This letter book was used by George Barber to produce letters to send to clients and to retain a copy of this correspondence. Barber was a prominent Warrnambool lawyer in the 19th century. English-born George Barber (1814-1897) came to Warrnambool from Port Fairy in 1853, making him one of the earliest lawyers in the town. In 1867 he formed a partnership with William Ardlie, and this partnership continued until Barber retired in1879. Barber was active in community affairs, being involved with such institutions as the Warrnambool Cricket Club, the Warrnambool Hospital, the Warrnambool Gas Company and the local Horticultural Society. This letter has a connection to one of Warrnambool's important early lawyers and will be useful to researchers if the handwriting can be read.This is a letter book of 750 pages with a hard grey-coloured cover and black taping on the spine. The front cover has a paper label with a handwritten title on the outside and a signature on the inside cover The cover is partly detached from the spine. The pages contain an alphabetical index at the front and copies of handwritten letters. There are many pages unused and there are three loose paper items seemingly not connected to the contents of the letter book. Kettle, Early 20th century
This kettle would have been used on top of a wood stove to boil water to make tea and other beverages and to use for other household purposes. It would have been a common household item in Australian homes from the beginning of European settlement up about the mid 20th century when wood stoves, although still in use in many country areas, were largely superseded by gas or electric stoves in most households. The kettle was made of durable material as it usually remained on the top of the stove for most of the day so that hot water was readily available. This kettle is retained as an example of an essential household item used in the past. It will be useful for display.This is a circular-shaped black iron kettle with a handle and a spout. The kerosene lamp is a type of lighting device that uses kerosene as a fuel. Kerosene lamps have a wick or mantle as light source, protected by a glass chimney or globe; lamps may be used on a table, or hand-held lanterns may used for portable lighting. There are three types of kerosene lamp: traditional flat wick, central draught (tubular round wick), and mantle lamp. The side screws adjust the length of the wick and hence the strength of the flame / light produced. She presented several programs on ABC Radio National including "For The God Who Sings" for which she is best known. She has reported on religious affairs for ABC all over the world including a convention in Korea where she encountered KGB agents and accidentally stumbled into a protest and got tear gassed. The correct spelling of the family is POWNE (REF: electoral rolls, BDM records). May Trebilcock Powne (15/9/1906-2/7/2009), referred to by the donor, was the daughter of Charles Powne (1871-1926) and May Trebilcock (1882-1974), both of whom are buried in Box Hill Cemetery as is their daughter May. Probate gives his occupation as collector for the Metropolitan Gas Company. His death notice gives the name of the property as "St Columb". The Pownes had 2 other daughters: Linda Merle (1914-1997) and Nancy Helen (1916-1996). This home was owned by the same family from the time it was built for approximately 90 years.A colour photo with rounded corners of part of the front veranda of a red brick home, the details of which would place it as Edwardian style. The red brick is tuck-pointed and has a horizontal band of render, painted cream, as are the door surrounds and the arched timber fretwork. There are 6 steps leading up to the veranda, which appears to be timber, painted deep red. Geological specimen - Sample of Pulverised Dried Brown Coal, Maddingley Brown Coal Mine, 1981
The Maddingley area of Bacchus Marsh was surveyed for brown coal deposits in the 1930s. By the early 1940s brown coal in large quantities was being extracted and was transported to Melbourne where it was used to fire boilers for the Australian Paper Mills (APM) company. By the 1970s APM was using natural gas instead of coal. Maddingley brown coal was then used to fire boilers for the CRA/VISY cardboard factory at Bacchus Marsh. This factory closed down in 1990. During the 1990s the mine was acquired by the Calleja family company who ran transport and waste management operations.The Maddingley Brown coal mine was a major industry in Bacchus Marsh for 50 years. This British made type "N1087" and code "N1087" C Ericsson auto flameproof telephone was used in the drum filling platform of the Golden Fleece Depot, in Hovell St., Wodonga. The type "N1087" and code "N1087" C Ericsson flameproof telephone was introduced in 1937 and certified by the British Mines Department as flameproof for Petroleum and Acetone Vapours, in 1938. It was designed specifically for outdoor use in areas where there may be exposure to inflammable vapours and hazardous chemicals such as petroleum. Each contact or switch point is enclosed in its own flameproof chamber, to reduce the risk of ignition and the volume of gas.The Ericsson auto flameproof telephone has local significance due to its use in the Golden Fleece Depot in Wodonga, as well as national and international significance due to its date and the rarity and relatively complete condition.Black Ericsson auto flameproof rotary dial telephone secured in a hinged cast iron case painted black. Rubber tubing connected to the bakelite handset and an adjacent metal plate with the name "Ericsson", type "N1087" and code "N1087 C", and certification of the telephone as flameproof with the letters FLP. "Ericsson" on the top left corner of the metal plate.
