The company developed from the merchant activities of John Ford Strachan who commenced business in the Port Phillip settlement during 1836. A series of amalgamations from 1876 to 1896 extended the interests of the firm which registered on 23 Dec 1897 as Strachan, Murray & Shannon Pty Ltd. The company floated as a public company on 12 Sep 1919 and changed its name to Strachan & Co Ltd on 1 Jul 1931. The business was taken over by Dennys Lascelles Ltd and deregistered on 2 Aug 1978. The Stachan Woolstore complex on the corner of Moorabool Street and Brougham Street, Geelong was first built in 1840 and has been systematically redesigned over the years. Manufactured by the Bell Punch Company Ltd of London as the "Ultimate Fare System", for issuing bus and tram tickets. Used by the MMTB for street sellers at Safety Zones in Melbourne. See items 7504 for a roll of 10c MMTB tickets and 7889 for a circular regarding their introduction in 1951. The machine was received from the donor with five rolls of NSW bus tickets - 3 Section, 25c, 45c, 60c and $1.00. Demonstrates a ticket machine used at Melbourne tram stops by "Safety Zone sellers".Complex apparatus consisting of metal parts, grey frame, levers, numbering counters, fitted with a cloth strap with clips and brown plastic backing. Blue enamel water bottle, covered in a two tone felt cloth of dark navy and a lighter blue. Bottle has a narrow raised neck and has a cork stopper intact. Carrier is made of leather strip around 16mm wide, light tan in colour and is adjustable in length.
