One is blank; the other has been sent to Mrs A Wyatt, C/O Mrs E Young, 'Grand View', Warburton from daughter Nellie from 'The Quantocks', Surrey Hills - postmarked 10 Dec 1906. There is also a reproduction of this image in a framed collage of Surrey Hills photos.This is the earliest known image of the Surrey Gardens. The layout was originally designed by William Guilfoyle, who also designed Melbourne’s Royal Botanic Gardens.Black and white photo taken from an early postcard. Taken from the roof of a house in Essex Road, it shows the development of housing between Essex and Union Roads and includes the section of land fenced off for the Surrey Gardens with paths roughly laid out, one existing tree but no tree planting. The houses depicted are largely Edwardian timber buildings with corrugated rooves. There are still some vacant blocks. Empire Day celebrations were held from 1908-1912. Prior to the opening of the railway in 1893 the only public transport to Surrey Hills was the Melbourne-Lilydale horse coach which travelled to Surrey Hills down Victoria Street and Mont Albert Road. The fare to Union Road was 9 pence. Photo 16-4a was the number given to the original print provided by the State Savings Bank. Ken Hall made a negative from it, and the reprint of this was given the number 1459. This number was chosen as the catalogue number to avoid confusion with SHP4a. Photo provided by Surrey Hills branch of State Savings Bank of Victoria in 1978 for launch of Surrey Hills Neighbourhood Centre and was one of the first photos in the collection. The donor, Jean Boucher was the daughter of Wally Ives and she was an early active member of the History Nook at the Surrey Hills Neighbourhood Centre and the Surrey Hills Historical Society. Date is approximate. In 1904 Fr George Robinson had a weatherboard school hall erected beside Our Holy Redeemer Church, which had opened in 1902. The hall was opened on 20 November 1904 by Archbishop Thomas Carr and the following January the Sisters of St Joseph took charge of the school. With the need and expansion of charitable works occurring outside religious life, charity boxes began to spread into hospitals, orphanages and asylums. The need for non-fixed boxes grew with the rise in charities and their activities outside a fixed building. Collection boxes could be large (and therefore hard to move) or could be held by individuals acting as collection agents, working at a specific location, moving between dwellings or at events. William Grant was an early European colonist in the Bacchus Marsh township. Before arriving in Bacchus Marsh he conducted a bakery business in Melbourne in the 1840s. He arrived in Bacchus Marsh around 1850 and became successful in business and was prominent in many community and local government organisations. He died in 1884. Gulline Brothers was a general store in Bacchus Marsh located in Grant Street, on the corner of Grant Street and Sydney Street. The store was originally opened by John Jory in about 1890. At that time it was advertised as being located on Maddingley Road. It was later taken over by Horace Hussey and William Grant Morton trading as Hussey and Morton, and later solely as Morton's. In the early 1920s it was sold to the Gulline Brothers and traded under this name for many years. The building has had multiple uses and occupants since the Gulline Brothers ran their business there.
