A Luther Collage Year 10 History essay which documents a visit to several war memorials and researches the history of James Byrne, a name on the Mitcham War Memorial. He had enlisted in 1915 and had been discharged dur to epilepsy. He reinlisted in 1916 and was sent to England where he died in camp. The reason given wassuffocation due to the influence of drink. Cargo steamship (refrigerated) built by Hawthorn Leslie, Hebburn for Elderslie SS Company Ltd, Glasgow 1902. Twin screw, triple expansion engine making 13 knots, 1910 owned by the Scottish Shire Line Ltd, London and registered at Glasgow.Wooden framed sepia photograph of Servicemen aboard ship being farewelled by family and friends.The vessel pictured is the HMAT Ayrshire. She saw service during WW1 between1914 and 1918. Inscribed "Ayrshire" 3-7-16.

Margaret Ellen Holloway was born in 1864 at Indigo via Rutherglen. She married William Hugh Hooke in 1892. Their children were : Allan b 1893, Ida Mary b 1895, Normal b 1896 KIA 1916 WW1, Maxwell b 1902 and Violet b 1904. The orchard that Margaret is photographed in is the family orchard and farm belonging to relatives being the Mills and Holloway families. The orchard was south of Barnawartha. According to his military records, William Collier did not make it to France. After enlisting on 3/04/1915 he went to England. It was there that he was diagnosed with "Miner's Complaint" and discharged as medically unfit, returning to Australia on 17/07/1917 on the Aryshire.Black and white post card photograph of three men in World War 1 military uniform, standing in snow. John Richards Harris was born in 1868 of Cornish miner parents in Chiltern. He attended Rutherglen State School No. 522 (Rutherglen Common School), probably starting there in it's 1st or 2nd year of opening. He practiced medicine in Rutherglen, and was the doctor who examined many of the local men for enlistment in World War 1. In 1917, he enlisted himself, and served as Medical Officer in the Australian Flying Corps in Egypt. In 1920 he was elected to the Legislative Council of Victoria, where he served for much of the period from then until 1946. He received his knighthood in 1937. After retiring from politics, he returned to Rutherglen as a medical practitioner and vigneron. As a vigneron he made the sweet fortified wines that were common in the district, but in the 1920s he experimented with a dry sherry style, made in the Spanish manner. His 'Doctor John' sherry won many show awards.
