Yields information about the griding of wheels at the tram depot following the installation of a grinder by the SEC during the mid 1930's. Shows the nature of the work and set up.Black and White photograph, of the SEC Ballarat depot wheel grinder being used to grind the wheels of a single truck tramcar. Shows a pit man/machinist using the equipment with the drive belts and wheels moving. The machinist is dressed in heavy clothing. Shows the detail of the operation. Date unknown - possibly late 1930's after installation. Copy of a letter and associated documents written to the Town Clerk, City of Ballaarat, dated Aug 1, 1985 seeking the support of the Council in attaining the body of the tramcar in Ballarat East. (Tram was actually obtained in December). Signed by the Secretary, Richard Gilbert. Mentions Frank Hanrahan as President for further information. Enclosed within letter is a two page note on BTPS Letter head outlining the history of the tramcar, its restoration, current condition, possible operation and value of the restoration. Attached as well is a folded drawing out an Adelaide double deck horse tram (Reference Reg. Item No. 706.1 ) and a photocopy of the builders of the first horse tram at the depot in 1887 (Reference Reg. Item No. 765 ). Photocopies of letters copied by Alan from the City of Ballarat's files. 1801.1 - Photocopy of letter dated 23/9/1921, signed by Mr. Pringle of ESCo to Col. G.F. Morton, City Clerk of the City of Ballaarat concerning the increase of tramway fares and the withdrawal of tokens due to the increase in costs. Gives details of fare structures, costs, tramway wages, section changes, American and English tramway fares and increase in the cost of coal. Three sheets stapled together in top left hand corner. 1801.2 - Photocopy of letter dated 23/7/1913 concerning the introduction of one man tramcars, signed by Mr. Pringle of ESCo, to Col. Williams, City Clerk of the City of Ballarat, and the introduction of celluloid tokens which would replace slip tickets and work better in the Fare Boxes. Found that cable too expensive and horse tramway developed instead. Gave details of horse tram systems, costs and operations. Part of a Section of the newspaper titled "Enter the Past", looking for local history stories. Gives the Couriers address. Item not dated, but c1985. BTPS did inspect but did not have the room to store and its poor condition went against recovery. Subsequently acquired by the TMSV and since sold?Photocopy of an article on an A4 sheet from the Geelong Advertiser dated 23-2-1985, titled "The elements a threat to historic tram". Article by David Fitzsimons about the poor condition of the body of Geelong tram No. 40 in Queens Park Newtown. Gives a short history of the tram, including its time in Ballarat as No. 43. Quotes Dr. David Ellerton who reported on the situation, Mr Tom Wilson, City Engineer of Newtown. Has a photo of the tram in Queens Park.
