfield. Records are confusing but it appears he initially enlisted on 1.5.1916 in 20th reinforcements 5th Bn age 19 years 10 months, discharged medically unfit 15.8.1916 not due to misconduct. He was accepted again for specific duty on 20.9.1917 No 19332 in the AAMC and embarked on 25.9.1917 on the No 2 Australian Hospital ship as an Orderly. James E Newland was awarded the VC in April 1917 'for most conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty, in the face of heavy odds, on three separate occasions.' Twin screw, triple expansion engine making 13 knots, 1910 owned by the Scottish Shire Line Ltd, London and registered at Glasgow.Wooden framed sepia photograph of Servicemen aboard ship being farewelled by family and friends.The vessel pictured is the HMAT Ayrshire. Bronze Memorial plaque and Memorial Scroll issued to families whose relative was killed in action during word war 1. The history of the dead man's penny began in 1916 with the realisation by the British Government hat some form of an official token of gratitude should be given to the fallen service men and women's bereaved next of kin. Production of the plaques and scrolls, which was supposed to be financed by the German reparation money began in 1919 with approximately 1,150,00 issued. There were some relatives who returned the pennies to the Australian Government in protest as b they felt it was insulting and it did not replace their loved one's life.Killed in Action William Edward Ernest Bond joined the 58th Bn on the 24th November 1915 as a labourer from Geelong. As a private (4296), he was sent to France and the Western Front. He initially went missing in action in the Fleurbaix area on 19th of July 1917. It took a court of Inquiry in the field in September,1917 to determine he was killed in action, although his body was never recovered. He died aged 18. His name can be found on Panel 14, VC Corner Australian Cemetery and Memorial, Fromelles, Lille, Nord Pas de Calais, FranceMemorial Bronze Plaque and Scroll.
