The Bendigo business R.J. Conroy was a bicycle agency in the 1940s. Elliott Bros of Bendigo Pty Ltd was started in 1980 by three brothers Hayden, Daryl and Noel Elliott. They purchased the motorcycle dealership known as RJ Conroy from Dick Conroy. The former City of Kew in Victoria issued badges to council employees performing public roles. The Society has other badges issued by the City for roles such as Parking Attendant, Swimming Pool Attendant etc. Arthur Henry Dear was an employee of the City of Kew, acting as Hall Keeper of the Kew Recreation Hall in Wellington Street, and later the new Kew City Hall in Cotham Road. The Arthur Dear Collection contains memorabilia - tickets, programmes, invitations - as well as his identification badge. Items in the collection dates from the 1940s to the 1960s. The Kew Recreation Hall (Wellington Street) and later the Kew City Hall (Cotham Road) were major locations in suburban Melbourne in the postwar period for civic and private events including theatre productions and exhibitions. The Arthur Dear Collection (in conjunction with the scrapbooks compiled by Marion Tilley) provide a comprehensive snapshot of performing arts in Kew during the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. He worked for CN Myers, a company involved with paper converting. CN Myers was a family business (on Charles Bacon's maternal line). She worked at a bank in Lydiard Street, opposite the Art Gallery of Ballarat, and lived in rooms above the Lydiard Street Shops. Marion enrolled in some evening classes at the Ballarat Technical Art School (a predecessor institution of Federation University Australia) conducted by Neville Bunning. He was nor overly happy with her small colourful jugs and vases, wanting her to handbuild pots, rather than wheel throw them. Marion Popplewell continued making her small wheel thrown pots with fine handles, and made glazes herself from materials imported from England. Attending classes in Ceramics up until the mid 1970s, she also took some classes in Woodwork and Needlework. Her 'Pink Glazed Jug' 1945 won a prize at the Royal Melbourne Show in the late 1940s. She died in Melbourne on 26 September 1998. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. The Art Collection features over 2000 works and was listed as a 'Ballarat Treasure' in 2007.Wheel thrown vessel with three slight bulges and turned foot. Deep blue glaze with rim banded in a second glaze, causing a eutectic reaction, causing the spontaneous syrupy runs down the outside of the vessel. Vessel has many small divots, suggesting the clay may have been reclaimed, or collected from nature, and not thoroughly prepared before throwing. Vessel has one small chip (13mm x 5mm) on inside of rim, but is not a threat to its overall integrity. This case belonged to Leonard Thomas (VX21070) who was born on 23 Aug 1900 in Cardiff England. By the Second World War, Thomas had emigrated to Australia and was residing in Elwood when he enlisted in Caulfield in 1940. Thomas served during the war as a Private and was discharged on 31 May 1949 from the AIF Mov and Control Group. His full service records are not currently available via the National Archives Australia and so it is unclear whether this case was part of the equipment of his role or a personal item.This case contains a number of inscriptions which may aid researchers to understand the life and movements of the owner, Leonard Thomas. The apparent crest is of special interest, suggesting that Leonard Thomas was connected to equine activities though the unavailability of his service records mean this fact is not confirmed. The item has interpretive potential, to discuss matters of equipment, emigration, use of horses during war and possibly leisure activities if the crest is taken as a reference to polo.Horse shoe shaped case in brown leather constructed of a lid and base. Used for storing shirt collars. Lid and base respectively constructed of two pieces of leather (one top and one edge) which are stitched to heavy card interior lining, mustard yellow in colour. The lid and base are held together by a sewn on leather strip and fastened at the top with a metal buckle; the holed strap through which the buckle attaches has broken. This strap in turn passes vertically down the back of the case and underneath (forming the strip which joins the two halves). Exterior base carries handwritten inscriptions, as does the interior lid. Black ink stamps throughout.Stamps read "L THOMAS" along an upturned horse shoe, underneath which are possibly clubs and an up-facing arrow. Service number written on side of case reads "VX21070". Handwritten inscription reads "Leonard Thomas/33 [illegible three words]/Cardiff/April 20th 1921." This is an advertising leaflet issued by the Warrnambool Woollen Mill Co. This mill was established in South Warrnambool in 1910 with John Bennett the first Manager. The mill’s production increased during both World Wars with government contracts and wartime demands. In the 1940s the mill employed over 700 people. In 1968 the mill was sold to the multinational company Dunlop which in turn sold the business in 1982 to Onkaparinga Woollen Mill. In 1983 Onkaparinga was taken over by Macquarie Worsteds and in 1994 this group pulled out of Warrnambool. The Warrnambool Woollen Mill closed in 2000 after 90 years of operation. This leaflet is of interest as an example of the advertising mechanisms produced by the Warrnambool Woollen Mill when it was a locally run large-scale business in the city. The business was a dominant one in Warrnambool for many decades, employing many local people. The factory itself was a well-known landmark in the city. This is a sheet of buff-coloured thick paper folded in two places to make a six-page leaflet. The front page has an aerial black and white photograph of the Warrnambool Woollen Mill, two of the inside pages have 12 black and white photographs showing the processes in making woollen blankets and two other pages have advertisements for Warrnambool blankets and dress suiting material. Inside the folder is a sample piece of pink blanket with a card in red and cream colouring showing the factory’s guarantee. The sample has been glued to the paper. This medium sized metal, horse-drawn, road-working scoop, with timber shafts is an example of those used in Moorabbin Shire in the late 1800s, and up until the 1940s for road-works, building dams, market-gardening work and other similar earthworks in the shire. The Box Cottage museum example would have been drawn by one horse, with the worker walking and steering the horse and scoop from behind using the timber shafts. There were even bigger metal scoops that required two or more horses to drag the scoop through the soil.Following the Dendy Special Survey 1841 allotments were sold to pioneer settlers who established market gardens in the Moorabbin area.
