This photograph was one of ten photographs donated to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and Village by Fred Trewartha. Frederick John Fox Trewartha (Fred) was a well-known Warrnambool businessman. He was born in Beeac near Geelong in 1920 and came to Warrnambool with his family as a very young child. He was apprenticed to his father John, as a saddler and later opened his own shop on Raglan Parade. He then moved into working with tarpaulins and canvases for the trucking industry. Fred was keenly interested in photography (and was a member of the Warrnambool Cine Club), yachting and boat building. He kept his yacht moored at Port Fairy for many years and participated in sailing events locally and interstate. He also built boats with his sons. He had the opportunity to meet many older sailors and it's thought this photo (and others in the set) may have been given to him by one of these men. Fred Trewartha died in 2016 in Warrnambool. The Eumeralla (sometimes spelt Eumerella) was built in 1908 in Scotland by Messrs. Scott of Kinghorn on the Firth of Forth. It was a steel screw steamer and had been designed to meet the growing demand for a thoroughly up to date passenger and cargo steamer for the Melbourne to Portland service for John McIlwraith and Company in partnership with the Belfast, Koroit Steam Navigation Company and Howard Smith Company Ltd. This photograph appeared in the Leader (Melbourne) on Saturday 28th November 1908 with the headline "Launching the Eumeralla" and shows the ship being launched on October 10th, 1908, in Scotland. It was described as "Length, 190 feet; breadth, 30 feet; depth 15 feet". It went on to say it had a speed guaranteed at 11 knots and was expected in Melbourne by the following January. It could accommodate sixty saloon passengers and thirty in steerage and had electric light fitted throughout. While on the Melbourne to Portland service the Eumeralla had several mishaps. In 1909 it crashed into the breakwater at Portarlington, splintering the woodwork and leaving a gap of about 12 feet. On Saturday 9th August 1913, as it was leaving Warrnambool, it encountered heavy seas and a passenger (Frederick Mahoney) sustained fatal injuries after hitting his head on the bulwark - and the second mate was found dead after the water poured off the deck. Several other passengers were also injured. Between 1912 and 1913 it was used to carry passengers between Brisbane, Maryborough and Rockhampton before being sent back to Melbourne for an overhaul. In 1915 it was selected for the Winter service to run daily trips between Melbourne and Geelong. In 1925 it nearly sank in the Yarra (at Queens Wharf) when it developed a list and water entered the engine room. Firemen from the Eastern Hill Station, crew and wharf workers were able to stop it from sinking. Between 1928 and 1935 the Eumeralla was laid up in Hobson's Bay before being sold to a Chinese firm to be used on the short coastal run between Shanghai and Wen Chow. It was renamed "Mel Lee (Mow Lee) Number 2". It arrived on July 12th, 1935, at Tanghai (a small Chinese port to the south of Shanghai) with 400 local passengers. The population of the town turned out to welcome the new ship with a fireworks display which caused the passengers to rush across to the side of the ship nearest the scene. The steamer immediately listed to one side and sank.This photograph is significant because of its association with the coastal trader S.S. Eumeralla and its important contribution to trade along Victoria's West Coast in the early 20th century.Black and white photograph showing a crowd of people standing on a shore watching a steamer (the Eumeralla) being launched. An Australian food production company specialising in ham, bacon and smallgoods, had factories in Brisbane, Sydney and Freemantle before buying the factory of Roberts Osborne Co. in Golden Square in 1913. Over 5000 pounds was spent refurbishing the factory to bring it up to current health and safety requirements, including the installation of electricity. In addition the company established retail outlets at Bath Corner and Hargreaves Street. The company arranged for the Golden Square railway station to be used to offload stock rather than the Bendigo station. The company was well known for its "Rex" brand of goods. In Bendigo the company even sported its own cricket team. In the top photo there are only a couple who are identifiable, 3rd from the left is Jack Swatton, (refer Cat No 6719.2P), 4th from left is George Lansell, (refer Cat No 8012P), there is one other from the left being possibly Les Morey The same Les Morey is in the bottom photo 8th from the left. These images are a copy of of the originals which were joined together and laminated as one. They were not taken the same year. Just by appearance the top photo is a number of years earlier than the bottom. There is an original of the top photo still in its cardboard cylinder for postage. Framed photograph of the history of H.M.A.S Australia 1928 - 1954. H.M.A.S Australia was one of three County Class Heavy Cruisers that served with the R.A.N during World War 2.The other 2 being H.M.A.S Canberra and H.M.S Shropshire. Canberra was sunk on the 9th August 1942 at the battle of Savo. H.M.A.S Australia had a length of 192.13M - a beam of 20.8M - a draught of 6.5M. She had a top speed 0f 31 knots (57 km/h) or 36 mph. The British Government donated H.M.S Shropshire to replace Australia. Australia's Battle Honours include Atlantic 1940-41 Pacific 1941-43.Coral Sea 1942- Savo Island 1942- Guadalcanal 1942 - New Guinea 1942-44 - Leyte Gulf 1945 Lingayan Gulf 1945. H.M.A.S Australia was commissioned on 24/04/1928 and paid off on the 31/08/1954. She was broken up in Britain in1956.See description.

The description outlines the the Kokoda Campaign from July 1942 to November 1942. The track is 96 K’s or then it was 60 miles over the Owen Stanley Ranges in New Guinea. Australian casualties were 625 KIA, 1600 WIA and a huge 4,000 casualties due to illness. Over the years there has been many discussions as to whether it is a “trail” or a”track”. J A Eden (Clothier) was first listed in Pall Mall in 1895. The Surprise Shop was located on the third block Pall Mall Bendigo, next to the Lyceum Store. John A Eden (Draper) listed at the corner of Bath Lane and Mitchell Street from 1898. J A Eden retired from business in 1904. A sale of men's clothing, hosiery, hats, underwear and general clothing of every description was conducted by Mr J H Curnow on the premises in Eaglehawk. Wild Heerbrugg B8 Aviograph Stereoplotters were a very accurate piece of equipment for the extraction of topographical information from stereo air photography. This is an operating manual covering all aspects of the Wild B8 Stereoplotter. Chapters include, construction, descriptions of the optical train, electrical equipment, technical data, assembly (adjustment, instructions for use and maintenance). They were widely used throughout the Royal Australian Survey Corps from 1965 onwards.
