Photograph, Murrumbeena Road, 229A, Murrumbeena, 2001
Originally labelled "Beauville Estate, Established 1936, Still Thriving 65 years on, 10th March 2001", the Beauville Estate Album contains colour photographs of houses in the Estate. They were taken around the time of the Beauville Estate’s 65th Heritage Celebration held on 10/03/2001 and donated to the Caulfield Historical Society shortly afterwards. Photographer unknown. From Glen Eira’s Heritage Management Plan by Andrew Ward (1996) Vol 2 p78: In Murrumbeena Road, the shops which form part of the estate are a simple cream brick row relieved by manganese bricks in bands across the upper storeys.City of Glen Eira’s Heritage Management Plan Vol 2 p79 (this is p84 of the pdf version) – HO12 Beauville Estate and environs, Murrumbeena: The Beauville Historic Area is important at the State level as the first large housing estate undertaken by the AV Jennings Construction Co, later Jennings Group Limited, Victoria’s largest home builder. It is important also as a very early estate development incorporating a range of features other than houses and including made roads, shops and recreation facilities. In this respect it was the forerunner of the comprehensively planned housing estate of the post war era. The estate is distinguished by its aesthetic values, as is the earlier and comparable Hillcrest Estate, which are formed by a combination of restrained diversity in house styles, with the exception of no. 30 in the emerging International style, and by a landscaped garden environment. Colour photograph of a section of a double storey, unpainted brick, commercial property containing shops at ground level all with awnings over the footpath. This specific property is a fish and chip shop. The upper storey brick residence features a curtained window, a flat roof and decorative two tone bands of brickwork. It has a large street seat on the footpath out front.BLUE SEA FISH & CHIPS / TAKE AWAY FOODmurrumbeena, architectural styles, 1930's, inter war style, a.v. jennings, av jennings, jennings, beauville estate, murrumbeena road, milk bars, commercial establishments, flats, fish & chip shops, sir albert victor jennings, a v jennings construction co, beauville estate heritage area, glen eira city council, architectural features, jennings group limited, land subdivision, beauville historic area, brick features, restaurants -

China, Cups x 4, 1864
These dishes were part of a crockery set used in the George Rolfe household at Lyndoch, Warrnambool. George Rolfe (1836-1919) was a Melbourne tea merchant who acquired land at the mouth of the Hopkins River in Warrnambool from the 1880s on as a holiday home. He developed the property over the years, adding a windmill and reservoir, bone and chaff sheds, a stable, jetty and boathouse and an extensive garden. In 1891 he married Mrs Annie Lake and it was his stepdaughter, Florence Lake who built the house, Lyndoch in the 1920s. This building today forms part of an Aged Care Facility. This item is part of the larger Rolfe dinner set as described on Victorian Collections at VC001421 and VC001422These cups are part of a crockery set, and are kept because they belonged to George Rolfe, a prominent property owner and farmer in Warrnambool in the late 19th century and early 20th century. The items, dating from 1864, have social significance showing the type of crockery used by a more affluent family in the 19th century.Four small white cups decorated with aqua band around the top of each cup . A scalloped pattern of dots are suspended from the solid band which is decorated with a row of gold dots. There is a gold rim at the base of the cup.Mintonrolfe, lyndoch, warrnambool, minton cups, mrs annie lake -

Programme, Heidelberg Eisteddfod Society : Solo & Party Competitions, 03/10/1952
This small programme is for the Solo & Party Championships, incorporating a C & D Grade band contest conducted by the Heidelberg Eisteddfod Society under the patronage of the Victorian Bands' League. This part of the Eisteddfod was held from October 3rd - October 10th 1952. The program details lists of names of bands people and the instruments they played as well as numerous C & D grade bands that participated. Quite a number of the junior musicians were part of famous school and youth bands of the time. This Eisteddfod program is significant as it details a typical suburban Eisteddfod competition which included brass bands and brass musicians. The lists of names are also significant as they indicate which bands people had their start during this time and which bands they were part of. Postcard, Malvern Tramways Band, 1921, c. 1921
The Malvern Tramways Band (Stonnington City Brass) was one of the leading brass bands in Victoria and Australia for many years. The conductor, Mr Harry Shugg, arrived to conduct the band in 1915 having previously been conductor of the Geelong Harbour Trust Band. Harry Shugg went on to conduct the band for an amazing 31 years where they won numerous competitions. On the back of the postcard is a handwritten message dated 16/12/1921 from Harry Shugg to a M. W. BoinaThis postcard is significant as it presents an photo of a very famous band and their conductor. It is also significant as it has a message on the back written by Mr Harry Shugg with no address which means that the postcard was handed to the recipient. It is part of a series of four postcards which show the different groups that Harry Shugg conducted over his lifetime.Rectangular black and white photograph printed on a postcard. On the back is a hand written message.Back: Printed: "Postcard", "Kodak Australia" "Correspondence | Address Only" Vertical print: " Muntz Studio, Malvern" Message: "To M. W. Photograph, McMahon's Band (Hillgrove). Winners of the Recent Competition at Tamworth. (Photo by Mr. Angus McNeil), 1897
Bandmaster Hugh McMahon is noted for conducing the McMahon's Brass Band (Hillgrove Brass Band) from 1892 - 1900. He was a very famous bandmaster and he, and his brothers, were all extremely competent musicians. In 1897 the McMahon's band competed in Tamworth and won the competition. Their closet rival, the Hillgrove Town Band was placed third. Unfortunately the McMahon's Band was wound up in 1900 when the six McMahon brother followed their brother John to the Western Australia goldfields at Kalgoorlie-Boulder.The photo is remarkable for its condition and completeness. Here we have a photo of 20 bandsmen who have just won a competition dressed in very neat suits. We can also see a distinctive crest on the bass drum and the two trombone players are playing valve trombones. The photo is also significant as it shows one of the two Hillgrove brass bands that were in existence at the time and this was while Hillgrove was a bustling mining town. The six famous McMahon brothers are all in this photo and this would be one of the rare photos of them playing in the one band.Sepia photo mounted on card.hugh mcmahon, harry mcmahon, john mcmahon, edward mcmahon, will mcmahon, alick mcmahon, mcmahon's band (hillgrove), hillgrove, hillgrove town band, tamworth, victorian bands' league -
