Photograph - Digital Photograph, Kew Mental Hospital, William Beattie Smith, 1899-1902, c.1972
The Kew Lunatic Asylum was completed in 1871 and opened in 1872. The year 1972 marked its centenary. Over the years, members of staff at the asylum collected records, photographs, publications and plans of the asylum, later hospital. The Society has a number of important collections relating to the asylum and the Children's Cottages. These include the Dr Cliff Judge, the Irena Higgins and the Dr Fred Stamp Collections. This portrait photograph is one of a number of items donated by the family of the late Dr. Fred Stamp who was the last medical superintendent. Dr Frederick Stamp graduated from Bristol Medical School (UK) in 1968. He and his family emigrated to Australia in 1977 to Goulburn (NSW), moving to Melbourne in 1980. He became Superintendent in 1981 until the Hospital's closure in 1988. Since the donation was made, this item has been declared a Permanent Government Record, and has been transferred to the Public Record Office Victoria in 2020.Following their closure, the medical records of the Kew Mental Hospital and the Children's Cottages Kew were relocated to the archives of the relevant Victorian Government Department and also to the Public Records Office of Victoria. Other collections, such as the Fred Stamp Collection, were assembled by staff who worked at the hospital. The years leading up to the closure of Kew must have been fraught, and many of the items in the hospital were probably destined for hard waste disposal. Dr. Fred Stamp, the medical superintendent, kept aside or rescued a number of these items, of which this is one. Following his death, his family donated these to the Kew Historical Society. The Society recognises these items to be of lasting historical significance, essentially due to their provenance and to their rarity. Together they (and the Judge and Higgins Collections) are an invaluable aid for researchers of the treatment of psychiatric illnesses in Victoria.William Beattie Smith, Medical Superintendent, Kew Lunatic Asylum 1899-1902. Painting - Portrait of Dolly Barton for Peoplescape, Betty L. Barberis, 2001
In February 2001 the National Council for the Centenary of Federation called upon Australians to nominate someone whom they felt had significantly affected their lives, their community or our country. Thousands of these heroes and quiet achievers were selected. Betty Churcher, a member of the National Council, chaired the Peoplescape Selection Panel. Nominators then made life size, cutout figures to represent their "hero". The sculptures were installed in alphabetical order, on the hill at Parliament House and down to the Federation Mall in Canberra, each with a plaque at its base outlining the individual's achievement. This portrait was painted by Betty Barberis to represent her mother "Dolly" Barton. Dolly raised 12 children, lived through 2 World Wars and the depression. She kept the family dairy farm running whilst her husband was serving in World War 2 whilst still supporting the war effort through the Red Cross and CWA and the church guild. Betty’s great body of work included landscapes, banners, millinery, ceramics, and a bronze sculpture of her husband Vern Barberis who was a fellow schoolteacher and represented Australia as a weightlifter, winning a bronze medal at the Helsinki Olympics in 1952. She was also an art teacher of 22 years. Betty passed away at The Grange, Wodonga on 26 November 2013.This portrait was created by a renowned and highly regarded artist from Northeast Victoria for a national celebration of the centenary of Australian Federation in 2001.A large oil painting depicting a portrait of Dolly Barton, mother of the artist Betty L. Barberis. The painting includes representations of her 12 children, her farming way of life, her commitment to the community and to the war effort. The image was painted on to yellow corflute for exhibition. It has since been covered with perspex to protect the image.betty l. barberis, myrtle ann 'dolly" barton, peoplescape 2001 -

Certificate - Invitation, Government Printer, ca. 1901
Australia's six British colonies, New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania, became a Federation on January 1st, 1901, uniting to be the Commonwealth of Australia. The Government of Victoria invited Mr C Swinburne to attend the official celebrations of His Royal Highness, the Duke of Cornwall and York (later King George V)'s Opening of the Federal Parliament. The historic occasion was held at Melbourne's Royal Exhibition Building, beginning at noon on May 9th, 1901. Swinburne was one of the 12,000 guests to witness the event in person, along with representatives from all six states of Australia. The assembled group represented politics, business and industry, the arts, religion, education, and those in roles of public service. In Melbourne, the occasion was followed by two weeks of celebrations. Mr Chas (Charles) Grant Swinburne (1864-1934) of Warrnambool was a prominent member of the Toc H. Progress Association and several other local clubs and societies. He married Susan Jane Granter (1867-19 June 1935), also a Warrnambool resident, in 1891. Susan was the daughter of Joseph (1832-1879) and Ann Granter (nee Holley). Her father had arrived in Melbourne on the ship Marco Polo in February 1856. In 1868, he was a shareholder of the Warrnambool Steam Packet Co., His portrait is among those recognised on the historic Warrnambool Pioneers Board. The invitation is significant for its connection to the Federation of Australia in 1901. It is also significant for its connection to Victoria's Parliament, and to HRH the Dunk of Cornwall and York. It is of significance that Mr Swinburne of Warrnambool was recognised as worthy of the invitation to such an important event in the history of Australia.Invitation; certificate size, colour lithograph printed on cream card with gilt highlighting. It is from the Victorian Government to Mr C Swinburne, to celebrate the Opening of Federal Parliament by HRH The Duke of Cornwall and York, held in Melbourne. The invitation has printed and handwritten text, figures, decorative symbols, and gilt accents behind the central figure, on the capital letters of the message, and on the Advance Australia Arms. A handwritten label covers previously handwritten text. The invitation is addressed to Mr C Swinburne. The invitation has no reference to a date, address or time.
