Photographic print of the Walmer Street Bridge. The view of the Bridge is from the Abbotsford side of the Yarra. A section of pipe on the near side of the bridge is a remnant of the irrigation pipes that carried water from above Dight's falls to the Melbourne Botanic Gardens. The former bridge, constructed in 1896 was swept away in the 1901 Flood. It has two major brick piers while the remainder of the trestle supports are metal. The original photograph from which this copy was made was taken after 1901 as it shows the second bridge under construction. Edward James Pardew died in 26/9/1927 aged 92. He came to Orbost from New Zealand in 1886 and selected 720 acres of hill land in the Brodribb area. He was a member of the first Orbost Shire Council. His daughter had a fruit & meat shop in McLeod Street. He was an inaugural vestryman of St James Church of England. The SS Athenic was one of 2 vessels of the Shaw Savill Line. One became a whale factory ship and the second a passenger ship built and launched by Harland and Wolff in1944 and had maiden voyage 1947 between London and New Zealand. Donor of this document Mr GW Duncan sailed on the maiden voyage and has also gifted sample menus from that trip.Mariner Duncan had a particular regard for the Mission to Seafarers. A plate for display on a commissioned new table at the MTSV acknowledges his bequest and the material donated. Collectively the G W Duncan material includes: photographs, professional data memorabilia and written and commercially printed resources. The memorabilia relates to his career at sea and in particular the role of an engineer, including a handwritten manual of notes and references relating to the mechanical and engineering aspects and areas of responsibility for maintenance. The interest in this picture is the two ex servicemen are wearing the Gallipoli Star. This decoration was approved by King George V to be awarded to Australian and New Zealanders who landed on the Peninsula. After much controversy the medal was not issued. Was found in an envelope marked "For Melbourne Legacy. Anzac Day Parade featuring Legacy Lads.' From his medals it appears he served in the RAF in UK during World War 2 as he has the Europe Air Crew Star. He has a New Zealand War Service medal (on black and white ribbon on far right of photo), which implies he might have originally been from New Zealand. According to Forces War Records UK, the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) is awarded to Officers and Warrant officers for "an act or acts of valour and courage or devotion to duty performed whilst flying in active operations against the enemy". Marjorie Morgan discovered some of his carvings and found nothing about the carver. She set herself the project and contacted many family members who had received a carving as a gift. She organised a family reunion so everyone could bring their carvings to one place (Surrey Gardens) and have them photographed for the book. This is a photograph of crew members that formed the football team of the S.S. Hororata. The vessel was ordered by the New Zealand Shipping Co Ltd of London, completed in 1914. In august of that year she was requisitioned ( as A20) for transport of the Australian expeditionary force in WW1. In WW2 she was known as the SS Waroonga and torpedoed in 1943. (Internet ref 2018) This vessel was a regular visitor to Melbourne and crews visited and contributed donations to the MTS.This photograph provides an early record of the many crew based football (soccer) teams that would enjoy matches when ashore with other crews. The Mission to seamen organised and promoted many such matches and encouraged the friendly competition during outings. In addition this particular group photograph is of interest as it indicates the many talents and interests of the crew through the items and animals the individuals are posed with. In 1920 Michael Taffe was awarded Junior Cornet Solo Champion at Ballarat's South St competitions, The Grand National Eisteddfod of Australasia. This competition was the premier band contest in Australia with musicians from every state and New Zealand taking part. This Boosey & Co cornet was on display in the window of Allan's Music store Melbourne when the building was severely damaged by fire but these items were saved. Part of a large family collection of local & family history items at Hymettus Cottage, home to the same Ballarat family for the past 125.
